Oscar-winning film "Crash" heads for TV
Mon Jan 28, 2008 6:23pm EST

By Steve Gorman

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - "Crash," the racially charged drama that won the Oscar for best picture of 2005, is coming to the small screen later this year as a TV series for the Starz network, the pay cable channel said on Monday.

The film's director, co-writer and producer, Paul Haggis, will lead the show's creative team as executive producer along with actor Don Cheadle, who starred in and shared a producer credit on the movie.

Starz programming executive Stephan Shelanski said there is a "strong possibility" that Cheadle will reprise his film role as a police detective for the "Crash" TV series, which he said would basically pick up where the film left off.

The series will begin shooting this spring and is expected to premiere as early as August 2008, Shelanski said. The premium cable channel, owned by John Malone's Liberty Media Corp, has ordered 13 one-hour episodes to start.

"Crash," a relatively small-budget movie, was released by Lionsgate Entertainment in 2005 and explored ethnic and racial tensions in urban America through a series of interwoven storylines and characters, with several ironic twists. Lionsgate will co-produce the TV show.

The new project would mark only the second time a best film Oscar winner has been made into a TV series. The first was the 1967 film "In the Heat of the Night," another movie with strong racial themes that debuted as a CBS drama two decades later.

In addition to its Academy Award for best picture, "Crash" earned an Oscar for original screenplay, shared by Haggis and Bobby Moresco, who also is an executive producer for the show.

Shelanski said he expected Cheadle to be instrumental in recruiting some of his "Crash" movie co-stars to join the TV series, at least for the first episode or two. Cheadle also helped line up much of the movie's cast.

The movie's all-star ensemble also included Sandra Bullock, Matt Dillon, Brendan Fraser, Terrence Howard, Chris "Ludacris" Bridges, Thandie Newton and Ryan Philippe.

"We're just going to rely on the strength of the material and the relationship that Don Cheadle and Paul Haggis had to get the original cast involved," Shelanski said. "We're talking to everybody. We would love to have as many of the cast members from this film as possible reprise their roles."

No casting choices have been made, but Shelanski said the producers were disinclined to bring back a movie character unless the actor or actress in that role could do the show.

In a statement, Cheadle said the TV series "will present an opportunity to delve into many subjects, not just race relations in L.A."

The show is the first original drama series produced by Starz, which was formed as a movie channel but began branching out into new content with the launch of two original half-hour comedies last week -- "Head Case" and "Hollywood Residential."

Found this while IMDBing Lizzy Caplan's bio post-Cloverfield. It has a pretty big name cast too, with Harrison Ford, Sean Penn, Ray Liotta, Ashley Judd.

Plot summary for
Crossing Over (2008)
advertisement
* photos * board * trailer * details

Crossing Over is a multi-character canvas about immigrants of different nationalities struggling to achieve legal status in Los Angeles. The film deals with the border, document fraud, the asylum and green card process, work-site enforcement, naturalization, the office of counter terrorism and the clash of cultures. Written by Wayne Kramer

And the LA Times says this:
"Crossing Over: Wayne Kramer's early summer release Crossing Over has shades of Paul Haggis' best picture Oscar winner Crash. Meaning, it contains all the right ingredients for awards attention: a star-filled ensemble cast, a prestige production team, and touchstone cultural and political issues. Centered on immigrants from around the world who enter Los Angeles every day with visions of better lives, the Weinstein Co. film features Harrison Ford, Sean Penn, Ashley Judd and Alice Braga. "

The polarizing opinions of the film have been fleshed out to death. That horse has been beaten more times than any other animal on this board other than: Tarantino/Pulp Fiction, Fight Club, and Donnie Darko.

To briefly summarize: when the film ended, I turned to my fiance and said "Fuck Paul Haggis." And she, who can find the silver lining in just about any movie, retorted "That may have been the most contrived and trite piece of shit to ever pretend to discuss race in this country." The people behind us? They were crying because the end of the film was so deep and moving and thought provoking.

At least Fight Club delivers its cliched message in a new way, and it goes out onto a limb with a ballsy ending. Whether or not it works is the discussion, but it was made with a "fuck everyone" spirit, not a "let's play it safe" spirit. I prefer the former, it's far more cinematically interesting, and far less unintentionally funny.

