They just didn't care. It was like listening to some random sketch show. They had Lou Rawls there for NO reason! "...I don't even know why I'm here." - Lou. Hilarious.

why is the commentary so fucking dull?

not even dull in an ironic way as a joke (which would be lame neways)

just subdued and boring

In response to Reply # 1

Smith, Affleck, Lee, Mewes, and Mosier. At some points in the commentary (indicated by a little button that shows up at the parts in the movie when the feature is available), you can overlay video of the commentary session along with its audio over the bottom half of the movie.

It's great, these guys are awesome together which makes sense considering the number of movies they've done together.

I think Jason Mewes passes out on the floor. That shit was hilarious, the first time I saw/heard it. It might be a different Kevin Smith film

b/c they talk about everything from the feuds on set to references to the bullshit he went their on PTA first film. You know it's good when the director isn't allowed to do any more commentaries on his films anymore b/c of it.

Just really informative. I don't remember any specifics.

Casino

It seemed like they just interviewed the cast and other people who worked on it and then put the bits in relevant places. I thought that worked great.

Anchorman

maybe as funny as the movie it self.

In response to Reply # 1

Doug McHenry's on "Kingdom Come" (don't laugh: the film may have been silly and implausible, but the commentary was mostly steeped in technicals and therefore interesting to me)

Most commentaries for Disney and Pixar animated films are always good, particularly the ones for "Snow White" and "Fantasia", where they take old recordings of Walt Disney's voice and use those as the commentary (with extra notes by animation historian John Canemaker) . As is Don Bluth's self-deprecating commentary on "Anastasia".

In truth, I find most audio commentaries interesting. The worst I ever heard is Spike's director's commentary for "School Daze", which was forgivable because of the excellent and hilarious cast commentary on the latest edition.

In response to Reply # 2

I need to hear about dirt and mud being slung, people finding themselves under the bus, etc.

I also appreciate immersible depth into the minutiae of the filmmaking.

The best DVDs on both counts for me have been the "Superman" ultimate box set (with four discs dedicated to Part I, three to Part II) and the "Aladdin" Platinum Edition. The "Emperor's New Groove" DVD has a lot of pencil tests, unsused character concepts, and a lot of the details of the production, but next-to-nothing on "Kingdom of the Sun", the original version of the film (read the wiki: it's a long, messy story).

The "Dreamgirls" DVD is pretty in depth, but there's too much fluff and gloss to the behind-the-scenes material. And for a movie with such poor dancing, far too much of the behind-the-scenes is devoted to dance rehearsal footage with Fatima and her talented co-choreographers (too bad that dance talent didn't extend to Eddie Murphy, J-Hud and them on screen)

the more in depth they are the better.

not just commentary but behind the scenes featurettes documented the entire process of making the film, and any other bit about the movie.

the criterion collections of movies do a great job of this, for example, The Life Aquatic.

i have an 'infinifilm' or two which r like way cheaper attempts at the same concept

I hate when I get a DVD and there are no special features, like Vicki Christina Barcelona. You would think a Woody Allen film would be tricked out, but it didn't have anything.

That's usually when they just yank the joint they made for the theatrical release press kit and slide it onto the DVD.

I used to wonder if it had anything to do with music licensing, kind of like how Massive Attack's Teardrop isn't the theme music for House MD in New Zealand.
