"Best in Film: 2008 (So Far)"

We're at about the 3/4 year point.

I figure this is an okay time to give props to some movies and cast and crew that might get knocked out of some year-end Top 5s or Top 10s because of the upcoming high profile releases.

This could also get some of us to check out some stuff we've put off for whatever reasons and/or check out stuff we haven't heard about.

So post up categories and list your choices (Top 5s or less, Top 10s or more, whatever).

I may be mistaken, but prior to that most if not all of its screenings in 2007 were on the festival circuit. It did have an Oscar qualifying week-run in L.A. on the last full week of Dec. '07. Then I think it opened in a few cities in January '08 prior to the 25th. I caught it in the theatre late Feb or March '08 (after the Oscars).

Granted, I've seen almost nothing but mainstream films so far this year so my list isn't very thorough.

And I'll fully admit that seeing Pineapple Express early before any ads ruined the jokes or hype gave me expectations helped it. I went in not really knowing what it was.

Part of me thinks I'm being a push-over just because she's a pretty face with a great body, but I truly was a fan of her emoting. Desperate, strong, playful, heart-broken, etc. Best parts of the movie were when she was on screen.

evern though it technically came out in one festival in '06 it wasn't officially released until early this year and it was amazing. Its from the direcotr of "The Cell".

The story is ver strange and heart arming as the young girl at the hospital befriends an injured stunt man who tells her stories and at the same time trick her into getting him medications. Its a funny, hear warming and sometimes sad film with AMAZING (yes it needed caps) cinemaotography that should be nominated and a gripping story with amazing acting from the girl and Lee Pace from "Pushing Daisies".

Its on DVD now. Its been advertised a bit on imdb recently.

In response to Reply # 31
Sun Oct-26-08 10:10 AM by avillago

My top 5 of 2008, so far...

1) Let The Right One In - A superb and fresh take on the vampire genre. Awesome!

2) The Good, The Bad, The Weird - One of the best action films ever...period. From the Korean director of "A Tale of Two Sisters" and "A Bittersweet Life". A korean spaghetti western with early 90s style John Woo flair.

3) Dark Knight - You know what it is...still holds up after the hype.

4) The Wrestler - A beautifully strong character study about a washed up WWF type wrestler from the 80s that is coming to amends with his age, his need to be loved, his loneliness, and so much more. Expect Mickey Rourke to win a best actor nomination with ease and be the favorite for best actor come early next year. It is heartbreaking to watch and you can't help to think that this is kind of like the bio-pic of Mickey Rourke, but as a wrestler and not an actor. Also, directed by Darren Aronofsky...yeah the director of "PI", Requeim For a Dream", "The Fountain". Totally different type of film for Aronofsky. This is Aronofsky's "There Will Be Blood". Just like no one expected that from Paul Thomas Anderson. You all will feel the same of Aronofsky doing this film and it could have a similar impact.

5) Slumdog Millionaire - An India version of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire??? Yeah, I was skeptical too. However, when you have the director Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, Millions, 28 Days Later, etc.) at the helm...it is so much more. It is more like a coming of age store in a unique setting...the slums of India. Think the fresh backdrop and kinetic energy style of film making in the same vein as "City of God", but more of a crowd pleaser. This will have the audience crying, smiling, standing, and applauding at the end. The official 2008 crowd-pleaser.

I know some of these have not hit the theaters yet, but when they do...these are must sees. I almost had trouble putting the "Dark Knight" at #3. Not the best year for films IMO...awards season is still coming though.

but you know they save the heavy hitters for the 4th quarter. It might seem like the year is 3/4 over, but nobody usually puts out their oscar-worthy shit before November...point being the best shit in the last 10 months probably wont stack up to the best shit from the next 2.

I could be wrong though...
