"Eddie Murphy better not be fucking with my emotions (c) Big Worm"

http://punchlinemagazine.com/blog/eddie-murphy-to-return-to-stand-up-comedy

To the delight of stand-up comedy fans — and people who like good movies — Eddie Murphy recently announced that he will begin to phase out his movie career and head back to stand-up comedy stage. Murphy told Extra:

Fifty years (old) I’ll have been making movies thirty years and I have close to fifty movies and it is like why am I in the movies,’ Murphy commented. “I’ve done that part now. I’ll go back to the stage and do standup.

If you’re wondering when this phasing out of the old movie career is starting, Murphy promises that after his upcoming film, Meet Dave is finished, he’ll start concentrating on stand-up. But does Murphy still have the edge after making so many family friendly romps to create an amazing hour of stand-up comedy? Fingers crossed. Fow now, enjoy some classic Murphy.

"Shrek" would not have been what it was without Eddie playing Donkey and he gave an Oscar worthy performance in "Dreamgirls".

director brian robbins (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0005367/#director) only makes masterpieces.

"Even 'Norbit' got a nomination... which I think is great. Too often, the academy ignores movies that aren't good." -- Jon Stewart at last year's Academy Awards

i couldn't agree more. and yet eddie returned to brian robbins for "meet dave" after "norbit" cost eddie the only chance he'll ever have at an oscar. brian robbins must have something on eddie. eddie claims to be embarrassed by "bhc3"... how does he honestly feel about the art he's created with mr. robbins?

many critics had eddie penciled in as the winner in their oscar predictions until "norbit" hit theaters.

the sad part in all this is that "meet dave" will hit $50M it's opening week (thanks to a truly ignorant movie going public that gave away $35M to "the happening" even after receiving 19% at rotten tomatoes) and robbins/murphy will continue to make SHITE movies together. (whether eddie claims to be retiring or not.)

so after collectin all them checks for decades, realizin he's gettin older, and thinkin bout how he got enough stacks for the next few generations of Murphys to be livin well, he wants to return to his first love...he prolly been thinking bout it for a while...the cool thing is, he he feels like he doesn't have the chops to do standup anymore, he'll just leave it alone again...instead of givin us hackery...

in short, good for him...isn't he still one of the bigest box office draws ever or someshit? who else other than Harry Ford has a career like him? sometimes i wonder if that singing shit hadda really jumped off would duke be considered one of best entertainers in history...

yes, for the reason mentioned below, he is.

even after "norbit," (currently 9% at rotten tomatoes http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/norbit/), "meet dave" should come in first that week at the box office. might even break "anchorman"'s july 11th record...

oh wait, "hellboy 2" opens july 11th as well, so maybe not. that's okay. the new batman opens the following week and it'll crush any momentum "meet dave" has. "meet dave" will be out of theaters within a month.

just goes to show how ignorant the movie going public is. "we know it's going to be shit, but we can't help ourselves!"

Eddie Murphy Quashes Retirement Rumors, Talks 'Beverly Hills Cop IV'

'The third 'Beverly Hills Cop' was so horrible!' actor admits, saying he wants to 'get the franchise fixed.'

By Shawn Adler

There are many great reasons to revisit an old character — the obvious one, of course, being a genuine desire to tell another story (and having a good story to tell). But all the reasons in the world pale in comparison to Eddie Murphy's stated reason for doing "Beverly Hills Cop IV."

"Because the third 'Beverly Hills Cop' was horrible!" the once and future Detective Axel Foley laughed. "I didn't want to leave it like that. The first two were cool and the third one was sh---y. get the franchise fixed again, clean up this old mess and do a good movie.

" just leave Axel with his thumb up his a-- from the last movie," the comic continued, chuckling. "Whatever happened to Axel Foley? He's sitting in Detroit with his thumb up his a-- since 'Beverly Hills Cop III.' Let's take those thumbs out and make a great movie!"

(Read more about Murphy's opinion of "BHC III" on the MTV Movies Blog.)

If that last statement surprises you, it might be because you've recently read reports where Murphy said he's considering retirement and didn't want to do another "Beverly Hills Cop" flick. The actor apparently quashed that talk when MTV News caught up with him last weekend — at least not until he once again gets a chance to play the tail-pipe stuffing, motor-mouthed cop from Detroit. (A rep for Murphy confirmed that information to MTV News on Tuesday (July 1), saying, "Eddie is not retiring. 'Beverly Hills Cop IV' is in development.") The actor called Foley his most iconic character ever.

