Name: Arnus (alien name), Augustus Freeman IV (Earth name)

Powers/Abilities: Flight, invulnerability, superhuman strength. He is also able to project positron based blasts from his hands

In 1839 an alien spaceship crash-landed in the American South. Its inhabitant took on the appearance of one of the locals in an attempt to blend in, which unfortunately resulted in his enslavement, as the form he chose was that of a black man. By the modern day he had taken on the identity of Augustus Freeman IV, a wealthy, conservative, lawyer. But one night his house was broken into, and he used his powers for the first time in decades, an action which was witnessed by Raquel Ervin. The idealistic youth convinced him to become the superhero Icon, Hero of Dakota, with Raquel as his sidekick, Rocket.

I remember reading something from Dwayne McDuffie that said that he originally pitched a black, armored scientist character to DC, and was completely shot down. He turns the pitch into Hardware from his Milestone line and suddenly DC comes out with John Henry Irons.

Leader of the African nation of Wakanda, T'challa succeeds his father T'Chaka as the "Black Panther"; the title given to the chief of the Panther Tribe. When T'Challa was a teenager, T'Chaka was murdered by Ulysses Klaw, a Dutchman seeking to plunder the rare Vibranium metal unique to Wakanda. T'Challa used Klaw's own weapon to maim him and drive him off. T'Challa studied in Europe and America, then underwent ritual trials in Wakanda to win the heart-shaped herb. From that day forward, King T'Challa dedicated his life to maintaining the safety and welfare of the Wakandan state, often at the cost of is own personal life and relationships.

To justify what? a top tier writer? I'm not sure. I don't think he's a character who's going to consistently break 50k in this day and age.

Besides, Christopher Priest was hands down the best writer to ever go near T'Challa and he's never been considered top tier no matter how good his writing is.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyborg_%28comics%29

Cyborg (Victor Stone) is a fictional DC Comics superhero best known as a member of the Teen Titans. Created by writer Marv Wolfman and artist George Pérez, he first appeared in DC Comics Presents #26 (October 1980).

The son of well-meaning but thoughtless scientists who tried to use him in their experiments to artificially enhance human intelligence, Victor was a troubled youth. When one of his parents’ experiments brought an extra-dimensional monster to Earth, Victor was horribly maimed. His father used advanced prosthetics to rebuild his son, but at a cost of being disfigured by them.

Half-man, half machine, Cyborg used his mechanical enhancements as a superhero. The Teen Titans acted as a surrogate family, helping him recover his self-esteem and retain his inner humanity. He is a mentor of the current Titans.

Cyborg is my favorite black super hero, hands down.

Cyborg was lucky enough to be a part of an incredibly popular run of the New Teen Titams in the 80s. However, he had the misfortune of not being a part of an existing legacy. Robin/Nightwing had Batman, Wonder Girl had Wonder Woman, Kid Flash had the Flash and even Changling had the Doom Patrol. Because of this, he has never had a role in the DCU outside of being a Titan.

So, he's been firmly established as "the glue." He's the one everyone rallies around when the band has to get back together. He's the one reminding the others that the Titans aren't just a team, they're a family. Sure, this is somewhat true because they literally grew up together but it's also because Cyborg has no close relationships with ANYONE else in the DCU.

I was disappointed when Arsenal/Red Arrow got the nod for the JLA (Batman was even lobbying for him!). If anyone deserved to graduate to the big leagues, it was Cyborg. As happy as I am that the Titans are getting back together, I'm really hoping that Victor Stone can get an identity beyond just being a Titan.

Peace,

*** MARBLES ***

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Stewart_(comics)

Name: John Stewart

Powers & Abilities: Green Lantern power ring that can create green 'solid-light' constructs, flight, space travel, and other powers. Stewart's personality affects his ring's creations, giving them a solid, architectural quality.

Architect John Stewart was the third candidate for Green Lantern of space sector 2814, but the second to wear the uniform. After Hal Jordan became Green Lantern, the Guardians of the Universe mandated that there should always be an alternate. This alternate was in fact Guy Gardner. But when the time came, Guy was injured and it was left to Hal to train John instead. Unlike Hal, John preferred not to wear a mask. Stewart is a recurring character in the Green Lantern mythos, usually serving as Earth’s most prominent Green Lantern during the times when other notable Earth Green Lanterns, such as Hal Jordan or Kyle Rayner are absent, on leave, or retired.

John Stewart in "Justice League" & "Justice League Unlimited" was a member of the United States Marine Corps. Stewart’s eyes glow green as a side effect of his fifteen years of exposure to the power ring’s radiation

17. "Mr. Terrific aka The Third Smartest Man In The World"
In response to Reply # 0

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mister_Terrific_(Michael_Holt)

Fictional character history

At a young age, Michael Holt showed remarkable intelligence, reading and assimilating the works of Bohr, Einstein, Planck, and Feynman, the pantheon of theoretical physics, at the age of six. He studied advanced science, space, and time "while other children struggled through Sesame Street". Michael grew up with his mentally challenged older brother, Jeffrey, whom Michael loved dearly. When Jeffrey died at the age of 15, Michael was devastated.

Holt displayed "a natural aptitude for having natural aptitudes", as he called it, easily picking up and retaining complex skills and abilities that other men spent their entire lives perfecting. Before he began his career as a superhero, he already possessed 14 Ph.D's (two in Engineering and Physics -- including doctorates and masters degrees in Law, Psychology, Chemistry, Political science, and Mathematics)., was a self-made multi-millionaire with a high tech firm called Cyberwear (subsequently sold to Waynetech) and was a Gold medal winning Olympic decathelete.

