10 reviews in.

That doesn't mean much to me, but it's interesting that it's getting reviews like this. I'm not expecting something great but I think it'll be pretty good.

I still can't believe it was only a $72 million budget. I can't wait.

>maybe not box office wise but this has the potential to be a

You know the 1st trailers really didn't do much for me but it is starting to look better & better each time I see more clips. Perlman is perfect in that role & I kinda dig Selma Blair there as well. After Pan's Labyrinth I expect the visuals to be a bit better for this sequel as I wasn't too impressed with the cgi in the 1st one.

>though i'm hearing from people who have seen dark knight that
>it's a best picture contender...word?

I made my girl watch the making of featurette that premiered on HBO last night & luckily it convinced her to agree to check out the midnite showing while we're down in Maui next week. At 1st she was givin me a lot of shit about wanting to be indoors for anything down in Hawaii but she's gettin just as stoked as I am now for it. I would've gone by myself regardless but it's nice to know she's on board now as well. I'd love to see it get nominated for best pic but its still a looooong way to go before all the big Oscar contending movies come out.

pan's labyrinth maybe amazing, however the nolan's impressive track record speaks for itself, and from the 30 plus reviews i've read on the dark knight....people are already hailing that a masterpiece near comparison to in between the godfather & heat..and we're talking about a comic book movie here...

i have larger faith in nolan than del toro as for right now

I was pretty certain but people were getting so hyped for this I thought maybe he just had a writing/production credit on the first.

I'm glad people are finally getting hipped to del Toro. He's been doing really good work for too long.

The final battle with the golden army is better than the Iron Man finale w/ Iron Monger, but it wasn't enough to top the movie overall. I don't remember many specifics from the 1st one but seems the smart-assness & joking manner from the character worked better in that one. There is a great scene where him & Sapien get drunk off Tecates & talk about chics tho.

Luke Gross is a solid villain. & del Toro knocks it out the park with the creepy creatures again. Especially Wink & the Forest God. The tooth faries got a little annoying after awhile but the Hellboy/Kraus fight is one for the books. Selma Blair didn't really do much for me this time around tho. Same with Jeffrey Tambor.

I haven't seen too many movies in the theaters this year, but this is my favorite of the bunch. The writing was a lot better and it was much easier to get the Hellboy character. The humor in the first film was a little uncomfortable because it fell so flat so often, but it worked a lot better.

I was pretty happy to see the new leader of the group but I shouldn't have been surprised considering there was a one shot explaining his origin not so long ago.

I'd definitely put this over Iron Man, and it's flirting with being the best "superhero" adaption yet.

and so much more. I think this summer has been great when it comes to comic-book movies. It will end with the best of the bunch next friday. Can't wait!!

other than that, I give props to Del Toro on imagination and innovation with puppetry. He's the right man for the Hobbit film

I thought this movie sucked....I really didn't like it at all. It was SO corny and stupid, with an awful script. Some of the characters looked pretty cool/scary, and there were a couple of cool fights, but overall the movie was gay as hell.

I don't want to waste my time typing an indepth review over an awful movie my friend drug me to (he hated it too for what it's worth). I didn't like it at all and thought "gay as hell" summed it up pretty good for me. To me this was like a World of Warcraft movie or something. Just really stupid, and that's all I'm going to say about it.

The action scenes in this flick are outstandingly staged. Every time you think, "Well, they won't be able to top THIS fight scene," they do. For the first time this year, there was a climactic fight scene that didn't disappoint (yeah, even in Iron Man, I wished for more from the final fight).

There's a Best Makeup Oscar here in the bag. The creatures in this film, and it appears that they are NOT for the most part computer generated, are absolutely extraordinary. Even more visionary creatures here than in Pan's Labyrinth. It's just a brilliantly created world that Del Toro has visualized, and it's flawlessly realized.

He's not going for JUST an action flick either. The shadows of the film Frankenstein are absolutely all over the place here. It's the type of shit that absolutely points out the flaws of both Hulk films. The "freak" mindstate, the feeling that you'll never be accepted, and that maybe you're doomed to be the bad guy... that's all dealt with throughout the whole film here. And they deal with it alongside some spectacular action sequences.

What else is notable? The prologue, which is brilliantly executed. The performance by Luke Goss of the villain, which really exceeded my expectations and managed to top the badassness of the Nazi knife dude from the first flick. All the couple banter between Perlman and Blair, both of whom are great. Perlman seems even more in touch with the character this time around too.

So... yeah. I loved it. Totally original, and really really fun.

I also loved the nod to middle-earth with the final scene being held in New Zealand. Also the small inside joke in the beginning of the movie when young Hellboy is watching Howdy Doody when he said "He's real, he's not a puppet" Along those lines. I smiled. Anyways, I laughed, teared up, and just felt great about the movie.

one minor thing though, but I actually figured it out is that the reason why Abe didn't get the girl is because he was dealing with infatuation and Hellboy was dealing with love. I thought that was cool, knowing Abe would risk earth for his love, but Hellboy thought that was just dumb of him to do so. At first I was kinda felt bittersweet when Abe didn't get the Princess. But realize he wasn't "in love" but infatuated with her because she had common interest with him. You can take that in a real life situation, unlike Hellboy and Liz, they been together for quite some time, dealing with problems but they know what love is.

this is a good date movie, especially the comedy in the middle of the movie between Abe and Hellboy, I swear everyone was just laughing for about 5 minutes straight.

Such as Hellboy Jr. at the beginning of the film.
Man, that did not give me a good jump onto the flick.
I laughed through everything with that buck toothed kid.

But the movie was cool and what we have come to expect from Del Toro.
The casting is cool and these characters are great too.
Abe might be my favorite (except for the weak love subplot with the albino chick).

