"How To Lose Money and Alienate Investors. brit-com = failure"

british comedians and their lame, practiced stuttering deliveries don't be making no money. why they gettin star vehicles? most americans have no tolerance for this affected, condescending brand of comedy.

if there's one thing i give stupid americans credit for is not allowing a "british" comic to become a superstar here.

think of the brits that have had success in america and you'll notice none of them employ that stupid, artificially-awkward style.

benny hill
sasha baron cohen
rowan atkinson

pegg and gervais need to sit the fuck down and stop wasting people dough.

Dude is the king of the stuttering comedy style you speak of, and almost all of his comedies make money here in the U.S. They're cheap, and they almost always make their money back (save "Mickey Blue Eyes" and "Small Time Crooks"). Some are even hits ("Notting HIll," "Bridget Jones Diary," "Nine Months," "Love Actually," "Four Weddings," etc.)

that you made this post about. It's really a British thing. It's the humor of his style that makes him an American draw, not his dramatic ability.

>i said british comedians.

Fair enough.

>and he was paired with red-hot (career-wise) leading lady's
>everytime he had a hit.

Nope, he was in it, that means he's partly responsible for it's success.

Which his films always play for humor.

His comedies are the only films that make any money in the U.S. He's not getting cast in American for his dramatic chops. It's the "Oh gosh" stuttering stuff he usually pulls.

The rom-com, gross-out-com, wacky-Brit-surrounded-by-Americans-com... pass on those, Pegg. Make some more awesome shit with the Shaun of the Dead/Hot Fuzz crew.

what? i've seen a lot of work from both pegg and gervais and i don't recall one scene in which either stutters. i think i know the kind of persona you're talking about (it sounds like andy kaufman's latka tbh) but i've never seen pegg or gervais try to pull it off. perhaps you could cite some specific examples?

In response to Reply # 0

FOH. There is an audience for heady, or as you put it "condescending", comedy in America and it's obvious given the success of the Daily Show, Colbert Report, hell The Soup or Best Week Ever; alot of us share cyncism and can get subtle, subject based jokes. As for the success of Simon Pegg or Ricky Gervais, give it time. Both are hugely popular and wealthy in England and only have one "american" movie under their collective belts; that Hot Fuzz or Shawn of the Dead jumped the ocean and did as critically as they did while gaining a cult following. Gervais did one movie that has made 60% of it's budget back in 3 weeks before going overseas, where it's bound to do great numbers later this month.
And lets not pretend like he wasn't a hit in Night at the Museum, a box office smash that he will be appearing in the sequal to. Way to forget that one.

So, in short: Wait till This Side of the Truth and Night at the Museum 2 to pass judgement on Gervais.

Pegg, I don't think he's ever going to be more than a British version of a Broken Lizard member.

rode for it? um, did i really? are you so mad that you assume i ride for every black film that comes out? i support them all, but i only ride for tyler, cube and a few other. i hoped off the spike wagon after inside man finished the white hipster co-opt movement that started with 25th hour. yeah, y'all really liked she's gotta have it. what in the fuck is that lie about?

once again, my angle has always been that spike thought this was gonna be his oscar year and he was gonna go apeshit when it doesn't get any noms.

you are a mad, dumb, ugly bitch.

and you mad.

The fact that you two eventually worked it out like normal humans doesnt erase the gigantic load of mad internet bullshit you were shoveling. But thats YOUR MO. But I know, these things rile you up to the point that clear-headed discourse gets lost in your PASSION.

Lol, I could give a fuck less about Basa's take on Spike cause I'm a grown man that knows when someone is just rabble-rousing and creating provocative arguments that have some validity, even if they can't be proved true. My argument is that Spike is an immense talent that sometimes gets derailed by agendas and reactionary filmmaking.

Vin Diesel is a clever, thoughtful dude who happens to look like a beast and has tried to balance his dorkiness with his look in Hollywood, leading to some awkward script choices. I think he has bad management, because Strays=quality. Fast and the Furious 1=quality popcorn flick. Pitch Black=quality popcorn flick. After that he overreached on films that didnt have the script or the direction to succeed. Simple..as...that.

Toby Young and his book are critical of the Hollywood system in ways that made him some enemies - including studio execs. I'm not surprised that it makes him look like a complete nincompoop.

This could have been a funny movie because there were some genuinely funny scenes in the book. But also smart ones. Simon Pegg was wrong for this. Broad comedy was wrong for this. Whatever failure you're looking at is a case of losing in translation.

I'm waiting for the DVD.

I think that is exactly what Hollywood (or maybe even British Film execs) thinks most Americans do want see, because those last two roles for Pegg and Gervais are pretty far removed from what they initally became successful doing (good shit like Extras, The Office, Spaced, SOTD)

I don't know how How to Lose Friends ended up being like that, what I heard of the book sounded darker.

ia pegg and gervais need to sit the fuck down

and write some original good shit like they used to. Hopefully "Paul" will see Pegg return to form.