The accidental deaths of his wife and unborn child were a devastating blow to Holt and while contemplating suicide, he was met by the Spectre, who told him about Terry Sloane, the Golden Age superhero known as Mister Terrific. Inspired by Sloane's life story, he took the name Mister Terrific and later joined the current Justice Society of America, eventually serving as its chairman.

He initially wore ordinary clothes and a leather jacket with Sloane's "Fair Play" emblem on the back. He currently wears a T-shaped mask composed of electronic nanites, a black and white costume with red trim, and a collarless jacket in the same colors (the black sections of tunic and jacket forming a "T") with "Fair Play" written on the sleeves and "Terrific" across the back.

For a time he acted as spokesperson for Tylerco and consulted that company on industrial espionage and security matters in exchange for that company helping fund a youth center Terrific had started.

Holt has a friendly rivalry with Batman, his opposite number in the Justice League of America. Also, Michael Holt has encountered Terry Sloane twice through time travel, with Sloane expressing pride in having so worthy a successor. Holt has been noted as the most intelligent member of the JSA in its history, surpassing his predecessor. He describes himself as the third smartest person in the world, and this notion now appears to be an accepted truth within the DC Universe.

I like the straight intellectual/atheist they've written for him. Makes him very interesting. Plus, in the rather weak "Lightning Saga" story arc, the best part was the sequence where he play two people in chess blind-folded, and the subsequent "twist" in the game.

19. "Night Thrasher"
In response to Reply # 0

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Night_Thrasher

Night Thrasher is the founder and leader of the New Warriors, and head of the Taylor Foundation. Although he possesses no superhuman powers, he has trained himself extensively in many martial arts, and is adept at building technological devices.

Night Thrasher is very similar to DC Comics' Batman, with almost exactly the same origin story (driven to fight crime after parents murdered in front of him as a child, although the circumstances of his parents' deaths was later greatly elaborated upon as something more than simply a random criminal act) and power set (trained human with gadgets).

The X-books tend to overdo the "tough, heartless soldier on a mission" personality. They also have dipped into the "Dismal alternate future for mutants" bag too many times as well.

Add them together and you get a pretty boring, uninteresting character. Cable was fortunate enough to have the X-Force & his own series which forced more interesting development.

To be honest, his status now as a traitor to the X-Men, probably on the run, has more potential to be interesting than anything else I've seen Bishop in. While his actions were a bit over the edge, we don't know what future events made them necessary (in his mind, at least). He might not be as crazy as he seemed.

Peace,

His mini-series was excellent, it gave him a lot more backstory, made him even more likable. Though I'm sure lot of folks thought it was racially incendiary.

Happens all the time with black characters in comics. The Truth miniseries was inspired by true events, but that didn't stop the death threats from coming in.

In response to Reply # 0

http://en.dcdatabaseproject.com/Static

Virgil gained his electromagnetic powers at a huge showdown between the
gangs of the city, where he hoped to get revenge on a gangbanger who had
been bullying him. The authorities released a tear gas marked with a
harmless radioactive marker so that any gangbangers would not escape
arrest, not knowing that it had been further spiked with an experimental
mutagen called Quantum Juice (Q-Juice). This event ultimately came to
be known as the so-called "Big Bang" (a massive fight between about all
the gangbangers in Dakota City - and a massive mutagenic gas explosion).

Virgil was exposed to the gas, and when the agency behind the experiment
tried to capture him, he fought back, discovering that he had gained
the ability to generate, manipulate, and control electromagnetism.
Virgil named himself "Static" and armed with his intelligence, his wits
and his new powers, Static became a superhero.

I think Hardware was Milestone's strongest character. Once McDuffie left the book its quality became spotty, but I always thought the overall character was great.

He didn't start off as the perfect hero from jump. He was out for revenge, killed some people in the process, became haunted by it, and switched his steeze up. I don't even think he ever got around to believing that he actually was a hero either. He was pretty much just doing his thing, not realizing that he was actually a good person.

Sometime later, Mari's mother is killed by poachers and she is raised by her father Reverend Richard Jiwe, the village priest. Reverend Jiwe himself is killed by his half-brother General Maksai. Maksai wants the Tantu Totem, which Jiwe had been in possession of. She moves to America, where she establishes an identity as Mari McCabe and gets a job as a model in New York City. Generation X and X-Force were my favorite books for a long time so I had a lot of experience with Penance and M, but her story was so convoluted over time. It was hard to keep up with who she was actually after the Twins came up.

63. "SYNCH!!!"

Since Monet was mentioned, we of course have to make mention of Everett

Real Name: Everett Thomas
Affiliation: Generation X
Status: Presumed deceased
Powers: Synch, much like the Mimic, took on the powers of any mutant in his vicinity, including any physical manifestations of mutancy. Everett could also use his "aura" to track other mutants. He seemed to be totally in control, and often knew how to use other mutants' powers better than they do themselves. An incredibly even-tempered young man, Ev refused to take revenge on human bigots from the nearby town, even after he was once beaten by them.
Everett was first located by Banshee and Emma Frost when they were on the run from the Phalanx and simultaneously trying to protect the neo-mutants found in Xavier's files. They narrowly saved Everett from the Phalanx and he helped them locate and save the other mutants who eventually became Generation X.

I was so pissed when they killed Ev, he was one of my favorite Mutants since Moonstar.

that was the most stupid comic death I can remember, and would be the most difficult to ret-con if the wanted to bring Ev back.

He had such a great future. He would have made an awesome X-Man, even possibly reached team leader status. The only thing right now that I would like to see, is somebody with the balls to do it get a hold of Exiles and bring him back.

One thing I read said he was Alpha level, but I think that's short changing him. He was already able to use other people's powers often with better fine control. If he ever permanently was able to absorb powers, he would have been just under Omega level.

Man I miss Synch...
