"Open Letter from Tyler Perry to his critics (swipe):"

(swiped from EUR)

*Tyler Perry has distributed another e-mail to his fans, this time defending the girth of his lead actors in “House of Payne,” the filmmaker’s new sitcom airing Wednesdays on TBS.

Stars LaVan Davis and Cassie Davis have apparently been criticized for being overweight. Also, Perry’s letter suggests that some have accused him of perpetuating the stereotype of portly black mothers.

Perry begins his e-mail response by pointing out the harsh treatment he’s received from critics throughout his career. He writes:

You all know that the critics have hated every thing that I have done over the years. Roger Ebert gave DIARY OF A MAD BLACK WOMAN-THE MOVIE an awful review, one critic called MADEA'S FAMILY REUNION-THE MOVIE the worst thing that he'd ever seen, some other critic said that DADDY'S LITTLE GIRLS shouldn't have ever been made and that I had to be stopped. Not to mention the plays, a critic in L.A. said of MADEA GOES TO JAIL, that it was the worst play he'd ever seen and that this type of show should not be at the Kodak Theatre, the home of the Oscars.

So over the years I have learned to ignore these people and keep doing what I feel that I am being led to do. But when people begin to attack certain cast members of HOUSE OF PAYNE because they are overweight, then I have to say something. Just because a person is overweight doesn't mean that they are less than anybody else. That's why these people have not been able to get a job for years in Hollywood. One person even asked, "Why do you even hire them?" I hire all kinds of people--thin, not so thin, tall, short, in shape, not in shape, Black, White, Latino. When somebody comes to work for me I don't see color, I don't see their size, all I want to know is "Can you do the job?"

One person asked why does the mama have to be a "FAT BLACK WOMAN" and said that I am perpetuating stereotypes by putting these overweight people on the show, as if there are no fat black women in America that are mothers. My mother and aunts are fat black women. And that upsets me to think that people, especially Black people, would say that I'm doing a disservice to America by putting them on T.V. Skinny does not make you beautiful. There are all kinds of beautiful women in this world. And if we begin to look at the heart of a person rather than prejudge then we would see that we are missing some of the nicest and most talented people in the world. I'm sorry but I had to get that off my chest. I just don't like to see good people hurt because of ignorance and intolerance.

I won't apologize for putting these people in this show. I don't ever remember hearing any of this about ROSANNE. They deserve to be on this show. They are very good, caring, God-fearing people who needed a hand. And I am so grateful that so many of you are watching HOUSE OF PAYNE and making their dreams come true everyday.

God bless,

T.P.

it's almost as if he's just as bad. that letter reads like:

"See, America? Fat people CAN make you laugh. We don't have to be afraid to hire them!!!!!"

He's inadvertently supporting stereotypes, and almost appearing apologetic about fat people in the letter. "they're some of the nicest people in the world!!!"

He stopped just short of "I used to WORK with a Fat guy, and he was ok...Hey, I even have fat FRIENDS!!!"

Still, it is honorable that he comes to the defense of his actors.

It would be more honorable if he didn't include that little pity party at the beginning of this letter. He need not produce critical clips that point out the fact he can't write; we already know this.

...the actors are fat, are because they say it isn't funny?

Personally, I've never seen an episode of "House of Payne." I've also completely ignored what the critics have said about it. But part of me suspects that he's attacking snarky comments by critics about some of the overweight people on the show, and possibly ignoring larger criticisms they might have with it.

Like I said, I can't be sure, because "House of Payne" had been off my radar since the NBA play-offs on TNT ended.

i always saw the advertisements and hoopla of his play's and movies, and i had NO interest in seeing them.

finally, I got an opportunity to see some of his plays on dvd and family reunion, and diary of a mad black woman. I laughed like crazy. I enjoyed them a great deal. I like his work.

