Considering the above context, I thought he was pretty good. Though it's now difficult to watch him act without always imagining him as the same character.

...like, even preposterous for a flick like this.
But then, something funny happened. I somehow stopped noticing all the things wrong and got sucked in. I even... laughed. (Thomas Lennon is hilarious in this film, as is Melora Hardin a.k.a. Jan Levenson-Gould from The Office.)
So yeah. Could be worse. Clearly they made the movie up as they went, knowing they had to include a pre-req amounts of Zac Efron dancing and/or playing basketball. But hey, I guess sometimes that's enough for making a hit movie. *shrug*

The dance scene with Efron had me cracking up bc cotdamn that was forced....but after the initial set-up, I found it pretty damn good for what it was....a fun, relatively deep love story, with the obligatory teen stuff thrown in(cars, clothes, parties, etc).

He handled it well but it was a lousy flick. The hardest thing in Hollywood for a young star is to do good work AND raise your quote so you can make more money. The agent is always going to try to get you into blockbusters and those are usually films that don't require THAT much talent. He needs to do a couple of big flicks and then an indie, like Orson Welles. But hopefully, he can pick an indie that people actually see.

I didn't even know it was him when I saw it, I knew the name but hadn't ever seen anything else he's been in so I didn't recognize him. so I just watched it completely unbiased and afterwards when I found out it was him was like "*that's* Zac Efron?" Kid can act.
That was a pretty good movie too, Ben Chaplin and dude who played Orson were terrific. And Efron held his own with them.
