have ended it just about any way they wanted to, because nowhere in the decade leading up to it did you think that would be the likely/appropriate outcome.
Considering all the drama going on between Martin and Tisha at the time, along with Martin's habit, yeah...it sucked. They couldn't even be in the same room at the same time.
The first half hour was decent, if not run of the mill. It gave closure, let you know where everyone was going and shit. The second half hour was pure shit. You got Tommy all up in Nipsey's damn near introducing random-ass celebs (George Clinton, Lisa Leslie, etc) like he on a talk show or something, I was so disappointed by that.

I mean, just a purely brilliant way to go out, perfectly fitting to the series. I am one of those who loved the Sopranos finale, but it doesn't touch SFU, to me. I was an absolute wreck at the end of SFU, it just clobbered me. I'm just glad season 5 is back on OnDemand, so the next time SFU changes over, I get to watch the finale a couple more times.

Q has Picard moving back and forth through time and every time he tried to explain what was happening he would find himself in another time jump. Crew members in all three time periods that Picard jumps through (past, present, and distant future) believe Picard is crazy since no one else is experiencing these moves through time. Somewhere in the finale, Q tells Picard that the end of humanity rests in his hands because of a spatial anomaly that could stop life from ever forming. Picard convinces crew members in all three time periods to venture towards the anomaly so the three Enterprise ships from the past, present, and distant future enter the center of the anomaly at the same time. The past and present ships are destroyed in it while the future ship remains intact. In the end, Picard finds himself in the courtroom where he first met Q. Q tells Picard that he succeeded because he explored other possibilities beyond the limits of his mind. The show ends with Picard, Rikier, Worf, Data, Troi, Crusher, and LaForge playing a poker game as the Enterprise drifts through space.
I wish I could explain it better but I had to summarize it. It doesn't sound exciting like this, but the two-parter in one of the best finales ever.
Loved the show, but the constraints that were being put on them in the last season is fairly noticeable in the last few episodes (although it did create one of the best episodes Joss Whedon has done on any show ever.)

It's what everyone expected to happen as a finale for that series but all we got was Steve being lost in space. That was the last episode right?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I didn't think A Different World had a true series finale.
The episdoe where Dwayne and Whitley leave and Dwayne has beef with Ron that they squash before he leaves was a great episode, but there were several after that with the "new class" that they had been transitioning up to that point.
I thought that the show got cancelled mid-season with episodes still in the can that eventually ran on syndication, including the episode where Tupac shows up as Jada's ex-boyfriend from Baltimore. I think the last actual episode was the one where Billy Dee was playing an old negro league baseball player.

The episode list has the one with Lena Horne as the last aired episode, and Dwayne and Whitley were both in those "new class" episodes, so I think NBC just aired the series finale to coincide with the de facto end of the season. I believe that the "new class" ones aired after the series finale, similar to what "Saved by the Bell" did that same season (episodes with Tori after the graduation ep, I believe), both of which makes their runs in syndication seem out of sequence.

As for worst, I have to contradict a post someone else made. I absolutely hated the Twin Peaks finale, probably because I thought the show had declined beyond redemption at that point. Another one I thought was a bad ending to a once great show was the finale to the X-Files.
And there are two series finales I eagerly await, for very different reasons:
Lost (because I want to see what kind of resolution they come up with for the mysteries of the show, which I still love) and...
The Simpsons (because the show needs to be put out of its misery, but I'm betting they would do a really good finale)

God Damn, was that awful.
I know I shoulda stopped watching the show years ago when it started getting really ridiculous but the past season and a half was almost bearable (outside of the Max parts which I always fast-forward) and at times entertaining, plus I just never got around to deleting it off my DVR menu and I'd already invested enough time in the characters.
But last night, holy shit. They managed to end the series after six years by killing off one of the most hateable characters in the history of TV but do it off-screen, then leave the series hanging on a lame whodunit with no real clues......in an effort to get fans to check their website periodically while they release each character's individual interrogation room interview over a matter of months.
