but the second half was pretty average. Not only did it not have much tension but really didn't have that many great war scenes. Platoon seemed like it was from somebody who actually been in Vietnam.

Oliver Stone.

He's a Vietnam Veteran. He made a trilogy about the Vietnam War:

"Platoon", "Heaven and Earth" and "Born on the Fourth of July"

and that's why I love Platoon. i feel like I'm watching something made by somebody trying to tell their experiences. when I watch Full Metal Jacket or Causalities of War, although good films they lack the incite and sincerity that oliver stone was able to get across. Apocalypse Now is in a different category just b/c it's more metaphorical and unless u count the redux it really doesn't get that into commentary of the war it's depicting it's more war in general.

Well, I think that both of them are excellent movies.. I guess I just had a problem with Charlie Sheen's psychological progression and his depiction of the character, it felt inconsistent, it seemed like he slipped into the madness a bit too quickly than i would have imagined but maybe that's how war is...

the most memorable part is they stop at a French plantation and the plantation owner talks about how the Vietnamese fought against the French in the 50's & it kinda draws parallels to the war with America.
don't remember much about the other differences, but that one stood out.

French scenes are interesting but seem to interrupt the movie some (for me). didn't care for the Playboy helicopter scene that was added.

best additions were Kilgore's radio calls for his board and Brando with the Time magazines.

There are so many fantastic quotable's... the sheer lunacy of some of the characters... I mean, I can't remember the last time I saw a movie with as much depth and artistic merit... a crazy man's journey to kill another crazy man... just brilliant..

The opening sequence is still amazing each time I see it. And I'm ashamed that I didn't think of Duvall's Kilgore for this post:

not saying it's a bad movie ( I own it and watch it a lot), But there's a LOT of sensationalism in the movie that didn't take place in the book...(thank you, Jerry Bruckheimer...)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Stebbins

John Stebbins (born 1965) was an American soldier who fought in the Battle of Mogadishu. Though serving as a clerk for the Army Rangers during the Somalia conflict, he joined the fighting and was awarded the Silver Star for his actions. He was mentioned in the book Black Hawk Down: A Story of Modern War.

In 2000, he was convicted by court-martial of the molestation and rape of his six-year-old daughter and was imprisoned in Fort Leavenworth for 30 years.

He did not feature in the subsequent film version of the book, instead being replaced with a character named John Grimes played by Ewan MacGregor.

Stebbins is currently serving time at the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) in Elkton, Ohio, a low security facility housing male offenders. It has an adjacent satellite that houses low and minimum security male offenders.

I haven't seen a lot of the old classics.

1. A Thin Red Line
2. The Dirty Dozen
3. Saving Private Ryan
4. Das Boot
5. Glory
6. Apocalypse Now
7. Platoon
8. Three Kings
9. Full Metal Jacket
10. MASH

And honorable mention to Force 10 From Navarone, which a lot of people don't like but I love. One of my favorite endings of all time.

i need to revisit that one soon

Thin Red Line bores the piss out of me. I understand what it was trying to do. It was just done way too much.

and agreed on BoB.

is the only Malick that I come close to loving.

The combat sequence was dope. In the most recent Film Quarterly issue (2 or 3 articles on The Wire, 1 on Generation Kill, interview) David Simon was asked if there were any war films he thought were exceptional and he noted TRL because of its depiction of hierarchy or something like that. I know he liked TRL in some fashion. LOL.

That's such a great film, I wish Ice Cube would stick to these type of films and not whatever disney films he has coming up.
