I'm not positive what movies are even coming out next year, except for a few big franchise movies which I would imagine come out in the summer, but it's one of my most anticipated for 2008.

Does it have a release date yet?

Although after watching the trailer I kinda feel like I already saw the movie.

Movies like that, I wish I would just hear about from word of mouth.

After Eternal Sunshine I had high hopes for The Science of Sleep but I still haven't been able to get all the way through it. Great idea but the execution was lacking.

(and how the hell did that person get to see it already),
but anyway,
I agree with ya, Jigga, about "Science of Sleep"- too emotionally personal and suffocating. It was eccentric without any sensable relevance.
Atleast this one isn't about Gondry's life.
I still have hope for him, though. (All he needs is a good script)
That was the case for Spike Jonze as well.

I thought it was okay despite the presence of Mos Def. Really, has this guy been in a movie besides "Something the Lord Made" when he wasn't playing a mubmbling idiot? But I digress. The movie had more "heart" than I expected. I thought it was just going to be about two dummies remaking movies, but it involved bringing together a community. I don't know much about Michel Gondry but I really enjoyed "Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind". And since that was the only other movie of his I've seen. He's two for two with me.

WOW. has it been 8 years now? Anyways, I still think Gondry idea is still orginal. The same idea's are tossed around everyday, but it's what you make of it, that makes it special. Who'll actually remembers that? The Nick Kid gerneration? I mean, Star Wars is a direct copy of...you get my point.

Its not "stolen". Disturbia supposedly wasn't a remake of Rear Window. It happens all the time.

...who haven't really been involved in the creative process before.

Especially considering that me and my friends were making crappy remakes of Hollywood movies in middle school, HOLY CRAP, BEFORE THE AMANDA SHOW EVER EXISTED, I'M CALLING MY LAWYER!! and I'm sure a lot of you guys were, too. It's a widely shared pastime, and it's bound to be percolating in the heads of other creative people. Sometimes the end result is going to come out in similar forms.

It's like a guy I know who seriously wants to sue Desparate Housewives because he was working on a script about a guy who's tied up and held prisoner in a suburban basement. He's deluded himself to think that his idea is too unique to possibly be thought of by more than one person. But when you have a million writers think "what if I showed things aren't as idyllic as they seem in suburban America" there's going to be a lot of similiar ideas popping up completely independent of each other.

Now after this long post I wrote, watch Gondry admit he ripped his movie off from the Amanda Show. If he has any decency he'll do it soon so I have time to edit.

With the Nickelodeon clip, the joke is that the movies suck and people hate them. At the heart of this skit is a mean spirited, xenophobic attack on foreign-made consumer products. Be Kind Rewind is pretty much the exact opposite of all of that.

Please tell me people don't seriously think this is an example of plagiarism.

Pretty funny throughout, with little pockets of brilliance every now and then. Corny, yes. But in a totally whimsical and charming way. It's Gondry all the way, you should know what you're getting into by now.

Obviously, the 'sweded' movies are the highlight. But much to my surprise, some of the best jokes of the film aren't in the swedes. The 'camouflage' and the 'hall of mirrors!' killed. Absolutely killed. The plot is pretty much a paint by numbers affair but that's not really the point.

Some really amazing no budget visuals as expected.

Walking out of the theater I overheard several people reminiscing about the crappy movies they used to make as kids. This flick maybe isn't a grand slam but it is funny and it does capture the magic of storytelling and collaborating with friends.

It was not as laugh out loud funny as I thought it would be but...

it was a really enjoyable film with likable characters, a funny premise and a very pro-community message. Dare I say the movie was actually sweet?

It definitely put a smile on my face and is worth checking out.

I agree. The idea seemed to be better than the execution. I loved the movies, but the rest of the film was a little flat. I,too, found the movie to be heartwarming.

I was hyped up about it ever since I read about the initial concept a few years ago.

Ghostbusters car = hilarious, Jack Black as Robocop = hilarious

Gondry is the most interesting director out right now.

I was excited to see this, but it fell extremely flat for me. The Driving Miss Daisy sequence was funny, but otherwise, the script was weak and the pacing was awful. This felt like Punch Drunk Love, where it didn't know if it was supposed to be funny or touching and tried to be everything at the wrong times.
I can only hope that Gondry was intentionally trying to make his approach as amateurish as his characters' films, but I doubt it. Wait for Netflix.

I love Gondry. I love the spirit of the movie and everything he does. Me and my brother went to his exhibit for the movie in SoHo and it was hilarious. Does take you back to being a kid and making/wearing crappy costumes and making junky but fun home movies. The movie had alot of heart and was definitely funny but was obviously made on a shoe string budget and certain things could have been improved on. As much as I like Mos and I think he's a decent actor this would have been a thousand times funnier if it had been Chappelle as intended. But like other posters said it put the audience in a good mood and it's great, almost amazing that a movie like this got made. So in that sense I think it's a success.

Can't really be mad at Gondry, ever.
It definitely wasn't a hunched over belly busting, tears rolling comedy
and it wasn't a bizarre wtf is going on Gondry type film either.

It's like Gondry doing a family film. There are the funny parts and the heartfelt parts. Overall, it has a raw loose acting feel to it that might seem amateurish, but feels a bit more like reality. It's also reminds me of some of my favorite movies from the 80s. I couldn't help but think of Batteries Not Included once I caught on to the plot.

It was a decent film, but nothing super moving like I felt Eternal Sunshine was. It's inspirational though.

Is it illegal just because you used the same name or package, or can you
do stuff like "Scary Movie" or "Meet the Spartans" with out getting licensing from the
films they are spoofing? That sounds like it would be a hell of a good niche market
for film. Peace.

they used the actual tapes the original movies were on. Those tapes are the property of the movie studios. They don't "sell" the tapes to the video stores, they "license" them. If they used their own blank tapes, they would have been in the clear because they were making "parodies".

but the pacing was a little weird and IMO the characters seemed too flat at times. And I think they overdid some of JB's scenes (mainly him getting shocked.

The funniest thing, Jerry going outside to throw up and then peeing on the street only for loose metal to attracted to his magnetized piss.

I saw it in the movie theaters.

I usually don't like movies with such warm endings, but this worked well.

almost like the american version of Science of Sleep. The imagination was there, but the plot seem to be not edited right?! seem like it was too all over the place. But overall, I think this movie deserve more credit especially if you watched the Behind the Scenes take, and how much the community actually put into this movie.

it had an almost afternoon special / 80's feel to it, in a charming sort of way.

the sweding was amazing and I really liked how it wasn't just Black/Mos doing them -- after all, this was a "community" film.

an actual feel-good movie for me, and I'm not one to go see feel-good movies.

full disclosure: I think Jack Black is funny. by this point, you know whether you love/hate him...so adjust your expectations accordingly.
