haven't seen it in a looooong time, but I do remember liking all of the bits in it about how much fun it is to actually create... yeah, "but the love story was corny," blah blah blah, but I do remember liking the bits that dealt with the business and joy of creating...

But only for one reason.
The ending to Saving Private Ryan was corny as hell.
Really corny.
As in, so corny it almost ruined the first near-flawless 2 1/2+ hours prior.
That's definitely ignoring the sometimes glaring issues with the portrayal of the Germans. You know, how it's trying to show the ugly brutality of war, and how it's war that's bad but the people fighting it are usually just scared pawns...and yet you almost never even see the Germans, and the one you see the most of turns out to be a worm.
I mean I guess Spielberg had to walk gracefully to keep from sympathizing with the Germans, but still, it would have been cooler to show that the German soldiers were just as much victims of an awful war as the American ones. Just my opinion.
Oh yeah, I wish they had at least one black guy in there. And Vin does NOT count.
Whereas Shakespeare in Love was just a playful tale, creating characters and a tone right from the plays. Outside of the fact that Joseph Fiennes overdid it in a few scenes, there wasn't a head-shaking moment there.

I dunno if they were all "just as much" victims... but to a degree, yeah. but Spielberg would never do that, and can't really say I blame him. but yeah the one humanized German turning out to be a worm was a little much.

I mean victims in the sense that I'm sure plenty of them didn't have anything against the jews, plenty didn't follow politics in general, plenty joined either cause they had to or didn't know what else to do with themselves. Like you, I can't blame Spielberg for even trying to show that. But for a movie that was trying to show the evils of war but the good in man and overall value of life...the Germans were mostly invisible and evil. I would even have been alright if that one German we got to see was just scared out of his mind, and not a worm.

And the single thing that makes that movie realistic is that it recreated the actual mood and grit of the war and did it as as good or better than any film ever made.
So miss me with that "he shoulda showed the other side bullshit."
Ain't no humanity in war. Point of the point was that was IS hell...Speeeel even said it in the DVD extra.
And seriously - at some point you gotta be a grown man and understand that all humans are effected by atrocity...of course the Germans were manipulated... ...don't mean I wouldn't been bucking them down with the quickness and tryna put some bullets in some throats my damn self.

When he gets the last letter, it's pretty brutal.
The funny thing about the film was that as it was originally scripted, Adrian Brody was the main character. He thought it was his big breakthrough film and then was pissed when he sat through the premiere and found that he was barely in the movie.

Most of the new names involved in these films are already in need of a comeback. Vin Diesel, Ben Affleck, Gwyneth Paltrow came and went. Joe Fiennes never became much of anything. John Madden's follow-ups were Captain Correlli's Mandolin and Proof. His latest, Killshot, is getting only a limited release. None of the writers have matched their success. Robert Rodat hasn't had a credit since The Patriot.
I loved The Thin Red Line but I think I'd have to go with Saving Private Ryan as best picture.

movies. I remember I saw A Thin Red Line and Saving Private Ryan in a double feature. They showed ATRL first, which was also very good and well shot but put most people in the theater I was in to sleep. Next came Saving Private Ryan which woke everyone up.
