"Torture/Gore Porn Fans: Your Citizen Kane is here, the movie Martyrs"
Sat Mar-21-09 06:56 PM by BigReg

Yeah, this movie was pretty high on the fucked up scale. At least with Miike's fucked up shit it's so out there that it's almost a comedy.

Acting was pretty good. script...ehh...it has the burden of being a french film and a horror movie so any chance of logic is out the door. But as far as pure depravity goes, it's vile and pretty much hates women. I was hoping to find some kind of deeper meaning which it looks like they were trying to hint at...but it's all bullshit... which is unfortunate because it's pretty high quality affair as far as horror goes.

Anyway, you like meanspirited anti-humanity movies, this is right up your corner. Now I am going to cleanse my mind with good old PG rated violence with an episode of 24.

I'll check back in after I watch it.

Have you seen Inside by any chance? It's another really good french horror movie that I'd highly recommend to whoever enjoys these kind of movies...really well done and some amazing gore scenes.

Horray for depravity! haha

the central premise of why they want martyrs is just too sick. I mean who comes up with ideas like that and then goes and makes a film out of it

Yeah, I tried puttin' you all on this flick last year.

I think I also posted about it on my top 5 of 2008 list.

Anyway, a very solid French horror flick...its like a thinking man's Hostel flick and very well made.

Surprisingly, it is not that gruesome or gory compared to other recent French horror films (ala Inside, etc.)...it is more shocking for the stories' plot and treatment of women and children. The 1st half of the film is surprisingly creepy horror stuff with a great build up, then comes the 2nd half of the film, which is almost like a completely different film, which is like the "torture porn" type of film...the 2nd half really tests your patience, but maybe it is necessary to the ending reveal.

I advice you all to go in fresh and not know anything about it...it will be more rewarding.

IMO...great flick, but I can't imagine watching this repeatedly like the more crowd-pleasing "Inside". It is still one of the best horror films to drop recently and is one of the best out of the new French Horror wave of films being put out.

It has a very similar feel to the original Hellraiser flick as well...which is funny, because the director of "Martyrs" is working on directing the remake or reimagining of a new Hellraiser film. He was personally picked out by Clive Barker as a result of this film.

I would rank...

1. Inside
2. Martyrs
3. Haute Tension
4. Frontieres
5. Everything else...

Just finished watching it.... was an extremely impressive flick imo. Very well done.

Like you said, I don't think I could put this through repeat viewings... it's really tough to watch. The last 30 minutes are very uncomfortable and the ending is a complete mind fuck. Pretty deep stuff for this kind of product.

The creepy/horror aspects of it were pretty damn effective too. Had kind of that Asian ghost style you see so much of these days but way more intense. Genuinely scary stuff.

Overall, I liked this a little more than Inside because of it's impact. Inside was really good too, I liked it...but it was way more shallow that Martyrs. Nothing beats the last part of Inside for the gore/"what the fuck" factor though.

If this director is handling the new Hellraiser...jebus, I can't even imagine what the possibilities could be. Looking forward to that.

I don't really watch many films to begin with, especially horror/gore flicks. Certain parts were pretty hard for me to watch, and the movie, overall, is a trip. I'm curious in others' interpretation of the ending. I read the thread at imdb, and there are some interesting theories.

----------------START SPOILERS-----------------------------

Alright, so your torturing people in hope they get hit with the divine light and you can use them as a medium to talk to the other side.

Im like, at that point in time, one of two things are going to happen

1)If there is a divine force, what you've done is SO horrible whatever info they give you will certainly fuck you up as far as karma is concerned, thus her blowing her head off.

2)At that moment in time, she might transend to the other side and not care. With all those other Martyrs they talked about its not as if they were having chats, they were in a state of extacy.

But what really got me was I couldn't resolve the characters motivation. Like lets take 'Flatliners', that old keifer sutherland movie where those med students would 'kill' themselves temporarily to try to get to the other side. They approached it from a scientific angle, so if those kids did fucked up stuff to others (they didn't) I would have believed them, just a case of mad scientist gone wrong.

The whole Martyr thing requires at least a belief in faith, yet that whole organization commited heinous crimes to achieve it. Now, im not going to say a religious organization can't commit evil acts (hello, Christianity of the middle ages and early 'convert em by the sword or book' Islam), but it just seemed excessive. This may be because we had a front row view of all the torturing, but the whole premise 'We will do these evil things because we want to talk to God' felt unbelievable, because if they talked to a 'God' I think he would be hella pissed you've been torturing people just to get a direct chatline. I saw someone say that it was an indictment of the hypocracy of alot of religious nuts, in that case it was dead on. But as a moviegoer, it lost me.

SPOILERS>>>>

Yeah, it seems crazy that these people could do these things to other people just for some sort of empirical evidence of the afterlife, especially since it would require some sort of belief in a higher power.

there's some interesting theories about the girl telling the woman something that would lead her to kill herself and ending these experiments, thus ending future torturings/experiments and making herself a true martyr.

and that last line where she tells Etienne to "keep doubting," well, that just confuses me even more.

I took it to be esoteric and mystical, not falling within the bounds of any strict religious doctrine. They wanted to know what happens when you die, not necessarily any sort of higher being is necessary...and my interpretation of "Keep doubting" is that the revelation, whatever it may be, leads to such an emptiness of being that it is unbearable. Perhaps that means that the chick lied to her, but I don't think she had the faculties to pull that off at that stage.

as an indictment of religion in general...basically how hypocritical they were to do what they did all in a chance to connect with the big guy/girl in the sky.

Maybe they caught me in a less cynical phase, or maybe the movie softened me up, but I couldn't wrap my mind about how methodical they were about everything else but dropped the ball on the big ethical issue.

But I guess that was the point, lol.

and I can only think of a few people I would ever recommened it to. I don't usually get uncomfortable during movies, audition and hard candy being the only two that really come to mind but this definitely doesn't make you sit still and watch it all unfold.

Terrific movie. The beginning is straight creepy and scary, the second have is just brutal. The whole message is rather tweaked and I'll have to think on this later but a terrific movie.

the best way i can describe it-- a real-time paced, believable, slightly religious, saw & hostel mash-up.

the gore effects were top notch.

the 2 leads are so gorgeous, i was googling them to clear my mind after the movie, lol

i would rate this 21+, no way anyone younger could grasp it.

Wouldn't she have been dead like IMMEDIATELY if she were skinned??

Of all the ridiculousness of the film, I found THAT to be just too much.
I mean sure it's a movie & we should suspend reality but it seems (since it's French & all) that it tries to appeal to our intellectual side & then completely insults our intelligence. Then again, maybe that was the point.
