"The Dark Knight of Steel: WB to reboot Superman, make it gritty"
Fri Aug-22-08 01:42 PM by SoulHonky

WB is pulling a Hulk and rebooting a character a few years after a failed reboot. The twist? This time they are going to make Superman a grittier film. Not sure that makes sense as Superman was never really edgy.

"Robinov feels that "exploring the evil side to characters" is the way to approach all the DC characters. "We're going to try to go dark to the extent that the characters allow it." Including Superman."

Sounds like they are overreacting. Superman Returns made 200 million and was a god awful movie. If they had actually made a quality film, it could have doubled that.

(Oh, and for Orbit Established, you'll be happy to know that your Joker venom should be aimed at Jeff Robinov who, "At the script stage, Jeff really wanted us to be very clear on the Joker's lack of purpose," he says.)

---

The other interesting part of this story is that WB (which closed its indie arms Picturehouse and Warner Independent Pictures) is trimming it's releases down and focusing on big films. While that works with something like The Dark Knight, let's not forget that Warner Brothers also gave the world Speed Racer and The Invasion. I guess the thinking is that one huge success outweighs a couple of absolute bombs. And it's better to have a high quantity of blockbuster attempts so that one hits.

Darkseid or someone. Otherwise, we'll just have to sit through the millionth time in a comic book movie where the big climax is somehow related to the hero losing his powers. "Gasp! This time Lex Luthor has neopolitan kryptonite!"

I mean, really bad. Even by Van Damme's standards.

But yeah, they'd planned on making a follow up, it fell through, and they took all the sets and costumes they'd already made for it and turned it into "Cyborg."

Superman does have great stories to draw from. I'd love to see Action Comics #775 adapted into a full-length movie.

Personally, I think WB should take a gamble on making Superman movies that are non-linear and in a separate continuity from the last five Superman movies. That would give directors and writers enough freedom to tell a great story without having to worry about matching events in previous movies. The new movies can have a continuity on their own without referencing Superman: The Movie or Superman 2.

My main gripe about SR was that WB didn't give Supes a full reboot when he needed it just as bad as Batman.

Ever since guys like Miller and Moore started re-imagining the Dark Knight, everyone wants to deconstruct every damn superheo and "see what makes them tick." Sorry, but Superman isn't nearly as interesting. Just give him something to punch.

51. "Warners Bros.' brass understands one thing: Money"
In response to Reply # 49

I'd also hazard a guess that very few of these Warner executives actually understand DC characters. They see them as assets that can or can't make them money. And they hire others to make sure they maximize their money-making potential (some of whom don't understand the characters either).

The executives look at "The Dark Knight" and see that it's a "dark" movie about a "dark" character that will surpass $500 million domestic by the end of this weekend. Then they look at the Superman franchise, which hasn't been successful in close to 30 years now. So they figure, fuck it, what worked for Batman should work Batman.

Mind you, I'm not MAD at Batman or Nolan or TDK movie or anyone who's ever written a Batman comic, it's just that Batman is a certain type of comic character that has resonated both as a comic book and movie character when portrayed a certain way.

People weren't complaining about how Superman was portrayed. The problem was that the story was horrible and it wasn't a fresh start. WB is letting that TDK gross get to their head. What they aren't realizing is that TDK's tone was exactly what Batman was all about. They need to continue the trend of letting the director guide the movie. It has worked for Spiderman, Batman, 300, Hellboy, and Sin City. Why is this so hard to understand?

Not saying the parallels aren't there, and not saying I don't dig that sort of analysis on an intellectual level, but Singer got waaaaaay too heavyhanded with the symbolism and didn't have enough popcorn shit to balance it out with. There's plenty food for thought, but my inner child is left starving.

It's almost as if Superman is such a familiar character that filmmakers just take his ass kicking for granted. The ass kicking is always assumed, so they can waste time showing you how mopey he can be.

like i said, the script was HORRID...

and i somewhut disagree with overusing it, to me it should of been the central focus like the definition of herosim was to TDK...

the thing about it is they managed it wrong...they make it a point and continued to make it a point, but it was never a central part of the movie...

have superman killed and then come back to life in the following movie.....

