"Maybe the Worse Late Pass in PTP History: Forrest Gump"
Wed Nov-05-08 04:51 PM by walihorse

I just saw it about two weeks ago:

Great movie, i honestly did not know what the movie was about.

but gumpy was one lucky MF'er.

and sixth sense kid was in it, i didn't even know that.

so what's the PTP consensus on the movie

¿If a fat guy falls in the woods and there is no one around to see it, do the trees laugh?

i love the simple fact that he is involved in so much by pure accident. but while it's funny and almost spoofish, it's also heartwarming and well told. you can't help but like forrest. even his names' history is well told.

Forrest Gump could have been subtitled "Modern U.S. History 101 told in Two Hours". It takes you from segregation to Civil Rights, to Vietnam and the anti-war movement, to the excess of the 80s and its after effects later on, while all the while touching on advances in medicine, popular music, politics, capitalism, assassinations, black panthers, hippies, AIDS, and collegiate sports. Oh, and mental disabilities.

I think its an interesting movie just for that reason. Its obviously totally unbelievable that one man would partake in all those events, but I don't think its even meant to be believable on that front. Look at it as an overview of aspects of US History as seen through a top-form Tom Hanks. And since that movie, Lt. Dan has ALWAYS been ONLY Lt. Dan to me.

Be a stupid, simple, unquestioning retard and you'll succeed in life!

And that's my least problem with that milque-toast bullshit of a tepid, lowest-common-denominator of a waste of time and celluloid of a "movie".

Your late-pass is still waiting for you, when you realize what a trumped up pile of pandering bullshit that garbage is.

Go read some Hallmark cards, asshole.

That a movie that literally showed you every step of the characters life, even though he was the narrator himself, but that they smacked you over the head with any nuance that the movie intended, AND it made a ton of money, is a plain indicator of how intellectually lazy 90% of the US pop-consumption market is. There is nothing implied in that movie that also isn't shown; no point intended that isn't SPOKEN. The acting doesnt matter at all.

People that think The Matrix was "deep" or that Titanic was a top 10 movie ever also identify Forrest Gump as an "american classic"...

>He basically said that Forrest Gump was a film that showed
>that no matter how smart you are, or how hard you work, all
>the gains in life will be stumbled into by some lucky idiot.

actually, the movie isn't saying this at all. not one bit.

the film was a *fictional* story of ONE guy who had an amazing life in spite of his circumstance. yes, he is an idiot who stumbles upon his good fortune- but it does not convey the message that hard working intelligent people don't make gains in life. likewise, in no way did it ever communicate to me that all the gains in life will be stumbled upon by a lucky idiot-it merely told a story of one guy who did. he was also a guy who generally stood up for the right thing, kept all his promises, protected the people he loved, and saw every endeavor through no matter the potential outcome. actually, there were plenty of elements that stood out to me more then his incredible run of good luck.

if your professor deduced this message from the movie, i seriously question his own intelligence. it told a story; if it delivered any message, it was that it is POSSIBLE for ordinary (less then, in his case) people to lead an extraordinary life. another message? maybe we shouldn't look down so much on those with less then ourselves. we got to see how people treated forrest. he was aware of his intellectual shortcomings and he handled those offenses with a grace that was hardly warranted.

your professor should probably get his stuffy, over-analyze-the-lowest-possible-common-denominator head out of his ass.

....I agree with everything you said. Sheeesh, does every movie have to have a "deep" message that make you think? Can't some movies be made for strictly entertaining people without being frowned upon for not being challenging? I bet dude was stroking his shaft to his own "genius" when he thought up that drivel.

i mean, i thought it was a well done movie.

the acting tom hanks gave was awesome.

i mean the matrix and titanic weren't as good to me.

i really like the simpleness of the story, i mean i'm not sure if i was to take it as a drama or anything like that i took it a comedy.

dude didn;t do anything and got money, but at least it was humbling.

It's not a character study, and isn't intended to be. Forrest Gump is not so much designed as a character but as a device that makes it possible to study sociological and political history of last half of the 20th century and have it tie into itself.

If your professor was looking for a complex and nuanced character study he was looking in the wrong place.

I guess I missed the day in US History when an Alabama football player helped Vivian Malone at Foster Auditorium, making that whole civil rights things go away...after all Mississippi Burning or The Long Walk Home really failed to capture the heartwarming good natured spirit of white people in the south.

Or I guess I missed hearing about that same football player telling Kennedy he had to piss, which did just fine with explaining the importance and impact of the JFK administration.

Or later that same football player, now a vet, mooning LBJ, which was a great commentary on the history of the Vietnam war....countless movies failed to say just that: FUCK YOU LBJ! Least of all Deer Hunter, Platoon, Born on the Fourth of July (LT DAN?), Apocalypse Now...all didnt get just how nice and sweet we can be at disagreeing with an imperialist war. And FINALLY, we know who deep throat is! Jeez, and All the Kings Men was so shitty for making all that up.

Or that same person crossing the country running for four years, which was a fantastic way to transition the movie through the better part of the 70s because, god knows, nothing of sociological or political significance happened from about 1977 to 1981.

All it is an aw shucks, heart warming historical fiction chick flick for people that would rather not really examine the second half of the twentieth century or acknowledge the deep impact of the countries numerous political and social missteps; lets just pretend that if only a mildly retarded southerner were around, things could have been just peachy.

It's not as deep as the poster above makes it out to be, but it's not meant to be cynical in any way either. To say "it's ignoring all the bullshit of the past 50 years" is true, but it's not the point of the movie. It's like hating Blazing Saddles for not having a serious discussion of Jim Crow laws.

I've always been of the opinion that while it's always been overrated by the majority of America, it is a feel-good heartwarmer with fantastic acting and seamless special effects. And at the end of the day, that's why Americans like it-- not necessarily because they need every detail spelled out for them, but because of the uncynical spirit pervading through a well-executed Tom Hanks flick.

This was my original response earlier in the thread, which you may or may not have read.

>Forrest Gump could have been subtitled "Modern U.S. History
>101 told in Two Hours". It takes you from segregation to
>Civil Rights, to Vietnam and the anti-war movement, to the
>excess of the 80s and its after effects later on, while all
>the while touching on advances in medicine, popular music,
>politics, capitalism, assassinations, black panthers, hippies,
>AIDS, and collegiate sports. Oh, and mental disabilities.
>
>I think its an interesting movie just for that reason. Its
>obviously totally unbelievable that one man would partake in
>all those events, but I don't think its even meant to be
>believable on that front. Look at it as an overview of
>aspects of US History as seen through a top-form Tom Hanks.

Its not "deep"; but its not trying to be.

and thank god Forrest Gump TELLS US he's a simple man, because good lord if he hadn't that would be difficult to distinguish.
Meanwhile, I don't recall Pete Weir hitting us over the head with it in Witness or David Lynch with the Straight Story. Zemeckis makes mass market popcorn movies, meant to sell tickets and little else; that this happened to tug on the heart strings of aging baby boomers, exploit mid 90s political tensions and have Tom Hanks at the height of his popularity/ability was just a perfect storm for what it became. There's nothing else to really acknoweldge other than that it has mass appeal and made loads of money. Forrest Gump is, you know, disposable in the long run.