He just got off the wildly successful Ocean's flicks, a Best PIcture winner where he was the central character, AND two critically-acclaimed flicks where he was the lead.

Has there ever been an Oscar-nominated dramatic actor at the height of his career who said "Let's do a TV series!"? I'm not being sarcastic, I just literally can't recall one.

Maybe Forest Whitaker? Or was he signed up for The Shield before Last King of Scotland? But even for Forest, that Oscar was the first big showy role in his career. Don's now had 2 leads (3 if you count Crash) in a row alongside those Ocean's flicks, and I would imagine would wanna keep that steamroller plowing along.

Absolutely. Which is why it's a bonus for this show to have his name on it. In this case, his name is currency: "from Academy Award winning actor Don Cheadle... (and Paul Haggis and nem)"

And let's all remember that Cheadle was a producer on Crash as well.

>Has there ever been an Oscar-nominated dramatic actor at the

I can't recall one either, but that doesn't mean it couldn't and shouldn't be done.

I mean, Tom Hanks' career hasn't really suffered by going back-and-forth between TV and film, has it?

Unless he's appearing in every episode, the fact that he's working in TV doesn't mean that the film steamroller stops.

The bottom line is, the old 80's and 90's way of thinking that TV is/was a step down in an actor's career is dead.

Only a few years ago, TV was still considered a wasteland, where careers went to die. But for a while now the the most challenging and creative work has been on boob tube. For a minute it was just HBO, then some Showtime. Now the stuff on basic cable kicks the ass of almost anything on network TV and most movies too.

That, and Cheadle gets to exec produce?

Why he'd do a TV show isn't the question.

The real question is, why revisit Crash? I guess he owns a piece and that's that. But I'd like the think Cheadle might have some other fresher ideas for a TV show.

...but I just don't get this move acting-wise. One minute, he's in talks to be a lead in a big Miles Davis biopic, the next minute he's revisiting one of his least showy roles of late on the Starz network (which isn't exactly proven territory).

The only reason I understand his interest in being in it is because then people might be more inclined to watch, and as exec producer he stands to profit.

But still, stars revisiting their role from a film on a regular TV series? I just think that's a bad look.

In response to Reply # 36

His reputation as a great actor who picks great roles? Do we really believe that the backers behind the Miles Davis Story are going to raise their eyebrows then close their checkbooks just because Don Cheadle did a few scenes for Crash: The TV Show?

Again, TV is no longer considered a "lesser" artform, and actors of all stripes are realizing that. And Don Cheadle will lose nothing by working there.

I just think the movie sucks, the TV show will suck, Starz prolly doesn't get through-the-roof ratings, and I'd rather see Cheadle do something not sucky.

But it ain't up to me. So make that paper, Don.

If he wasn't too talented for the actual movie, how is playing the same character suddenly beneath him?

CRASH can teach you about how white liberal guilt clouds TRUE exposure to learning about racism and finding the tools necessary to actively question, interrogate, and change your (white people) own views of racism and, if not become anti-racist, at least be on the path to challenging your racist tendencies and those around you....

given how one-sided the film was, it doesnt teach you about racism. at all.

i saw the advance pilot episode...

and its interesting...they're setting up some of the plot points from CRASH but the characters seem intriguing and there is some potential...

but, i would have to see a couple eps and some reviews before i committed to watching it....

but, they sure upped the nudity and graphic sex content...

and, this doesnt kill don cheadle's career..it definitely means he is versatile and if this show gets critical and awards buzz...his stock will rise even more than it is now...

but, crash had its moment, but the writing was problematic, some of the acting was horrible...the plotting was fucked up (i mean, how are the white characters being redeemed for what they've done, but the characters of color aren't? Christine (Thandie Newton) doesn't get retribution for being molested? really?)

but, i'm with ZooTown...im getting my samples together period...and, since cable shows are becoming some of THE shows to spec....

but, paul haggis is a somewhat decent screenwriter with a long career in film and tv...if this show goes past a season, hell, i'd submit for it...spec wise....
