"Over/Under: Jessica Alba's career lasting 5 more years?"
Mon Feb-18-08 11:25 AM by ChanEpic

I mean I don't think I can think of another actress with her potential choosing the roles that she chooses..

Her agent and manager need to be fired because "Good Luck Chuck" and "The Eye" are NOT STAR VEHICLES... I will hold them all responsible for the Ally Sheedy-ing of Alba.. I guess Alba herself isn't smart enough to see that she is ruining herself.. I give her 2 more years of crap like this.. AKA, the under..

I mean, Heather Graham still has a career, but she fell the fuck off. Alba will always be able to land roles, but I could see her not getting starring roles in big-budget, mainstream Hollywood films in less than five years.

And Heather Graham was the star of her own series in 2006 (which got canned because the show runner dropped the ball) and is slated for 3 movies in 2008 and already has one scheduled for 2009. 99.9% of actresses would kill a homeless man with their bare hands to have her career.

HG does a fair amount of straigh-to-dvd schlock. She is a reasonably successful working actor but nowhere near the level some people thought she would be at.

agreed but... As bad as "The Eye"? Or as bad as "Awake"?
If there is one thing that I have noticed it is, that there are plenty of young ladies who are just as beautiful as Jessica. What made her stand out was that she was in great movies/tv shows and THAT is how she got where she is today.. If she doesn't get better agents, she is toast..

It's not like she was going to play "Juno". How many other quality lead roles for women are out there? Signing on for a Cruise/Wagner remake of a popular Japanese film was probably one of their better prospects.

She's in Mike Myers' "The Love Guru" so that could help her sneak into better rom-coms but honestly, being an actress is almost more about luck than having a good agent.

Not that she was totally nude but she showed me a little something in Good Luck chuck and that didn't do anything for her career.. I would still like for her to try the naked route but I don't think even that can help her, and it could hurt her, 'memba "Show Girls"?

Elizabeth Berkley wasn't doing anything before Showgirls. It was all Saved By the Bell and other TV shows. She was in The First Wives Club and Any Given Sunday after that. Granted, she just isn't a good actress so she couldn't really build off that but it's not like that film hurt her career.

Jessica Alba wants to be known as a serious actress but she thinks that means getting better roles as opposed to, you know, actually becoming a good actress.

Not at the time. Eventually it did put Berkley back on the map but that was years later, and look where she is now..

She made First Wives Club directly after Showgirls. Any Given Sunday came a couple years after that. As I said, she didn't do anything with those opportunities but if she hadn't done Showgirls she would have been as forgotten as Lark Voorhies.

Possibly. Now I would never consider arguing the acting talents of the Saved by the Bell cast but in this case it speaks to my original thought about Alba. Being able to act is just a part of a good career. Having agents and mgmt that can get the job done is another. Possibly Lark did not have the backing that Berkley did and THAT could explain some of why she is a forgotten entity. Its obvious Berkley was on her grissly as Alba is but Alba needs to get better advice on role selection..

Look at the films the last couple of years and which ones should she have taken? It's not like she was going to get cast in Enchanted or Atonement.

Most young actresses take on some BS roles just to keep working. Even someone like Sandra Bullock has to take BS like Premonition.

call me crazy but, I refuse to believe that the scripts Alba gets are only of the "The Eye" and "Good Luck Chuck" ilk.. I don't know EXACTLY what roles or scripts she's been offered but of the ones she chooses, the almost all suck and suck bad...

So either Alba, an almost A-list starlette, is only offered Fantastic Four and the like, or she is offered alot of roles and decides to do the horrible ones.. Either way her agent and manager are not doing right by her. Especially if she is as dumb as her role selection hints. It would behoove her people to advise her better, if only to keep their pockets fat..

Name the great roles that Jessica Alba might have passed up. The legit female roles are few and far between and I doubt she gets even second crack at most of them (and any that require real acting probably are never really given to her).

Jessica Biel has been in some shit movies of late as well. She just takes supporting roles in shit as opposed to being the lead.

If you name an actress who has a consistent filmography, she probably doesn't work that often.