"When I go overseas they still call me Axel Foley — kids call me Axel Foley," Murphy proudly insisted. "I think that character, it resonated like no other movie, like nothing that I've done before."

Or since, the actor could have added, though he has continued, with few exceptions, in making blockbuster after blockbuster — although films like "Dr. Doolittle," "Shrek" and "The Nutty Professor" contain scant traces of the old Murphy, the actor whose profanity-laced routines made him a hero to millions of impressionable young children.

Will "Beverly Hills Cop IV" be a return to that form? Last month, MTV News spoke with director Brett Ratner, who may or may not have indicated that the fourth installment in the action series would be geared towards a younger audience. Could "BHCIV" be PG-13, we wondered?

Murphy seemed on the verge of quashing that notion in no uncertain terms. Although he hasn't yet read a script — and admitted that the franchise could go in any direction, including one that was toned down — Murphy was adamant that what he wanted most of all was for a "real" Foley. And that means a whole lot of swear words.

And you know who you can thank? Seth Rogen.

"I'll tell you what about profanity," Murphy said. "Over the last 20 years or so, because of the studios, everybody figured out there's a PG-13 audience, you know, and that's the biggest piece of the pie. And a bunch of artists, myself included, got put in this PG-13 box — artists that aren't PG-13 artists! Then comedies like 'Superbad,' 'Knocked-Up,' and 'Juno' come out and people go, 'Oh, this is the brilliant sh--.' And it's just people acting like real people, talking like real people. And those movies are making all the money now.

"Get back to the real sh--," he added, regarding what he most wants for Foley. "That's where I started. a real person!"

Murphy can next be seen in "Meet Dave," which opens July 11.

two days later, he came back to Eddie and reported that there are no reviews because the Studio isn't allowing anyone to see Meet Dave before it hits theaters... Eddie went ballistic dropping f-bombs all over the place and called his agent and told him that he was quitting movies and he was going back to standup. His entourage co-signed and they sat over the next day and made elaborate plans for Eddie to do his own HBO special and take the title of funniest man alive back- Johnny Gill chimed in with, 'Pryor and Carlin are dead, Chappelle is in Africa, right (co-signs from the rest of the entourage and Eddie's Mom) and Katt Williams just ain't that funny...the world is waiting for you Eddie!!!' Eddie bought into that shit for another two days before his agent called with the idea of doing BHC IV. The Entourage once again co-signed and said that Eddie could knock Will Smith off of his perch as the king of 4th of July openings (no-homo). So the comedy shit is off for now.

Just keep waiting Nick, after he does 'Trading Places..Again', 'Coming Back To America' and 'Harlem Afternoons', he'll be at the Laugh Factory killin it...

Late pass me if this is common knowledge. But dude recorded "Rub Me the Right Way" and was on New Edition's best album ever, and now he has to hang out with Eddie to get table scraps? That's really foul.

And if he's not part of Eddie's crew, why are they asking Johnny Gill's opinion then? What makes him an authority on the state of stand-up comedy in the U.S.? Personally, I want to know what Chuckii Booker thinks.

Yeah... Apparently, JG is some kind of font of wisdom/svengali for the blackeratti in Hollywood. I think it goes back as least as far as Janet Jackson's divorce from Elizondo, when she cryptically mentioned walking in the desert with this "wise friend" who helped her sort things out -- that was JG, as well.

Even in the moments when we are most dissatisfied, we are living someone's idea of heaven.

Eddie Murphy: I’ll retire from films at 50

He vows to return to stage: ‘30 years and almost 40 pictures is enough’

By Mike Celizic
TODAYShow.com contributor
updated 9:17 a.m. ET, Tues., July. 8, 2008

The clock is running on Eddie Murphy’s extraordinary movie career. And in less than three years, it’s going to run out.

“I am planning to make movies until I am 50,” the 47-year-old star told TODAY’s Al Roker. “That's two years and eight months. Then I am going back to the stage.”

It’s a difficult concept to comprehend. Murphy has been making movies since he was 20 years old. In the nearly 30 years since, he has made nearly 40 films and has established himself as one of the highest-grossing movie stars of all time.

He was a hit from his very first film, “48 Hours” with Nick Nolte, and carried that success on to such hits as “Trading Places,” the “Beverly Hills Cop” franchise, “Coming to America,” “The Nutty Professor” and “Doctor Dolittle.” To kids, he’s the voice of Donkey in the “Shrek” series.

