"Smith... Spielberg... Oldboy... (maybe) (swipe)"

Variety:

>Spielberg, Smith in talks for 'Oldboy'

Pair may kidnap remake of Korean drama
By MICHAEL FLEMING

Steven Spielberg and Will Smith are in early discussions to collaborate on a remake of Chan Wook-park's "Oldboy." DreamWorks is in the process of securing the remake rights, and the new pic will be distributed by Universal.

In the 2003 Korean original, a man gets kidnapped and held in a shabby cell for 15 years without explanation. Suddenly, he's released and given money, a cell phone and clothes and is set on a path to discover who destroyed his life so he can take revenge.

Spielberg had been looking for an opportunity to make a film with Smith, who would play the kidnapped man if all the pieces fall into place. Spielberg is looking for a writer to begin the development process.

The film was originally set at U and then found its way to Mandate.

do incest

So, they gonna drastically change the story.

MOD NOTE: Sorry, I had to edit that subject line. As was evident in the last Oldboy discussion, there is a contingent of OKPs who have seen the movie and do not like this plot point being spoiled for others

How you gonna take out the incest twist?

That turned the story from a nice action thriller to seriously fucked up and psychological.

Take that out, and it's kind of just another revenge movie.

Yeah, I thought the hypnosis was a real stretch, but if they took it out they'd just be raping the impact of the original film...just like Hollywood always does, I guess.

I for one would LOVE if they kept it, only maybe finding a way around the hypnosis. And also they should get someone like Raven Simone or...I don't know, Rudy from the Cosby show, as the daughter...

It's about revenge, if they do it right, I think they can edit that detail and still keep the essence of the story.

I think..

There are quite a few directors and actors that would be a better fit for an Oldboy remake than Spielberg and Will Smith. I like both of them, but not for Oldboy.

I'd like to see someone like David Fincher direct an Oldboy remake. I don't know who would act in it though....perhaps Clive Owen.

Since that kid cited Old Boy as "inspiration". Not sure if that's the main reason it fell apart but that was one of the excuses given.

I don't like this at all. They are going to have to change too many things IMO. I also don't like Spielberg's involvement. He is the wrong guy for this.

You got, at the very least, Will Smith. You know, one of the world's biggest box office draws? A dude that has ZERO problem playing an unlikeable character? A cat that can tell you that his next joint will be just him reading a phone book as he stands on one foot eating a hamhock sandwich, yet will GUARANTEED have all of us there for it on opening day? Yeah, you would, stop frontin'.

Cmon.

And I know it's (still) fashionable to hate on Steve Spielberg, but fuck that, even as one of the biggest and best commercial filmmakers going today, he can still step back and make hard-to-swallow material (like Munich, like Schindler's, like A.I.)...

Cmon.

Until the day the studio announces that Harmony Korine will be adapting the script, I'm on board, and y'all should be too, if it goes down.

Cmon.

(caveat: I have yet to see the original film. *ducks tomatoes and lettuce*)

I actually wouldn't mind Will Smith in it but Spielberg just isn't in the right mindset to make it IMO. This would be completely different from ANYTHING he's done.

First, go see the original film.

Some things just aren't going to translate well into a different culture/language.

The movie isn't a Will Smith / Steven Spielberg type of movie. Old Boy was the middle of Park Chan-Wook's revenge trilogy. You really see Spielberg taking a Korean revenge film and making it his own? This isn't like Scorsese doing his take on Internal Affairs.

Do I think Will Smith would do a good job? Yeah, the man can act. I think for him to do his best work, they'd definitely need a different director though.

But really go and see the original then come back to marinate on this.

As in, what? A good movie destined to make a lot of fucking
money?

Jesus christ. STFU.

> Old Boy was the middle of Park Chan-Wook's revenge trilogy.

Okay, so now its going to be a big budget revenge movie
with an excellent, charismatic star and the guy who
directed Saving Private Ryan.

>You really see Spielberg taking a Korean revenge film and
>making it his own? This isn't like Scorsese doing his take on

People thought Spielberg couldn't do war movies, and then we
basically went on to be the best war movie fillmaker EVER(if you
combine Saving Private Ryan with those Band of Brothers jawns)

>Do I think Will Smith would do a good job? Yeah, the man can

No, you're wrong. Shush.

