A lot of it was shot in Gross Pointe. If you wanna consider that Detroit. And some in Royal Oak I believe. The new film production incentives has meant a LOT of movies shooting in Michigan. I sure hope it keeps up.

Eastwood must be the least self-aware actor alive if he looked at the scenes used in the trailer and didn't consider that he's basically parodying himself here. I mean, pointing a shotgun at a bunch of kids and telling them to get off his lawn in his gruff old man voice? The finger guns? That look on his face when his kids try putting him in a home? It seems unfathomable for this to be anything other than an ironic B-movie, but I guess Clint's serious if this is already receiving Oscar buzz. It just seems ridiculous from that trailer.

Don't get me wrong, it was a kick seeing ol' Clint up there, spittin' out cuss words and racist invective like he was Archie Bunker's pops...

In fact, Clint the Actor was pretty goddamn fun to watch.

But the problem is that Clint the Director got in the way of the fun, by once again insisting that he shoot the first draft of the script.

It needed at least one more rewrite. This film, as written, is terrible, full of bad dialogue, stereotypical characters, and scenes that appeared to be lifted straight out of films like Boyz in the Hood, South Central, and 187. No, seriously, there were shots and dialogue that appeared to be jacked DIRECTLY from those films, as if the cat who wrote it watched a gang of these movies and decided to make the white guy in Minneapolis version (the original draft was set in Minneapolis, which is where the writer is from; once Clint decided to make the movie the setting was changed to Detroit).

Oh, and the Asian girl is cute as shit.

***(CHRIS HANSEN EDIT: she's 16 years old, have a seat, Zoo)***

The tone of the film, for at least 2/3 of it, is pretty light in comparison to Clint's previous heavy works... but then the contrived and "serious" 3rd act comes, and all bets are off.

So I'd say if you like Clint and just HAVE to see it, then go ahead and be prepared to see Clint the Actor bring the hate, but also be prepared to be let down by Clint the Director.

i didn't think i can be more let down by clint than 'heartbreak ridge' with stitch jones played by mario van peebles, but i was wrong.

it's basically 'million baby' mixed with 'boyz n da hood' and 'joy luck club.' there's so many issues with this movie, i can't even begin.

the catholic storyline and this kid obsessing he go to confession because his wife said it was important got hella irritating.

the fucking dialogue when the white guy (who happens to have his hat turned backwards) walks with the asian chick and gets stopped by the black guys. IT WAS HORRID. "call me bitch and a ho in the same sentence why don't you." it sucks badly.

and don't let me get started with the barber shop scene. the ending was a lot heavier than the entire movie, but seem unjustified.

the acting was just bad. i can't say it any other way. i will be pissed if this gets a nod. i believe this movie has the 'cosby show' syndrome. on 'cosby show,' the focus was so much on bill cosby that the writing for everything else was just cheesy. his kids were extra corny and did stupid things so bill can take the show by schooling them. this movie is the same way. only focusing on clint's character as the mean old gruff, and totally not worrying about the quality of character development for anyone else.

don't go see this movie unless you just wanna 1) see clint and 2) laugh your ass off. cuz that's just about all it's good for.

the fact that this flick hasn't been universally assailed is beyond me. if ANYTHING from this joint is nominated, i will be MAD. this flick is utter bullshit. the acting is fucking terrible. that kid who played Tao is fucking HORRIBLE! the only ones that could act were the two girls (the sister and the "hot" chick).

eastwood was...old. and winking at the fuckin camera.

joint got more melodrama than tyler perry's shit. and the shifts in tone are worse. one scene, eastwood teaching the kid to talk like a racist and they laughing it up...next scene, the house getting shot up and the sister getting beaten by gang members.

wack.

But then again, I've thought the majority of Clint's last several flicks were grossly overrated, so I thought maybe I was just getting biased.

Still, I'll keep an open mind. I just think the trailer looks sooooooo bad.

The writing of the films up to this point (well, up to this year) is FAR superior to the writing of this film. And it's not even a contest.

Pretty much everything else about the movie was subpar (the acting by Tao and the priest, the overall story, a lot of the script), but I thought Eastwood was good enough to keep the thing together. Oh, and the score was good too.