Murphy’s latest film is “Meet Dave,” a summer comedy in which he plays a dual role: a spaceship that looks like a normal person, and the tiny person inside who controls the spaceship. Roker characterized it as “a romantic sci-fi action comedy.”

“That’s it in a nutshell,” Murphy confirmed.

No piece of cake
Murphy, of course, excels as playing multiple characters, a skill he began to develop as a kid in imitation of his acting hero, Peter Sellers. But playing a tiny spaceship captain and the big person who is essentially an empty shell was a challenge, he told Roker.

“Dave is actually a spaceship, and on the surface he looks like a regular person, but there's a crew of little people inside that are controlling his every move,” he explained. “It wasn't a piece of cake. Playing Dave was really hard because there is supposed to be nothing there. So trying to play this character where there is nothing there, and the person is a little bit off and there's somebody inside like controlling his every response — that was kind of difficult.”

“So you've got people in your head — is that based on reality?” Roker joked.

“Oh, no,” Murphy replied. “I just wanted to do something kind of different. I’ve never played a spaceship before.”

The star confirmed that there are still plans to do “Beverly Hills Cop IV," but it’s been difficult to get everything to come together.

“I got in shape and the script didn't come together,” he said. “I was just walking around in shape for nothing. I would love to do that .”

So what would the wisecracking and streetwise Detroit cop Axel Foley be like as a man closing in on 50?

“Axel’s back and he needs a laxative. Axel’s back and he needs a bran muffin,” Murphy joked. “When they first started trying to get a script together, they were thinking, where would Axel be and try to show the back story and all the stuff he's gone through up until now.”

Instead, Murphy suggested, “Let’s just get a really great cop movie.”

Dreams still unfulfilled
When Murphy began his career nearly 30 years ago, he had a list of people he wanted to work with. “Now that list is 25 years old, and I never got to work with one of them,” he confessed.

“Who do you want to work with?” Roker asked.

“I’d love to be on a Steven Spielberg set, Martin Scorsese set. But like I said, when I am 50, I'll be making movies for 30 years. That’s 30 years and almost 40 pictures, that's enough,” he said.

Born in New York, Murphy broke into television when he talked his way onto the “Saturday Night Live” cast in 1980. Within a year, he was a regular member of the cast, creating such characters as a grown-up Buckwheat and “Mr. Robinson,” the inner-city version of “Mr. Rogers.”

He also became wildly popular as a stand-up comedian, producing two X-rated shows, “Eddie Murphy Delirious” and “Eddie Murphy Raw,” which played on cable and were based on the pioneering work of Richard Pryor. Some of the material was so outrageous even he apologized for it years later.

And back to the stage is where Murphy intends to head in two years and eight months when he hits the big five-oh.

“Really?” Roker said, unable to quite believe a man whose movies have grossed more than $3 billion could really give it up. “You could walk away from doing this?”

“Absolutely,” Murphy said, dead serious. “Without question.”

people forget all the great bits eddie has that don't even involve cursing, like when he talks about his family or his AMAZING gift with mimickry (did i spell that right? basically in delirius eddie did dead on impersonations of a wide range of voices, a talent he rarely gets credit for). if he put his brain to it, i think eddie could still pull off a BRILLIANT one hour set. an hour and a half, a la raw, may be pushing it, but i think he has an hour long HBO special in him. his best work (raw, again) involved some collaboration. i would like to see what he could cook up working with his old crew (keenan, robert townsend) and some of the newer cats that impress me (chapelle, katt williams). i'm sure any of them would be honored to brainstorm with eddie.

ps: wasn't eddie saying he would do another stand up film several years ago?

Robin Williams' last HBO special was horrible
Dice's return was pathetic
Roseanne........terrible
Whoopi, bad
Robert Klein......well, I'm not sure he was ever funny anyway

I don't know, I think once you put the standup away for an extended period of time you tend to lose something

Part of the reason Carlin was good for so long was because he never stopped.

Ain't like audiences won't buy it.

Or a least did the ensemble thing where he could bounce off other name stars

Both of those possibilities were shown in Dreamgirls.

But he's preferred to be the leading man guy (read: movie material driven by him being what it's built around), and that time may have passed.

So yeah, if he picked up the microphone again, I'm all for it. He could address a lot and stick it to his critics while winning the people back (not like he was ever a populist kinda dude anyway).
