"Buffy the Vampire Slayer's "The Body""
Mon Oct-06-08 08:19 PM by Walleye

Sweet fucking Christ. I hadn't re-watched this until today.

To be more clear with an edit, it's episode sixteen of season five, the one where Buffy's mom died. It's like getting punched in the stomach for 45 minutes.

Even on it's own, its hearbreaking.

But when you have a campy, comic book, fantasy fest suddenly switch train tracks completely and expertly acted...woah.

I remember waiting for something 'Whedonesque' to break the mood, but it never came. Just great tv.

I'd lately remembered it as the only episode where literally nothing supernatural happens, but that isn't actually the case. At the end, when Dawn goes to look at the body in the (very poorly secured, considering it's Sunnydale) morgue, a vampire wakes up and attacks her. But even then, it's a short fight set up mostly to have Dawn inadvertently pull the sheet off of her mother and then stop the episode right before she touches her face. It was the best kind of awful.

Anyhow... my wife and I had been rewatching it from the beginning the past few weeks. I'm completely embarrassed that I never even considered giving it a chance while it was originally on the air.

Brutal. What's remarkable is how few of the devices used to help us share the disconnect and slowness seem artificial. Like you said, it's note perfect.

The above poster had it as top-5 in the Whedonverse, which is obviously a larger field than just BtVS. But I never watched Firefly and was sort of up-and-down on Angel so I don't feel quite as comfortable weighing in there.

Among the special or different Buffy episodes, I thought this one was better than "Hush" but I think I prefer "Once More with Feeling". Though I can probably be convinced to change my mind on that latter preference.

I think I'd change the order of the last two, but "Conversations with Dead People" is one of my favorites, even with the slight flaw of apparently being unable to include Tara as herself. I think I like "The Zeppo" better than "Fool for Love". That one is about as funny as the show got.

It feels weird to not include an episode that featured Angel, and in order to avoid just ripping off your list wholesale, I'd swap out "Fool for Love" with "Amends" (3.10), which introduces "The First" and has Angel try to kill himself.

Angel never really clicked with me. In fact, I didnt start watching his show until season 3. Even when I watch the reruns on TNT, it doesn't get interesting until halfway into season 2 ("dark" Angel vs. Dru and Darla).

"Amends" was a good ep, but the return of the First in the final season of Buffy killed the mystique of that villain/plot device.

"Once More with Feeling"? If that's the musical ep., then that's the one I've missed. Every time the series has been replayed I manage to miss that one and the "Hush" ep. Any help would be gladly appreciated.

She was awesome. In spite of taking, rightfully, a back seat to the original crew in the last two episodes of the series she still got a another great monologue on mortality and a nice, dignified death.

Any good fight scenes between a male and female (presumably Buffy, but Faith will do just fine) that have dialogue and use no weapons or props. Or, if they do, props that can be worked around.
