"what are some of the best series finales?"

im thinking mostly of sitcoms here.

i might get some shit for this, but i remember Roseanne's had me almost crying. that shit was so eerie and surreal.
They are sitting around the table like at the beginning of each show, and Roseanne starts to narrate.
The camera pans around and shows everybody as she tells you that almost half the last season was a dream, and that she had made it all up.

Dan died, you found out that Darlene was actually with Mark, and Becky was with David. And that instead of Rosie's mom, Jackie was actually a lesbian.

When she says that Dan died, and he fades out of the shot.....

man.

maybe its corny. but that shit still gets me when it comes on Nick at Nite.

of course, there are others, and i know there are better ones, but i wanted to hear what PTP has.

it would only be redeemable if after she revealed it was a dream
she cackled that witch laugh of hers
grabbed her crotch

Close your eyes.
Picture it.

Now THAT is how you end a sitcom.

i know its cited as a bad series finale, but i like it.

this is from wikipedia:
"The ninth and final season of the show marks a complete departure from the rest of the series as it takes on a more surreal tone. The Conners win the state lottery jackpot of $108 million, Roseanne battles terrorists, Dan ponders the meaning of life, Jackie meets her prince, D.J. finds love, and Darlene gives birth. Most surreal of all is the season's final episode, in which Roseanne reveals an alternative scenario for the series in which many of its events never actually take place and are instead part of a book she is writing. In this scenario, Dan's heart attack has killed him, the Conner family has not won the lottery, Becky has married David instead of Mark, Darlene has married Mark instead of David, and Jackie has come out as a lesbian instead of Roseanne's mother.

Or, at least, the most believable:

(PRNewsChannel) / Tampa, Fla. - Most fathers believe that of the TV dads present and past Dan Conner, the affable, easygoing guy on "Roseanne" who's openly admired by many of the show's characters for his devotion to his wife and children, offers the most accurate portrayal of fatherhood today, according to a new poll released by InteractiveDad.com and Interactive Dad TV (TM).

Source Web Site: idadtv.com

For that title, Dan Conner beat Cliff Huxstable of the "Cosby Show," who came in second in the poll. Alan Harper on "Two and a Half Men," and Ray Barone of "Everybody Loves Raymond" were tied for third place.

"Dan Conner appears to be dominated by his wife but asserts himself when it comes to his children," says Glenn Selig, creator of Interactive Dad TV, the first syndicated news segment for local TV stations. "I guess there are a lot of dads who see themselves in him."

Both InteractiveDad.com, the free online magazine for dads, and Interactive Dad TV, are geared for today's dads who are more involved with the raising of their children than previous generations.

"Some TV dads are portrayed as bungling fools and totally disengaged," says Selig, "that's troubling and just not fair. Kids watch TV and we certainly don't want our kids to think of fathers that way."

Robbie Stewart, Hannah Montana and Miley Stewart's dad on "Hannah Montana" came in a close fourth.

Way behind were Ward Cleaver on "Leave it to Beaver" and Peter Griffin on "Family Guy."

InteractiveDad.com/Interactive Dad TV Poll Results:
Robbie Stewart "Hannah Montana" (13.21%)
Ray Barone "Everybody Loves Raymond" (18.87%)
Ward Cleaver "Leave it to Beaver" (3.77%)
Alan Harper "Two and a Half Men" (18.87%)
Peter Griffin "Family Guy" (1.89%)
Cliff Huxstable "Cosby Show"(20.75%)
Dan Conner "Roseanne" (22.64%)

obviously, Cliff Huxtable would be up there, too, but he seems TOO good.

Dan, on the other hand, had his flaws, but was obviously very dedicated to his wife and family.

Sitcom finales are almost impossible to pull off because suddenly they have to pretend that there was some sort of grand narrative.
Sanders was in a unique position compared to most sitcoms and it works perfectly. Arrested Development did the same thing, but under the gun.

Buffy and Angel had great finales too.

>Sitcom finales are almost impossible to pull off because
>suddenly they have to pretend that there was some sort of
>grand narrative.

which is why even the best sitcoms have bad finales. they have to either completely depart from the vibe of the show by coming up with some story arc that was never really there, or they have to be true to the series and end up having an anti-climatic ending. also, they have to choose whether to try to please the loyal fanbase who has been watching the show all along, or to please the majority of people watching the finale that haven't been following every episode (or watching at all in some cases.)

seinfeld had a chance to get it right, but they blew it. i knew they would go to the sitcom within a sitcom story arc, because that was really the only continuous narrative jerry had in the show, and it was left unresolved. they could have done something like worked on the first real episode which had the same plot as an early seinfeld episode, or they could have had george eff everything up for the series like he almost did with the negotiations the first time through. but that entire court case plot with the minor characters coming back to testify with them ending up in jail was completely over the top and out of character for the show.

Yeah, it was hella rushed.

But on paper, it was solid. It had it's moments (my favorite was how they closed the Lindsey storyline), and it left everyone fighting the good fight. It wasn't completely closed, but there was a sense of closure. The show was still at the top of it's game when it ended also, so i think that helped.

Buffy, imho by that time, was already falling off. Plus, they faced the end of the world/hell coming over that the basic premise of the end seemed kind of a rehash, and we won't touch the slayer school into'world of a thousand slayers!' aspect.

I think I'm still just bitter about the cancellation. I do like how they ended with Angel Investigations getting down to what they do, and to rephrase, I feel like the buildup to that situation was rushed. It felt like they tagged that bit with Cordy giving him the vision on as an afterthought.

IMO, the Circle of the Black Thorn should've been a Season 6 storyline, and THEN, I'd accept "Not Fade Away" as is.

Perfect ending for a great show. I liked how they avoided the cliche of Kevin and Winnie living happily ever after.

i remember being really confused when they reveal that winnie and kevin don't end up together, and it would have been nice if they did (but that's just the old romantic in me).

it was great though. the bit where he talks to his son at the end. nice.

Will probably hold the top spot for a long while if just for the last 10 minutes.

The Wire finale was pretty great also. And also The Sopranos to a lesser extent for me because I was never as big a fan of the show.

I didn't mean for this to turn into the HBO post... but those are some of the most recent ones that come to mind.

there was some point in the beginning when i considered not watching the show (due to the fact I didn't understand why it was good yet) and the finale wrapped it up so nicely...

that was an amazing show

There are some plot points I don't think would have been done had this been season 6, but it feels official, not like fan-fic, for the most part.

Back to the point of the thread, the finale was perfect. I keep it on my DVR and watch it from time to time.

With them dancing.

Tea Leoni's failed (on two different networks) show The Naked Truth had a memorable one. It ended with the entire cast crashing in a hot air balloon and waiting for death stranded on the side of a mountain. The final shot was of them all singing that "I want to go home" vacation song.

This was my favorite one until Angel's. The editing was insane, but what put it over the top was Picard showing up at their poker game. Until it was mentioned I didn't even noticed that he never participated in it.

We were left off in such an interesting place, and every character had grown so much... to be denied seeing what happened to them is so sad.

But because we see the growth and the changes wrapped up so wonderfully, it's really as close to a perfect series finale as I've ever seen.

Late passes are okay. It's definitely better late than never.

I am a pure and simple Apatow fanboy. I love pretty much everything he does and I totally tune out any criticism of him.

Nothing he did before, nothing he's done since and nothing he will ever do will ever touch Freaks and Geeks. For me, it's my second greatest show of all-time behind The Wire.

It's funny, touching, real and painful. It's exactly what every high school show should strive to be.
