My top 5 of 2008, so far...
1) Let The Right One In - A superb and fresh take on the vampire genre. Awesome!
2) The Good, The Bad, The Weird - One of the best action films ever...period. From the Korean director of "A Tale of Two Sisters" and "A Bittersweet Life". A korean spaghetti western with early 90s style John Woo flair.
3) Dark Knight - You know what it is...still holds up after the hype.
4) The Wrestler - A beautifully strong character study about a washed up WWF type wrestler from the 80s that is coming to amends with his age, his need to be loved, his loneliness, and so much more. Expect Mickey Rourke to win a best actor nomination with ease and be the favorite for best actor come early next year. It is heartbreaking to watch and you can't help to think that this is kind of like the bio-pic of Mickey Rourke, but as a wrestler and not an actor. Also, directed by Darren Aronofsky...yeah the director of "PI", Requeim For a Dream", "The Fountain". Totally different type of film for Aronofsky. This is Aronofsky's "There Will Be Blood". Just like no one expected that from Paul Thomas Anderson. You all will feel the same of Aronofsky doing this film and it could have a similar impact.
5) Slumdog Millionaire - An India version of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire??? Yeah, I was skeptical too. However, when you have the director Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, Millions, 28 Days Later, etc.) at the helm...it is so much more. It is more like a coming of age store in a unique setting...the slums of India. Think the fresh backdrop and kinetic energy style of film making in the same vein as "City of God", but more of a crowd pleaser. This will have the audience crying, smiling, standing, and applauding at the end. The official 2008 crowd-pleaser.
I know some of these have not hit the theaters yet, but when they do...these are must sees. I almost had trouble putting the "Dark Knight" at #3. Not the best year for films IMO...awards season is still coming though.