I don't know. I'm a person and I said "I saw one of his movies and it was awful." His bank account in a very small way can still attest to this. Is that what matters most, then?

its one thing to criticize
the cat for his craftmanship
(see: big nick), but to get
mad cause dude has the audacity
to show people who are not - GASP -
thin, beautiful or hollywood?

the gall!!

again, criticize his actors for not
being funny, but don't criticize them
for being fat.

unless, of course, you are ashamed
of these fat, black people who reside
all through our communities...<-- but that might be another post

It's far too easy to criticize that show. It's that horrible. So in order to be as equally harsh and over-the-top with the criticism, critics had to go there (with the overweight actors).

The main conundrum revolving TP's stuff is that through all of the horrid nonsense, there still SOME redeeming factors hidden there. In other words, you could defend some of his stuff but this show?

Nope. You can't defend that show. You can't even criticize it because everyone's in agreement with how bad it is. I still haven't come across ONE person that likes it.

House of Payne is the dead horse that's being beaten so much that it has been reincarnated and killed again to be beaten more.

Him starting off by defending the criticisms of shitty work doesn't help his case.

I haven't read said criticsms about the overweight actors for myself, but I can see why anyone would criticize. It's not the actors being overweight alone that's the problem; it's the portly appearance in conjunction with the cooning that he passes off as comedy that perpetuates those stereotypes. He, however, refuses to acknowledge or address that. I respect that dude is getting paid, but I refuse to support bullshit.

32. "Tyler Perry Q & A (swipe)"
In response to Reply # 0

More black PTP hit doggery. Also, the article's from a white magazine, so I know it's reputable. From ew.com:

>The Q&A

Rocking the 'House'

Tyler Perry on making hits outside Hollywood: The busy media mogul talks about his most recent success -- TV's record-breaking ''House of Payne'' -- and his many, many other projects

By Tim Stack

He lit up the box office with hits like Diary of a Mad Black Woman; now Tyler Perry is bringin' the Payne to television. On June 6, the writer/director/actor saw the first two episodes of the sitcom he created, Tyler Perry's House of Payne, debut with an average of 5.5 million viewers — a record audience for a basic-cable original sitcom premiere. ''All I could do is say, 'Thank you, Jesus!''' said the 37-year-old about the runaway success of his show, which centers on a working-class African-American family and has already gotten a huge 100-episode order from TBS. The man with the Midas touch chatted with EW.com about his upcoming film projects (including November's Why Did I Get Married?, starring Janet Jackson), his television goals, and why he'll never enter the music business.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Why do you think audiences responded so well to House of Payne?

TYLER PERRY: It's something different that hasn't been done before. The show is going to go in a whole lotta directions. I break all the rules. I think that's part of the appeal, but we'll see what happens.
I watched the latest episodes, which had a subplot about crack addiction — pretty tough stuff for a show that's billed as a comedy. Is it a priority for you that the subject matter stays edgy like that?
Yes. It's so difficult for African-American people to have a drama on television. It's (rarely) happened before, so where else do you put it? Until I can get into a position where I can have a complete drama, then I'll keep mixing (the genres) all together.

EW: You're shooting the show at production facilities in your hometown of Atlanta, you're on cable instead of a network... Why, with all the huge success that you've had, are you staying relatively grassroots?

TP: Well, (otherwise) the artists have no say. I don't want to give something to a public that's buying my brand that is not me. If I have no say in it, then they're not buying my brand — they're buying something that's been watered down or changed or tainted. It's not that I'm a control freak. I can absolutely work with people as long as the idea I have is coming across.

EW: Why did ultimately you go with TBS? Had you been approached by other networks?

TP: After the tests ran last year, there were a few offers. I wanted somebody who would be as invested as I am and wouldn't just want five episodes, or six episodes, or even 20. I knew if they made (a big) commitment, they would blow it out of the water, and that's just what TBS did (by ordering 100 episodes).

EW: About those 100 episodes — how are they broken up per season?

TP: We're shooting three episodes a week, and we'll be done by the end of the year.

EW: Wow. How big is your writing staff?

TP: It's about 15 of us in the room, and we map out and write them. But we started writing six months before we started shooting... I'm directing every episode, (and) working with the writers on every episode.

EW: After the 100 are completed, is that the end of House of Payne, or do you think it will keep going?

TP: There hasn't been any talk about it as of yet... But 100 episodes is (the amount needed for) syndication. That's five days a week! Most shows go four years to get there.

