He has been putting out a lot of weak material since Traffic. I really didn't like Bubble, Good German, Full Frontal, or the last two Ocean's movies. I have no desire to see this new flick.

He really hit his stride with Out of Sight, The Limey, Brokovich, and Traffic all back to back. I like Sex, Lies, and Videotape a lot but otherwise I'm not into his earlier movies.

Typing this made me realize he's got more movies I don't like than ones I do.

But I did like Bubble, Che part one and Full Frontel. Hated all the Ocean Elevan films, Che Part two and never saw The Good German. I think he's one of the most interesting directors, b/c even when he fails it's not b/c he was lazy or out of ideas it just he wasn't able to craft his ideas as well or his experiment didn't work out.

I just felt it was too long for the pace it went at. I liked the conciseness of Soderbergh's version. I haven't read the book, but I assume the first version is probably closer to the novel.

The book was half cranial, half emotional (nostalgic, longing, glum).

Tarkovsky's film focused on the cranial part (IMO) and seemed to pay only small attention to the emotional impact.

Soderbergh's movie was pretty much the opposite.

Which could have worked, except I still never felt anything for any of the characters, ever.

Plus the new ending made me kind of think that Soderbergh didn't actually read the book. Or watch all of the original film.

You might have hated Che but it wasn't a flop critically as bad as you said. In fact a lot of the top critics loved the film. Roger Ebert gave it 3.5/4 and on his top 10 for the year, New York Times, Entertainment Weekly and a bunch of others all liked it. I personally loved part one and hated part two but regardless it's far from the biggest flop in a long time.

The film was developed by Benicio del Toro and producer Laura Bickford. In fact Soderbergh wasn't even suppose to direct it, Terrance Malick was and dropped out when financing fell through.

solaris was like 7 years ago.

che still holds 63 percent on rotten tomatoes. which is a pretty good average to me.

girlfriend experience i haven't seen yet but i'm hearing mixed reviews.

bubble was good.
not sure what you're looking at.

but steven soderbergh makes movies that can push his creative limits. some of his stuff is purely for the audience (oceans) but there's some stuff where he's just experimenting (bubble)

either way.
i don't know why you're in this post.

how can u bash Soderbergh when ur boy has been producing n
even crappier material over the course of his last few films? and im not talkin about how much money they made. Steven's an interesting director. he fucks up every now n then but he makes interesting choices & generally goes his own way. u could say exactly the same about M. Night, right? i can't really understand bashing one and defending the other.

one of the greats of "hard" sci-fi filmmaking along with Blade Runner ... and ... I'm actually struggling to think of anything else on that level, although I'm sure there are some.

Frankly, it's better than the original, because it distills what was good about that one into a much more palatable ~2h film, as opposed to the sprawling conceptual piece the original was (still a good film).

People are crazy crazy if they're seriously hating on this one.

because it's a horror/psychological thriller disguised as a sci-fi flick. it was in the same vein as Sunshine and Event Horizon etc.

maybe it's just the sci-fi geek in me but when i watch a "space" movie about some interesting phenomenon in "space" i want the movie to be about that. not a bunch of wack flashbacks and people interacting with imaginary friends.

that's just my take. but for what it was, it was well done.

i think he's just run out of topics to touch on. I haven't seen TGE, and I doubt I do anytime soon, but just like people in conversations or in relationships, art creators run out of interesting things to say or interesting ways to say common place things.

i think he might do well to do some more Big Budget stuff, kinda like the Oceans movies, but maybe something less stylish so that he can stay in the game but not feel the pressure to be 'Soderberg' with every picture that he makes.

I am a fan of his, although I didn't see Che. In general we make so quick to write people off as credible artists or focus so much on people's great works that we miss an opportunity to examine someone's career and see just how anomologous that people like Steven Speilberg in the sense that he has had a long running successful career that doesn't leave much for detractors to pick over.

haven't seen Che, but the mere fact that I even considered sitting through five hours of it with only one intermission when it screened in my town is a testament to how much I believe in this dude's filmmaking.

He has mastered the Damon/Affleck joke from Jay + Silent Bob about one for the money, one for the art, one for the money, etc.

