"Basa's Tyler Perry theory at work YET AGAIN"

http://canadianpress.google.com/article/ALeqM5g0Unzp0I0PHEAasHGDg4Uh3ELO7Q

Garcia cast Underwood as Alex after seeing him in the feature film "Madea's Family Reunion."

"I'd watched Blair for a long time on television - on everything from 'L.A. Law' to 'Sex and the City' - and he'd largely played likable characters," Garcia said. "But in 'Madea's Family Reunion,' Blair played an angry, dangerous, abusive character. He really was very frightening."

so, B-dogg got his best part in YEARS because of the OPPORTUNITY TP gave him to display his vast range as an actor? white folks saw him and wanted him for the hot new show? is THAT how the BUSINESS works?

People stay fronting like actors are can't become good after some mediocre work. Even Denzel been in some wack movies (Hello Virtuosity).

I still say TP has one good film in him to make. If he wasn't so complacent in pleasing just his typical audience, he could actually branch out where a lot of other black directors can't go. As long as he continues to make money, he'll have another shot.

Especially when dude wasn't exactly unemployed before.

Especially when no one else in the cast as done anything of note since that movie. The only guy in the cast who worked steadily before TP continues to work steadily after TP.

Especially when "In Treatment" is precisely the kind of work you piss on when the latte-sippers like it.

And then scroll down to the section
titled:

STARRING ROLES

She hasn't STARRED in a major Hollywood
movie in a LONG time.

Perry has STARRING in her a LIGHT, funny, but
meaningful movie coming out soon that is BIG
enough that it was advertised during 'Raisin in
the Sun'. Doesn't mean its a world beater, but there
were multiple 1 minute + commercials, and it is ABC
and not cable. That took money. Perry got that, or
the studio wouldn't have paid for that.

And even better: That is the type of light movies
that black women her age NEVER get casted for.

EVER.

Perry got her STARRING.

So no, you're absolutely, 100% WRONG.

Perry is breathing life into lots of careers.

The theory presented in this thread is that people are getting other work based on being in a Tyler Perry movie. Blair got "In Treatment" based on being in "Madeas Family Reunion."

You can't say count Angela Bassett getting work in Tyler Perry's movie based on Angela Bassett being in Tyler Perry's movie.

Never mind you getting jazzed because you saw a commercial for a black movie while watching a black movie. Like that's some shock. When else are they gonna air those commercials?

It's like seeing billboards for Hennessy and Cadillacs in the hood.

I mean, you could have just disagreed and been wrong.

I would have happily corrected you, and it'd
be all good.

Then you have to proceed with the PTP assholery, for
no reason.

That makes you wrong, and a wack motherfucker.

Lol.

>The theory presented in this thread is that people are
>getting other work based on being in a Tyler Perry movie.
>Blair got "In Treatment" based on being in "Madeas Family
>Reunion."

No, the "theory" goes back to dozens of other posts
about Tyler Perry authored by
Basaglia.

Basaglia consistently argues that Perry is, if anything,
a positive force for black actors, actresses, and
black america at large.

Basaglia highlighted this note because its a very specific
example of how someone used a Perry-directed film to note the
range that a respected, but neglected, actor had, using said
performance to give said actor a prominent role.

Again, that is a very specific example of the grander
point that Basaglia constantly makes:

Tyler Perry is not a "coon," and is not "setting Black
America back," and is not "making black people look bad."

He's, in fact, furthering the careers of black actors
and actresses.

In which case my Angela Bassett example works perfectly.

In which case you are wrong.

Next.

>You can't say count Angela Bassett getting work in Tyler

>movie.
>
>Never mind you getting jazzed because you saw a commercial for
>a black movie while watching a black movie. Like that's some
>shock. When else are they gonna air those commercials?

Actually, its very expensive to pay for a commercial on ABC,
even during black programming, in which case you're still a
dumbass, because the only reason I pointed out the commercial
was to reinforce my other point that the Perry movie starring
Angela Bassett was a major studio movie, which it is.

If it wasn't, the studio wouldn't be paying for ABC
commercials.

But according to your other (shot down)argument, that
all should be irrelevant, because my (correct)Angela
Bassett example was supposed to be wrong.

In which case I'm curious as to why you pressed the
commercial point at all.