43. "The script was terrible. Like, really really bad. (mini-review)"
In response to Reply # 0

1. Clint the Director, as always, is in fine form. He has great camerawork, great lighting, sets a mood just right, per usual.

2. Clint the Actor... well, he's never been the greatest actor. Sorry, it's true. He's just great on screen because he has such a magnetic personality. I never once thought of him as Walt in this film. He's simply Clint growling a lot. There were moments of nice acting... but just that: moments. He knows as a Director how to light himself though... the lights do a lot of the acting for him.

3. The script is really terrible. Like, one of the worst of the year easily. It tries to make the racism funny because "hey, look, Clint Eastwood is being a grumpy racist, haha!" And it is fun to watch him swear... until the end, when the audience is smiling at the heartwarming beaner and zipperhead comments he's still making. It's offensive... the movie didn't need CONSTANT racist comments in order to make him a racist grump. Not to mention how poorly every character is written. All of them.

4. The supporting acting, by every character, is lousy. All around. When Clint is doing the best "acting" on the screen, we've got problems. And that's a big deal-- I think about Million Dollar Baby. Great direction, alright Clint performance, okay script with one-dimensional characters, but fabulous supporting cast. This time, it's allllll Clint. There's a scene where young Asian bol has to bang on the wall yelling "WAAAALT! WAAALT! WAAAAALT!" It's easily one of the most unintentionally funny scenes of the year.

In short, if you're a Clint fan, and you think him saying racial slurs will be funny, prepare yourself for the laugh riot of the year. But the amount of accolades this film is getting is preposterous, and lower your expectations several miles.

I thought the only decent performance was from the sister next door, but even then the script shot her in the foot: that scene with the 'gangbangers' when she gave that speech was particularly bad.

the local weekly zine i write for in columbia, sc gave the movie 5 stars and i pretty much shit my pants.

it was nothing more than giving clint his props for his career and not for the film. come to think of it 'changeling' wasn't very good either. clint was 0/2 this year.

but yea.

I thought it was awesome, might be because of drugs, but i thought it was great. I thought the racist dialogue was originally gonna be more directed at the Chines, but i liked how they flipped it with the sister correcting all of his stereotypes than using them against him and the Grandma was also great "Why don't you move white man" and then outspits him. I guess i feel differently because i went to see this specifically for comedic value and it had a lot.

I thought the racist banter worked very well actually. normally little things like this really get to me, but it was worked in well and clint pulled it of great. the movie had themes that focused around racism/prejudices amongst people in general (not just white/vietnamese/black, etc.) I thought it was well rounded and presented a fairly objective view of the everyday prejudices/stereotypes that are associated with various cultures.

IMO, besides all the small things people are nitpicking about. at the end of the day, this movie was EXTREMELY entertaining and to me, it never lagged or lost steam. every scene was interesting and intriguing (cmon, the bathtub scene where he's talking to his dog?) i love it.

The acting isn't NEARLY as bad as people are making it out to be. there are definitely some scenes that are a bit overdone and "slightly" unrealistic, but they're not bad enough to ruin the movie by any means. and until i read this site, i never even gave much thought to it.

I honestly don't think certain characters need development (ie, ANY TARANTINO FLICK). this is the type of movie where the characters are more symbolic than anything. the preacher, the asian boy (clint is living through him?) the preacher is like clint's wife in the afterlife badgering him etc. etc. you can make connections all day, but the point is, the characters played their respective roles well enough that the film remained cohesive and interesting. they're not gonna get oscar nods, but who cares?

it's not a masterpiece by any means, but look at a flick like "The Departed." There's SEVERAL plot holes in that movie that IMO, completely throw the entire movie off course (still a great flick) but it still won Best Picture.

funny, i watched ben button before this, and Grand Torino was a MUCH more entertaining movie.

this line was awesome:

Gangsta: "Go back in the house old man"
Clint: "I'll put a hole in your face and go back in the house, and sleep like a baby!"

kid actor was pretty wretched, especially toward the end of the film.

I think this was worth my dough though
