I think "D*ck in a Box" earned him carte blanche. What other SNL cast member could get away with skits like "Space Olympics," "Andy Punches People While They're Eating," and "Roy Rules" (my personal favorite).

A couple of their early digital shorts were basically the same as some of the lonely island stuff they'd already done.
And I agree that they might get carte blanche. I mean, their brand of humor is so stupid that it's hard to really pitch it. Most of their stuff (save for Dick in a Box) must sound insane in a pitch meeting.

the most bizarre sketches i've ever seen on that show almost all featured will ferrell + were usually the last sketch of the night -- i'm guessing that was his unofficial "show's basically over, go batshit" slot

Sure, he didn't have a lot of success in the playoffs, but who did? Certainly not Fred Armisen.

Without the requisite talent.
That's where you get the ridiculously bad moments in SNL from. That's also where you get the ridiculously good moments. That's basically SNL's formula, throw it at the wall and see what sticks. If it sticks, keep throwing it until it becomes a nasty, goopy, disgusting mess that no one likes anymore.
That show has a very poor internal meter, relies too much on the luck of finding talented people and catchy hooks. There's not enough craft in that show.
But then, when you think about it, there's that Lorne Michaels quote that I will paraphrase, "we don't go on because we're ready, we go on because it's 11:30." I think that really says it all.