You've only made yourself look doubly stupid, by being
both wrong about the Bassett example, and wrong about
why I highlighted the presence of the commercial on ABC
on a Monday night primetime movie.

Next.

>It's like seeing billboards for Hennessy and Cadillacs in the
>hood.

Lol.

Nice analogy, moron.

Except that Hennessey and Cadillacs are not
black-authored entertainment venues, neither of them black
owned, and their advertisement in poor inner-cities is
largely indicative of spending problems and bad habits
in the black community.

So here: Not only are you wrong about the correct
argument, you're wrong about the wrong argument.

The Tyler Perry movie is an uplifting movie about
overcoming obstacles, and so even IF only poor blacks watched
'A Raisin in the Sun', than you'd be a dick for comparing
fun, light, comedy movies to addictive substances and
expensive cars.

But that fantasy scenario(where you would be wrong) is
not the case.

Because advertising to poor blacks in the "hood" is not
exactly what went on with the Tyler Perry movie
advertised during 'A Raisin in the Sun'.

For example, I(OE) saw 'Raisin in the Sun' with a bunch
of ivy educated people, not all black, some with MFAs,
all of whom saw the actual performance on Broadway, where
tickets were priced far out of the range of most
people(of all races) in any "hood."

So actually, the markets are completely different,
you fucking dickhead.

We watched 'Raisin in the Sun' while eating healthy
salad, not Fried Chicken.

I'm a part of the market, just like Jamal from the
"hood" is.

Dumb, but better.

I'm familiar with the theory. I disagree.

>Basaglia consistently argues that Perry is, if anything,

Yeah, I get that. I asked for examples of this at play. One guy who already gets work getting another job is a weak example.

Simply hiring Angela Bassett for one of his movies means squat.

>Basaglia highlighted this note because its a very specific
>example of how someone used a Perry-directed film to note the

Yes, one example. Forgetting for a moment that Blair Underwood works steadily and is hardly "neglected," you need more than one example to make the case for this "theory."

>
>Again, that is a very specific example of the grander
>point that Basaglia constantly makes:
>
>Tyler Perry is not a "coon," and is not "setting Black

I never said he was a coon. I said he was a terrible filmmaker.

>In which case my Angela Bassett example works perfectly.
>

I'm waiting for you to explain how her getting this one job "furthers" her career. Besides just getting her another paycheck.

I understand how someone might think Blair Underwood's career was furthered by being in a TP movie. But until we see what happens to Angela's career AFTER this movie, you can't say her career has been furthered. All she did was get another job. Some might say this is a step backwards for her career. That might be going to far.

Hold on. THAT'S your point?

L.

Since when is Lionsgate a major studio? It's no rinky dink operation, but come on.

But disregarding that for a moment, are you really going to make the case that this movie is a big deal because they have commercials on TV? Lesser movies have commercials on TV too. I've seen commercials for movies playing in two cities.

Wow. We all know TP movies make money. It has long since been established that Lionsgate is making big money off his movies. What does having a commercial on TV mean? Is this the first TP commercial you've seen?

Seriously. They have a commercial, must be a "real" movie. Lame.

>In which case I'm curious as to why you pressed the
>commercial point at all.

Because having a commercial for a movie is no big deal. The fact that they advertise a black movie during a black movie is really not worth mentioning. I was curious why you mentioned it all. Now I realize it's because you're idiot.

>

>
>Except that Hennessey and Cadillacs are not

Who made it is irrelevant. My point was about who you expect to buy it. If you're selling stuff black people buy, you advertise where the black people are.

Then there is also the point that, just like Hennessy and Cadillacs, people buying Tyler Perry movies is indicative of bad habits in the black community.

That bad habit is supporting movies of inferior quality.

Geez. You act like white people don't see cognac and malt liquor ads. But how many of them buy?

Ask your non-black, Ivy educated friends how many of them plan to see MEET THE BROWNS.

Not so fast, sparky.

>Yeah, I get that. I asked for examples of this at play. One
>guy who already gets work getting another job is a weak

Nice way to misinterpret the Underwood hiring.

Its a career role, actually, and perhaps his most
high profile job ever.

So no, its actually a very good example.

>Simply hiring Angela Bassett for one of his movies means
>squat.

Again - there you go with the oversimplification:

How about hiring Bassett in her highest profile
role in years?