I just hope they dont start making shit up, which is like crazy in itself, because its a fictional character, so it is already made up.

Superman's character has always been angel-like, in the sense he has always been viewed as a savior in Metropolis, different from Batman being observed as a wild vigilante in Gotham, so to all of sudden add grit to his make-up would not make sense

The average movie-goer that just wants to see an explosive, action packed movie might be enthralled, but your diehard DC/superman fans will be miffed about it, and the franchise will have to be re-built again.

Leave it as it is, but incorporate the Justice League into the movie, then add a kick ass plot, and I'm sure it will be successful.

Bottomline is adults are the audience for these comic book movies. We are not in the 80s anymore, where parents were taking kids to see these movies, and the kids wanted to see superman. Adults are now the kids, and they are not trying to view some happy go lucky super hero crap....That here I come to save the day shit is dead.

Kevin Smith wrote a whole script for "Superman Lives," which had the Doomsday saga, Brainiac, and Lex Luthor. It was pretty good too. It just never got out of the development Hell. It was one of the many incarnatons of the Superman "reboot," that was then handed over to Tim Burton, and then became "Super Returns."

They should have put the script in production, instead of scraping it for something that had already been covered.

Keep the principle of the character in tack, but change his endeavors.Sounds like simple math to me.

and has a built-in fanbase.

but like someone else said, superman just needs to punch some shit. give him a powerful villain one that is wrecking shit around the world, and they will have a hit. they should have an idea in mind for a follow-up film too.

it needs to be brainiac, darkseid, or doomsday.

give him the black and silver suit. no cape.

1. Villian needs to be able to physically kill supes as well as be smarter then him. Who is that? BRAINIAC & LEX

2. Put Lex Luthor in his office calling shots from behind the scenes. No disrespect to Gene Hackman and Kevin Spacey but Lex is not some criminal super genius with wacky plots about real estate and trying to kill superman. Lex is like anti bruce wayne. He is a billionaire corporate strategist who rarely gets his hands dirty. They portrayed him all wrong in the movies. Put him in his damn office and have Brainiac doing all the legwork.

3. No damn baby with Lois Lane. As a matter of fact they should not be married or dating. She should sexy but strong. If Monica Belluci was 10 years younger and didnt have an accent she would be perfect.

Make it a comedy. Make it light-hearted but at the same time appealing to kids (Spider-Man) . That's the way to go, something different. Throw Lex in the mix and have Brainiac or Bizarro be shown at the end to lead off to the sequel. The sequal will be dark, but not too dark (Hellboy) Have the third movie be darker, against Doomsday (The Dark Knight) . Also, call it Man of Steel.

not in a literal sense...

but the character Superman/Clark Kent is set for a particular period 1950s - 1960s.....

the character has too many flaws to fit into a realistic new millenium world that the Dark Knight exist in...

his costume, Lex Luthor, Lois Lane, his occupation as a mild mannered reporter is all outdated and in serious need to be modernized by comic book writers...

any movie with Superman will suck because they are afraid of placing him in a setting that he could truly exist with a formable foe besides Lex Luthor, General Zod, or the evil incarnate of himself...

thats why he should remain a cartoon character.....

On The Lookout 4:
some new music. WTF is going on this year?

The movie will very likely suck, but that doesn't mean it will bomb at the box office. If it brings in a lot of dough, than obviously it will be a big W for WB, even if the movie blows. If they expecting Dark Knight numbers, though, then they just out their damn minds.

have braniac searchignt o kill the last of the kryptons for some unknown reason (who cares really)

to do this he breaks doomsday out (we call him that when he lands)
and sends him to earth where he has picked up the signature of some kryptons (supes and kid)

supes really gets to cut loose with dommsday when he threatens the kid and tears the city to rubble.

after dommsday and supes kill each other, braniac comes in and easily mops the floor with supes and kills him....duh duh duh

sequal...