Known for her looks as much as her talent. Has done some cheesy big budget stuff (Stealth, Blade: Trinity, Texas Chainsaw Massacre). But she manages to show up in some indie flicks that, if not great, at least are not blatantly commercial drivel.

Someone might argue, but I don't see a significant difference in acting skills between the two. Biel might have some items on her resume that allowed her to show more range than the stuff on Alba's resume. But I don't doubt that Alba could have been in pretty much everything on Biel's list. (The only real difference is probably that Biel's voice is a little lower, which keeps her from sounding like an airhead. Alba's voice is a little high, which frankly doesn't help her.)

I don't pretend to know why either Jessica chose they movies they chose, or what parts they were offered. But I do know that everyone in hollywood gets put into a box based on their most recent work, and you have to actively fight for a "different" project or something that will change how people see you.

that's a watchable hungover Sunday cable movie for me. Some tropical environs, a little bit of action, Alba in a bikini, Scott Caan being a very believable scumbag friend.......it's not a great movie by any stretch but I can sit through it and have on more than one occaision.

As for Alba, she's been a Top 5 fixture for a few years.......I'm not really sure she's much of an actress but then again I haven't watched many of her movies because they've looked so bad.

I have a feeling she's gonna go out like Meg Ryan, finally agreeing to do nude scenes long after people stopped caring in a bad arthouse film.

But while Alba is definitely hotter than Meg Ryan ever was, she's got a long way to go in terms of developing a niche as an actress or building a resume of decent movies.

then again, that was with a woman and Alba doesn't resonate with the female population probably because she's legitimately hot instead of 'cute' like Reese Witherspoon.

No but look at the films leading up to Swordfish and those that came after swordfish. Of course Cat Woman was not a good look but Monster's Ball? The Xmen movies etc... At least her people or Halle had the since to throw in a Monster's Ball.. Whereas Alba has Sin City, in which she isn't necessarily the lead...

Maybe it's not Maybaliene, but she's on some make-up commercial where she looks ridiculously good.

she's forever in those supermarket rags.

She's in peoples' eyes, and let's face it, she's fine. That fine isn't going away anytime soon. She might've gotten skinny, but her face is still level 20 + beautiful.

Lohan hasn't been in a decent movie since "The Parent Trap" remake, and she's still stuffing coke up her nose.

Trust, Alba is JUST fine.

so.. You've got the over...

How many terrible movies can she make and still get the endorsements?

I liken her to Ally Sheedy. She had the world at her feet and then, Short Circuit, Maid to order and whatever else got in the way..
There is only so much of the B and C movie roles that people can tke no matter how beautiful, and I agree she is GRADE A beautiful, you are.

To be honest, I think she took these b.s. movies to help float.

"Good Luck Chuck" was prob a good pick on paper, 'cause Dane Cook was THEE talked-about dude when that dropped...it wasn't really her fault the movie sucked badly.

Her agent was probably like "This Dane Cook guy is a bomb ready to go off...you better jump on this flick with him, 'cause he's the next Jim Carey".

I agree wholeheartedly that diet, lame, caffeine-free "thrillers" are quicksand for the career ("The Eye"), but I wouldn't place Ms Alba in the Ms. Berry et...who seems to actually LIKE taking fucked roles.

People who allow Larry the Cable Guy to continue to make films and be a successful stand up comedian. People who eat McDonalds and shop at Wal-Mart and think Olive Garden is decent italian food.

Yeah I am hating.. What are you going to do about it?

Seriously, if you are comparing Jessica Alba's prospects as an actress to Larry the Cable guy, then you are missing the point.

Secondly, your argument would hold some water if the movies Alba is in(and is the lead), wouldn't tank at the box office.. Have you checked the box office on "The Eye" or "Awake"? These should be mainstream big money making films.. But when you read their plots, you think, what idiot(or non Japanese) would think a movie about haunted corneas would be anything other than hot garbation?

Besides Fantastic Four and Sin City (two ensemble films), her movies don't do very well.

The Eye - 27 million
Awake - 14 million
Good Luck Chuck - 35 million
Into the Blue - 18 million
Honey - 30 million

She's hardly making a name for herself as a bankable actress.