Have seen it, and its going to be better with these two.

Spielberg kills it with monster movies and Will has already done his fair share of monster/comedy/action flicks.

Let's go pitch this idea to someone.

71. "Spike Lee in the mix (SWIPE)"

http://www.slashfilm.com/wtf-spike-lee-direct-oldboy-remake/

I can’t decide if this is the best news we could possibly have with respect to a new version of Oldboy, or merely the most unexpected. It is certainly an intriguing idea, however. Spike Lee has just been talking about how he can’t get a movie financed — after Miracle at St. Anna no one even wants to make a sequel to Inside Man, which did quite well. But now there is this report, which says that Spike Lee is in talks to direct the long-rumored remake of Oldboy.

Twitch has the scoop, and while it’s the sort of report at which I might tend to look askance, the site has been correct recently with a couple big scoops, and Todd Brown is quite connected to the world of Asian cinema. So we’ll treat this as credible stuff for now, given the source. The site says the Mark Protosevich (Thor) script is still in play — this particular draft was reportedly going to be the new spine of the project when we last heard about it in November of 2010. At that point the rumored Steven Spielberg and Will Smith version, powered by an earlier script by the writer, had died. But Mark Protosevich was turning in a new draft, and a director shortlist cropped up that included Steven Spielberg, Matthew Vaughn and Danny Boyle.

Obviously that trio passed, so could it now fall to Spike Lee? And is this draft still hewing close to the original manga, more than the Park Chan-wook film that gained a worldwide fan base?

---

As things go with Spike Lee, this would be a very unexpected move, but an interesting gambit from a business standpoint. He just told Charlie Rose (via THR),

“Inside Man was my most successful film,” he said, adding that he had Washington and Foster on board for the sequel. “But we can’t get the sequel made. And one thing Hollywood does well is sequels. The film’s not getting made. We tried many times. It’s not going to happen.”

Is doing a long-in-development remake the best way to get a movie made these days for someone like Spike Lee? How utterly depressing. And yet stories of simmering grudges and vengeance are hardly alien to Spike Lee’s oeuvre, even if he hasn’t made anything quite like Oldboy. But that could be a good thing — assuming this report is on the money, Oldboy could be a bridge to new filmmaking territory for one of the most notable American filmmakers.

Cause it still has the capacity to surprise people.

Think about it,
if the movie takes ANY hard turn, regardless of whether it is the same turn as the original or not,
not only will it be effective because
a) Spielberg has proven that he excels at capturing gruesome events with gravity and gusto,
and
b) Smith has proven that he can be credible during what could otherwise be overplayed and underwritten;
it will almost undoubtedly throw every unsuspecting film goer (of which there will be many) into a mania.

Isn't being surprised or impressed one of the better reasons to go to the movies?

I firmly believe that these men together would stick to the basic idea - coldly served revenge - with the wisdom/savvy to let things stay appropriately dark.

Even if they do change the climactic reveal,
I see no reason to believe that either Spielberg or Smith would back away from a challenging subject.

I will admit one preemptive apology:
the ending will probably be sentimental.

Lest we forget,
the original did not end with the reveal.
It also did not end in the immediate aftermath of the reveal, when we witness the viscerally violent atonement of the lead;
a moment I have always remembered more than the exact points of the reveal.
It ends instead much later,
with two people trudging off into the snow

and then two people living in the snow.

The end comes slowly,
and the reveal ain't it.

So yes,
it will probably be overwrought in some way,
but I can't fault them for that.

Ultimately,
Spielberg is legitimately criticized but still one of the great directors;
Smith is faulted more for his plots than his presence;
and Old Boy is revered, adored, and probably overblown for the same reasons every other movie with a twist that people bought into is.

So why not?

EDIT:
One of my better written replies and I don't even bother to check the date on the story. Screw it, I'm leaving it up cause I believe in what I said. Now let's have Spielberg and Smith get together to make the greatest sci-fi blockbuster ever: The Stars My Destination.
