I've always preferred political comedy to 'Hood' Comedy ( aLa "Def Comedy Jam" and "Comic View"), so I like Chris Rock's ability to weave current events and politics into his routines. ( see also: the late George Carlin).

It's nothing against Katt Williams, who's a funny guy, but it's comparing a very good comic to one of the five or ten best comics of all time.

I think Chris Rock is insightful inways that people of all races, colors and creeds can understand and find hilarious.
Katt is funny as shit, but he's also a little bit more black oriented.

physical comedy takes a great deal of talent as well, of course, but i tend to value the comedians that have the underlying fundamentals of well-written jokes "more seriously" than the cats who rely more on physicality (similarly, i value guys who can be funny clean more than guys who lean on profanity heavily, because best believe the best at it can do it either way...not saying katt can't, but i think his effectiveness would be dulled)

Katt's more of a gimmick and his vocie can get annoying at times. He's funny but not on Chris Rock's level. If Katt Williams had a show, it wouldn't last 2 seasons.

as far as preparing the public for realness, but Katt gets a little deeper than Chris, even when you compare their latest specials ("It's Pimpin' Pimpin'" & "Kill The Messenger").
The way they hyped KTM, I thought Chris was going unfiltered like Louis C.K. and some of the other comics like him (Patrice Oneal, Doug Stanhope, whoever else )

Chris Rock gets a LOT deeper with his jokes in my opinion. As was said he touches on more diverse topics, and I think his standup routines flow a lot better from joke to joke. It sounds natural. Katt's great, but he's got a more limited range (I don't even mean he just talks about the pimp angle...he's just not as versatile as Chris Rock). That, and as was said, he relies more on expression and physicality than Chris Rock does...Chris Rock is sort of a funny-looking nigga anyway, so he doesn't have to use that as much.
And Chris Rock's movie appearances > Katt Williams'. Easily. Katt's got time on his side though, so I think he'll make the gap closer
Katt is funny like a 'humorous-nigga-around-the-way' funny, but Chris Rock is 'professional comedian' funny.
Anybody can make funny OBSERVATIONS about around the way shit *punctuated with a bunch of pratfalls*, ala Katt, but Chris Rock tells JOKES.
With Chris you get observational humor, plus JOKES (a set-up, a story, a twist, a punchline), plus politics, plus social commentary.
Katt spends 1/3 of his set talking about ghetto unicorns *the mythical haters* and seeing how many times he can put the word motherfucker into his sentences and still be semi-coherent.

i personally think the art of actually writing jokes and doing thematic bits is difficult as hell. and chris does an hour plus. i enjoy katt immensely, but in some ways he is "getting over" by stretching what are essentially one-liners into two minute bits by adding tuck and rolls and wild facial expressions.
he's hilarious.
i just can't rank him above a guy who i feel *works harder* and writes better. and, in top form, is just as funny.