He didn't "hire" her to be a goddamn extra.

>Yes, one example. Forgetting for a moment that Blair Underwood
>works steadily and is hardly "neglected," you need more than
>one example to make the case for this "theory."

Oh, I see: So are you suggesting that his latest role
is not a major high profile role that dwarfs pretty
much every single role he's had in the last decade?

If not, than please, shut the fuck up.

This is a major, major, coup for Underwood, as
by mere number of viewers, he's going to be seen
by more viewers than at any other point in his
career...add in the fact that he has a prominent
role, and not a secondary role, and Basaglia's point
is 100% correct.

>I never said he was a coon. I said he was a terrible
>filmmaker.

Good for you. I think Tarantino is a terrible
filmmaker. I'm also smart enough to know that he's
singlehandedly responsible for Travolta's resurrection,
and for the rise of Uma Thurman.

>I'm waiting for you to explain how her getting this one job
>"furthers" her career. Besides just getting her another
>paycheck.

If you don't see how her getting a high profile starring
role, in a major hollywood movie is good for her career,
than you're just inventing reasons to hate.

Bassett wasn't getting major starring roles AT ALL. Perry
gave an actress an opportunity to act on a grand stage.

That's good for her.

Not sure what you're confused about.

>I understand how someone might think Blair Underwood's career
>was furthered by being in a TP movie. But until we see what
>happens to Angela's career AFTER this movie, you can't say her
>career has been furthered. All she did was get another job.
>Some might say this is a step backwards for her career. That
>might be going to far.

Again - you're trying to argue a very specific point, that
isn't relevant. We all know that Angela Bassett is a great
actress. Even white people know that. Problem is, NO ONE
WAS CASTING HER FOR ANY LEADING ROLES in any respectable,
major hollywood films.

Perry casted her in a leading role in a respectable, major
hollywood film.

>Since when is Lionsgate a major studio? It's no rinky dink
>operation, but come on.

Oh, so its not expensive to pay for a commercial
on ABC? And is the film a major film, or not?

Answer the motherfucking questions.

>But disregarding that for a moment, are you really going to
>make the case that this movie is a big deal because they have
>commercials on TV? Lesser movies have commercials on TV too.
>I've seen commercials for movies playing in two cities.

Okay, but is this movie only playing in two cities?

Or is it going for nationwide release?

Oh, its a nationwide release movie with a fairly
notable cast?

So, why are you mentioning that small movies released in
two cities have commercials on TV?

What does that have to do with Perry's latest film?

Nothing?

Just like I thought.

>Wow. We all know TP movies make money. It has long since been
>established that Lionsgate is making big money off his movies.
>What does having a commercial on TV mean? Is this the first TP
>commercial you've seen?

No, dumbass, its evidence that this is Bassett's highest
profile leading role in a long, long, long, long,
long, time.

>Seriously. They have a commercial, must be a "real" movie.
>Lame.

Lol. Yeah. That's what I said.

Idiot.

You're getting desperate.

>Because having a commercial for a movie is no big deal. The
>fact that they advertise a black movie during a black movie is
>really not worth mentioning. I was curious why you mentioned
>it all. Now I realize it's because you're idiot.

Uh, no.

Its further evidence that this movie is a major studio
movie, which it is. That is what is so great about this
discussion -- at the end of the day, you haven't debated
the actual point:

This movie is a major hollywood movie, with nationwide
release.

And that is how they can afford to pay for
a fairly robust publicity campaign.

>Who made it is irrelevant. My point was about who you expect
>to buy it. If you're selling stuff black people buy, you
>advertise where the black people are.

Right, but that is a bad analogy, since a different
type of black person watched 'A Raisin in the Sun'
than the type of people you find in the "hood"
giddy to buy some Hennessey or buy a Cadillac
that they can't afford.

>Then there is also the point that, just like Hennessy and
>Cadillacs, people buying Tyler Perry movies is indicative of
>bad habits in the black community.

Oh jesus.

>That bad habit is supporting movies of inferior quality.

Right, like white people supporting Tarantino.

His most recent film was far worse than Perry's most
recent film, and fans of his have told me that. Didn't
stop them from buying the DVD.

How about white people and their bad habits?

I mean, we can have this debate if you want.

>Geez. You act like white people don't see cognac and malt
>liquor ads. But how many of them buy?