I mean, we all realize Bubble is largely an experiment in using real life actors and filming in HD, right? He's making films on another level. If he wanted to just make popcorn flicks and put people in seats, he could do that, but that's not his goal.

Anyone else seen Schizopolis? One of my favorites ever, I'd be surprised if anyone else in this post got down with that one.

That, along with Full Frontal, was my least favorite of his films.

Yeah they were trying too hard to give it that old school feel. Tobey wasn't convincing. Clooney seemed out of place. And even Cate Blanchett's performance was forced. I barely made it through to the ending. It had it's moments here & there but overall it was utterly forgettable

discussion in terms of quality I'll skip it.

Deniro is not a director. It worked for Bronx Tale because he had just done two straight movies with Scorsese and could jack his whole style from Goodfellas, mix it in with shades of his own Little Italy upbringing along with his love for black women and make an entertaining flick.

Good Shepherd was three hours long and felt like at least four. I can't believe I made it through that movie.

The last twenty minutes, where the "plot" turned to cliched hookers-have-feelings-too machinations, made the project irredeemable instead of what is was before then, which was a well-made student film character study. Which is still unacceptable output from a man like Soderbergh.

LOL -

a) I don't "hate" Soderbergh. I enjoyed both 'Traffic'
and 'Erin Brokovich'

b) Like many young progressives, I was interested to see
a Che Guevara biopic

c) Seriously - I don't have a problem with most male

Honestly not sure why you're so mad about this one.

The movies sucked.

They weren't good.

They were supposed to be awesome biopics, and they
weren't interesting and were critical flops. Not even
artsy fartsies, who love Che Guevara and would pretty
much cosign anything about dude, didn't give it all that
much praise.

>Soderbergh, Carano in "Knockout" pairing

By: Mike Fleming
Published: Sun, September 06, 2009, 12:09 PM

Gina Director Steven Soderbergh has committed to next direct “Knockout,” a spy thriller that will mark the screen starring debut of Gina Carano, the mixed martial arts circuit fighter.

Relativity Media will fully finance, and Soderbergh plans a late January production start. Domestic distribution is expected to be locked quickly.

Soderbergh locked in the film just as his Warner Bros. comedy, “The Informant!,” made its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival. The Matt Damon-starrer opens stateside on September 18.

Scripted by Lem Dobbs, “Knockout” casts Carano as a girl from the wrong side of the tracks who is given a second chance to use her skills for constructive purposes. The film is a closer cousin to “La Femme Nikita” and “Kill Bill” than “Million Dollar Baby,” in that it doesn’t take place in the fight ring. Rather, Soderbergh considers the film as a flat out action film in the James Bond mold, and will shoot in locations around the world that include Ireland, Turkey and the U.S.

Soderbergh will surround Carano will name actors in supporting roles.

The MMA circuit is where Soderbergh discovered Carano, a lightweight division slugger with movie star good looks. The Muay Thai-trained fighter has compiled a 7-1 record. Though Carano suffered her first loss in a title fight last month, she is considered the face of the fledgling women’s mixed martial arts fighting circuit.

Dobbs previously scripted “Kafka” and “The Limey” for Soderbergh.

The film will be produced by Gregory Jacobs, Soderbergh’s longtime collaborator. Relativity topper Ryan Kavanaugh will also be a producer, and Tucker Tooley is executive producer.

In his deal, Soderbergh waived his upfront salary and will share any ownership stake with Relativity Media.

“We couldn’t be more thrilled to be working with Steven Soderbergh on this project, which is clearly right in his sweet spot,” said Relativity’s Kavanaugh.

“This deal creates a true partnership between us and Steven, where together we will make a mainstream action film with universal appeal for a reasonable budget, and with the incentives for the studio and filmmaker totally aligned," said Tooley.

Soderbergh Soderbergh, who earlier this summer exited a plan to direct “Moneyball” for Columbia Pictures, most recently directed “The Girlfriend Experience,” a pic that starred Sasha Grey in her first performance in a legit film.

Carano so far has appeared as herself in the docu “Ring Girls” and the Oxygen reality series “Fight Girls.” She also served a stint as Crush on NBC’s “American Gladiators,” and had a role in the upcoming Michael Jai White action film “Blood and Bone.”
