I guess I missed the day in US History when an Alabama football player helped Vivian Malone at Foster Auditorium, making that whole civil rights things go away...after all Mississippi Burning or The Long Walk Home really failed to capture the heartwarming good natured spirit of white people in the south.
Or I guess I missed hearing about that same football player telling Kennedy he had to piss, which did just fine with explaining the importance and impact of the JFK administration.
Or later that same football player, now a vet, mooning LBJ, which was a great commentary on the history of the Vietnam war....countless movies failed to say just that: FUCK YOU LBJ! Least of all Deer Hunter, Platoon, Born on the Fourth of July (LT DAN?), Apocalypse Now...all didnt get just how nice and sweet we can be at disagreeing with an imperialist war. And FINALLY, we know who deep throat is! Jeez, and All the Kings Men was so shitty for making all that up.
Or that same person crossing the country running for four years, which was a fantastic way to transition the movie through the better part of the 70s because, god knows, nothing of sociological or political significance happened from about 1977 to 1981.
All it is an aw shucks, heart warming historical fiction chick flick for people that would rather not really examine the second half of the twentieth century or acknowledge the deep impact of the countries numerous political and social missteps; lets just pretend that if only a mildly retarded southerner were around, things could have been just peachy.