Actually, quite a few do.

But I'm black, and I buy neither.

Not sure what the fuck your point is.

>Ask your non-black, Ivy educated friends how many of them plan
>to see MEET THE BROWNS.

Actually, I saw the last Perry film with an educated
Latina, who absolutely loved it.

So I'm not sure what the fuck you're talking about.

Dude, this is all pure comedy.

Okay, Blair Underwood got a good role. He works steadily, but maybe this is better than the whatever love interest role he last had. My point isn't that this isn't a good role, is that he wasn't struggling for work, and his work is respected, so his career didn't need saving by Tyler Perry. It's nice that he got a good role, but there is no "big picture" meaning to it.

Give me another example of someone else's career being furthered after being in a Tyler Perry movie, otherwise you are just spewing hot air.

Why in the hell are you hellbent on convincing me MEET THE BROWNS is a big movie? No one said it wasn't. Your convoluted mess about seeing a commercial for it only undercut your whole point by making you seem like you don't know what the fuck you're talking about. Lots of movies, big or small, have commercials. It's irrelevant. Move on.

But Angela Bassett being in this movie does not mean her career is suddenly going to take off again. And if that's not your suggestion, why the John Travolta analogy?

Hey, maybe Angela will be hot after this, just like Travolta was after Pulp Fiction. I hope so, that would be nice. But we have no way of knowing that right now. Which is why it sucks as an example.

Lol.

Who the fuck said anything about "saved?"

Dumbass.

No one said Tyler Perry gave acting roles to Rwandan
orphans or rebuilt post-Taylor Liberia.

We said his work is actually giving opps to deserving
actors and actresses that were getting NO ROLES at all,
doing so in films, again, which are fairly successful.

>Give me another example of someone else's career being

Motherfucka, ACKNOWLEDGE THE ACTUAL POINT THAT
BASAGLIA HAS MADE.

Don't go off and create your own dumbass argument.

Let's rehash the ENTIRE Tyler Perry argument put
forth by Basaglia et al(the ones you are here for, and the
ones you weren't here for):

-Tyler Perry is NOT a "coon"

-Tyler Perry is NOT "bad for Black America"

-Tyler Perry is NOT an "idiot"

-Tyler Perry is, if ANYTHING, GOOD for black hollywood,
in large part because he gives work to respected actors
and actresses, giving PROMINENT roles in MAJOR HOLLYWOOD
MOVIES, something these actors and actresses were NOT
GETTING WITHOUT TYLER PERRY.

Basaglia correctly highlighted this Underwood situation
as a SPECIFIC EXAMPLE of the LAST POINT.

Basaglia is right.

You are a dumbfuck, and wrong.

>Why in the hell are you hellbent on convincing me MEET THE

Okay!

Good!

So how many movies had commercials during 'A Raisin in the
Sun', on ABC during primetime?

I know about a dozen black independent filmmakers with
completed "small films." None had commercials between
8pm and 11pm this past Monday because, unlike Taylor Perry,
few people care about their movies.

Perry, on the other hand, is casting Angela Bassett in a
leading role in a movie that people DO care about.

I mean, wow. See how simple that was?

Lol.

>But Angela Bassett being in this movie does not mean her
>career is suddenly going to take off again. And if that's not
>your suggestion, why the John Travolta analogy?

Lol.

Angela Bassett is a black woman in her 40s.

Nothing can make her "take off" in Hollywood. The best
we can hope for is that.....

.....someone casts her in a leading role, so at the very
least, she can get to show her ability, which dwarfs
99.99999% of white actresses her age.

>Hey, maybe Angela will be hot after this, just like Travolta
>was after Pulp Fiction. I hope so, that would be nice. But we
>have no way of knowing that right now. Which is why it sucks
>as an example.

See above.

You keep putting them up, I'll keep knocking
them down.

after being forced to strike out against two white dudes not in his weight class. I could kinda understand that guy in "Something New" but Steve in Sex in the City? I guess he wouldn't want to be caught with that crow-faced Cynthia Nixon-

but c'mon. Blair is like fifty times the man.

Aside from the Madea you have:

Asunder
G
Something New
And now In-Treatment

I don't have a particular argument one way or the other about TP being a career revivalist, but Garcia had a lot to choose from to see Blair's dark side.
