IMO you just need that ONE role that sets you up. Ledger had it with Brokeback, and now Gosling has had it with Half Nelson. Obviously Ledger was on a serious path to being a great one...Gosling can do it.
co-sign - Amazing in Half-Nelson and superb in Lars and the Real Girl. The guy can do many different roles and still be impressive. But doesn't appear to be going the overly commercial route.
He's shown his potential in the past with things like 54. He has an earnestness to him that would really serve him extremely well in some dramatic role.

he rarely commands that leading actor status. he's performances are always memorable but usually in a supporting role. traitor was his first as a lead. has he been a lead in something else?
I like to think he's still got at least one more great role left in him. If the right role came along & a director was willing to give him a chance he could get that oscar he should've had for Tombstone
