This was inspired by the Heat post, which for good reason I stayed away from. Michael Mann's aim is true when it comes to making man movies, and this movie is in my top 20, maybe like 20, but still. I can't articulate exactly why I like it but when I watch it, I just want to live the life of the new Crockett and Tubbs. I saw this with with my wife and two friends and they were literally speechless in a a bad way. They didn't know what to make of it. I set the bar Cheech and Chong high for this movie and it didn't disappoint. I like it even more upon repeated viewings.

I tried on multiple occasions to watch Miami Vice and it's just not that interesting. I absolutely cannot sit through this movie. It's entirely too long. The sounds aren't even really there. And the whole vibe isn't Miami Vice at all. --------------------------------------- http://i37.tinypic.com/5x8u9k.gif

where Colin Farrell is convincing as a tough guy. His Crockett is so burnt out, it's easy to believe he could do vice. Honestly, I think Mann's best job with this movie was to get this type of performance from him. Jamie Foxx turns in a subtle performance. The chemistry between these two is convincing because it doesn't show those played out bonding scenes that are standard in so many black-white action movies. Their friendship is understood. I get the sense that these guys could not and would not work with anyone else, which is just like the original series. In the same way, the movie shows how the two cops are individuals. There is a lot of trust between them that plays out in a real way and does not bow to the audience. To me that takes balls as a filmmaker not to dumb that aspect down for the audience, and yes, not everybody seems to respond. Yet, IMHO, this is how men who are equipped to deal with heavy situations talk and act in real life.

Don Johnson > Colin Farrell Phillip Michael Thomas > Jamie Edward James Olmos >>>>>>>>>>>>> whoever it was that played Castillo (who? exactly) The original Switek & Larry > the new ones
and, dare I say it, for the purposes of this argument, Phil Collins > Mogwai

Since there's no need to eviscerate the plot or the terrible acting, I'll add this:
Like most movies in Miami, it will have you thinking that certain geographic areas are connected when they aren't, that certain spots are in downtown (for instance) when they aren't. ...it is just....bad.

you have 1/16 chance of seeing this (MY COLLECTION IS NOT COMPLETE). It is one of my prized possesions: my son will have/understand this someday more so than Scarface. This is Michael Mann son. This is what he tried to do after his biggest commercial success. Why do you think that is so? This is how you guide the youth y'all!

i didn't see this movie in the theaters because i kept hearing how it was hot trash...even a friend of mine who's movie tastes are very similar to my own walked out in the middle.
i loved it though. it evoked the true feel of the tv show, the nonsensical flaunting of cars and ass, overly cool characters and a music video type feel. people thought the movie was way too long but i even thought the pacing good, iono, it kept my interest and i've watched it multiple times over.

I have no idea why I watch it. I don't think it's a great movie, but I enjoy the hell out of it. Something about the visuals and the mood talk to me. I've actually talked to a therapist about it. Still don't have an answer