Overall, it was pretty entertaining, but still not near as good as Iron Man or Incredible Hulk.

Everything really works so much better than the first film. The relationships are all really nicely played and I think that says a lot considering the genius of the set design, make-up and effects could have overshadowed everything.

Great stuff.

I mean, I'm a comic book dude. so i know all about suspension of disbelief. But this flick seemed to be...just dumb as hell.

I wanted to see way more of the fantasy creatures and much less of the corny jokes from ron perlman. Matter of fact, the whole concept of hellboy (even the comic) just seemed silly to me. A demon that drinks beer and smokes cigars, and has all the mannerisms of every b-movie cop? Ain't feelin that

Meanwhile, all types of gorgeous imagery and great concepts are just thrown away throughout the movie.

Ehh, i give it a C

over all it wins out well, because this movie had a "heart" that all the superhero movies thus far this year have sorely lacked. i cared a little more overall.

some shit though... felt a little muddled. i haven't seen the first one. i don't know shit about the characters or the history or stories.

that fish dude was basically useless. i dunno why homegirl didn't go johnny storm on everyone. actually, everyone but hellboy was useless. they served minor, supporting purposes but they didn't get down like i kept thinking they would.

kraut (thats krauSSE!!!!) was cool when he took over the machine.

the visuals were great. the dialogue was so-so but thankfully all the player did a great job.

i loved hellboys ho hum, aid back nature whenever it came time to whoop somebodies ass too. i imagine this leads into a third? since he is supposed to destroy the world or whatever.

thing is, it had some flaws but hat it did right, it did it and did it very well. and tahts waht counts. i enjoyed the whole thing.

I just saw it tonight and I hated it. I don't like to use the word abortion while reviewing a movie, but that's the only way i can describe the trite on screen that I was sitting through.

*spoilers*
It looked as tho del Toro wanted to re-use the creatures from Pans Labyrinth. I mean, obviously he didn't use the exact creatures, but the one that got the metal shard out of Hellboy was either the sibling, or otherwise close relative of the creature in Labyrinth at the table of food she wasn't supposed to eat from. The whole (seemed like) 20 minute long scene of HB and Abe getting drunk listening to that awful song, that is still burned into my head, made me want to hang myself. And overall I didn't see the point of the movie. When I watch a movie, I try to see the story the director is trying to tell and the only thing I had while coming out of this train wreck was that Guillermo del Toro spends a lot of time dreaming up crazy looking monsters, but not a lot on actual substance in the story.

Overall it was a beautiful movie to look at, but not a great one to watch.

hopefully they don't take as long to make a third one as they did with the second.

The only question I had, was what was the deal with the rings that Krauss had? They showed Krauss with them but then didn't do a damn thing with them after that. Is it suppose to be some prelude to the third movie?

lots of good stuff: the opening story Hellboy's father told of the Golden Army with the sorta creepy animation was a nice touch. The troll market, the Angel of Death, the Golden Army... Del Toro really has a way with bringing that weird fantastical stuff to life.

Prince Nuada was an intriguing enemy - he wasn't just pure evil, you could see his point of view and what he was fighting for, and Hellboy could too. and he was a badass with that lance. his training scene & fight scenes w/Hellboy were really cool.

he reminded me alot of Elric actually. if they ever do an Elric movie they could just revisit Nuada and be set, looks like that was a big influence on the character.

and it was cool how they based alot of the stuff on old Irish/Celtic mythology: Nuada is the name of the King of the old Irish gods (who were very elf-like) that ruled Ireland in ancient times & went to war with the Gaels aka ancient Irish tribes, and after they lost to the humans, went to dwell underground and in the forests & diminished over the ages. Hence Prince Nuada & the Golden Army being in an underground lair in Ireland. Balor was another old Irish god, and in the movie King Balor's horns looked like Cerrunos, the Celtic god of the underworld. And they used ancient Gaelic for the elves' language in the movie. all that stuff was a very nice touch I thought.

Cool looking characters. I wasn't blown away by the action scenes and the story itself was about as standard as they come. It also was odd that the bad guys were kind of right (we have fucked this planet up) but they didn't really address that at all.

Two major issues I had were: why did Hellboy wait so long to challenge for the crown (and did he ever learn about that or did he listen to the monologue in the beginning?) and why didn't the princess just off herself to save her father? It was one of those: why'd you wait an entire movie to do this?

She loved him so much that in one of the first scenes of the movie she agrees with her dad that they should kill him? And she claimed to know their connection since they were young so it's not like the whole, if I'm hurt you're hurt thing should have been a surprise. She basically OK'd the death but then did nothing when the brother was killing the Dad.

On top of that, it wasn't like she was ever trying to convince the guy otherwise so once he had the final piece, it was kind of a done deal that she was going to die. I'm not sure what else the plan really was.

I mean, these were some of the most selfish superheroes ever. In two cases they chose their own love and self-interest over the fate of the world. And it wasn't like they even gave it a second thought. It was 100% me over the fate of the world. With heroes like these, who needs enemies?

Eh, it just didn't work for me, especially the second time around. Dude hands over the piece that will destroy the Earth and nobody really takes issue. And one 'Don't hurt him." and Hellboy decides to take it easy on the Prince. I felt like they fast forwarded through the story parts. They'd bring up an issue and then not really go anywhere with it. It just didn't play.

I was just thinking of how he tore through all those dudes by himself in that scene, forgot about that part.

well Hellboy understood so I know why he wouldn't take issue with it too tough. and what's Liz gonna say? she just agreed to the destruction of the entire world to save Hellboy's life.

I guess I can see how you'd feel that way.

by-the-numbers script, horrific relationships, average fights, but nice make-up and CGI

Visually, this movie is stunning. But the content falls short.