EW: Has TBS talked to you about doing another comedy?

TP: Everything's very fresh. You're talking (just a few) days ago that all of this has happened. But I do have another sitcom (I'm developing) called Meet the Browns...

EW: Based on your play?

Tp: Yes, based on the character from the play. The Brown character is just as popular as Madea (the sassy matriarch Perry has played on stage and screen). The film version (of Meet the Browns, starring Angela Bassett) comes out in February — we're shooting it next month. I think the ratings (for a sitcom adaptation) would be unbelievable, because the characters are already built-in and have a huge following. We shot 10 episodes last December that are ready to go right behind House of Payne. I would be really happy for TBS to have it, because the promotion they put behind House of Payne just really blew my mind.

EW: Would you ever consider doing a television drama?

TP: I can tell you my short-term plan here in the next year or two: I'd love to have an entire night where I have three or four sitcoms on, and a drama, and a Tyler Perry talk show on just one day a week. That would be the thing I would love to have going. I think that whole four-hour block is very possible. That's the short-term goal. The long-term goal is to own a network.

EW: Tell us a little about the talk show you're about to launch on TylerPerry.com.

TP: I shot 12 episodes that will be running over the next month or two, on broadband streaming from my website. There's a live studio audience... Again, it breaks all the rules. It's a cross between Oprah and Leno, I think: One day I could be talking about serious subjects, and then the next day we could be having fun and listening to some great singers. It's all over the place.

EW: And what's going on with your next movie, Why Did I Get Married?

TP: It's done — it's in the can. We're really excited about it. Janet Jackson looks phenomenal in it, and Jill Scott too. They're unbelievable.

EW: Like Daddy's Little Girls, this movie has no Madea. Do you ever worry about your projects that don't have her in them, since she's so popular?

TP: No... To keep the value of the character, she shouldn't be too exposed. You know, Daddy's Little Girls left the box office doing $30 million, and it was an $8 million movie. So it was a huge success.

EW: You've done theater, TV, film... so the music biz must be next on your checklist, right? Got any plans to start a label?

TP: I've written quite a few songs that have been on the radio and everything. But I don't want to have a label. I don't want to be in that business AT ALL. At all. The record business is such a nightmare to me. I've done three soundtracks for my films, and the whole industry is just in such turmoil that I couldn't function over there. No, no, no.

EW: So what's the next project you'd say ''yes, yes, yes'' to?

TP: A vacation! I think I'm going to take the month of September off and travel the world for a bit.

whatever. every post-cosby black show could be described as wack and stereotypical, so why is this nigga gettin extra heat?

'cause he's making loot.

there's a problem in the entertainment industry that many seem afraid to face: blacks who achieve substantial success without the blessing, cosignage or awareness of white folk are invariably shit on. they just don't understand HOW a nigga can do it. and they really do get mad at black folks for supporting it. it's disgusting.

and y'all wonder why i always whittle these decidely complex discussions down to: "they just mad"

Because if it is wack and stereotypical and it goes nowhere, then all is right with the world.

Anything that one group thinks is wack but it achieves big success is going to get hate from that first group. People don't like things they can't understand, things that don't fit into their tidy little categories.

It's the same for white movies and TV shows too. Just go back to the Evan Almighty post. Just look at your own reaction to Tarantino. People hate what they don't understand.

I hate his work and his message, and probably all the people who take his shit as gospel - but a black man doing his own thing, I'm all for that.

It's pretty clear that black art that is left of center doesn't appeal to a broad swath of black people. (and the left of center stuff is usually regurgitated garbage as well, but y'all keep watching Eve's Bayou talking bout depth and shit)

And I'm okay with the mass of black folks flocking to see Soul Plane and Training day, and not Bamako.

I'm not here to "civilize an 85er"

if we had more black people on tv that werent the "fat black woman" type (look at the majority of your commercials), then it wouldnt be a problem.

there was need to raise a stink about king of queens or rosanne because there's enough "regular" sized white folk on tv to balance that out

When there are so many good reasons to hate the show. Besides, a lot of black mommas are overweight, including my own.
