"Netflix just took a giant shit on Blockbuster online."

Now I'm off to watch Zach Galifianakis: Live at the Purple Onion.

http://lifehacker.com/software/netflix/enable-netflix-watch-now-movie-streaming-on-any-account-242325.php

If you've been eagerly awaiting the day that you can try streaming Netflix videos straight to your computer, but their new "Watch Now" feature still isn't enabled on your account, your wait is over. Weblog UneasySilence details how to enable Watch Now in your account... right now:

* Log into Netflix.
* Click on "Your Account"
* Look for a small graphic on the right column that says "How can I watch movies on my PC?"
* Click the "Start Now" link, and voila, you have a new tab next to Queue.

You can also just follow this link once you've logged in to achieve the same results. There are downsides the the Watch Now service - for example, it currently requires Internet Explorer, and the video quality isn't all top notch, but there's a lot of promise here. — Adam Pash

how does blockbuster expect to maintain the services they currently offer?
if anyone can mail order their movies, and then, if they feel like it, just stroll
down to their nearest bb, and switch the movies for free, how are they gonna come up
with the $$$ to keep these brick & mortar locales up and running?

and people, you can actually watch movies from your computer ON YOUR 21" TELEVISION. all you need is an S-video cable.

one of the strong themes is:

hypothetically, if we raised the mailed movies + total access cost to 24.99, and made mailed movies only (3 at a time) to 17.99, what would you do?

i said i'd quit

(i won't)

but anyway, it's coming down the pipe. they'll be making these different options and raising prices sometime this year

I keep discussing the Netflix vs BB conflict with a friend of mine.
He wants to buy BB stock, which is hovering right now between $6-$7, on
the premise that it's gonna gain on Netflix, but personally I doubt it.

He seems to like the service, but I think Netflix keeps staying ahead of the curve. I'm also wondering which service would be better for me right now.

and select that you want to cancel. it will give you the option to hold the account for 90 days. you don't have to pay any monthly fees and the account will automatically restart after 90 days, or the date that you set. you just have to return any movies that you currently have out.

So, I assume this option appears in the last steps in the "cancel membership" process 'cause I tried to find it a while back and I guess I didn't go far enough to see it.

One can reactivate the account anytime prior to the chosen date?

In response to Reply # 33

The first time I did it I was expecting them to say "no you can't pick new releases".

The downside is you still have to pay late fees if you bring back late. So I guess they figure enough people will bring back the movies late that they'll get some loot out of it.

But I swap mine pretty often and I've only got stuck w/ fees once. So it works out well for me. I'm getting double-movies and whatnot.

The other thing is, they may be getting a discount w/ the post office for the mailers picked up in-store vs. from your mailbox, so they might have a cost-savings there that balances it out.

or they're just stupid. lol

peace

other than for their own original content, netflix has yet to add these, and even their own is pretty paltry. they've now launched podcasts and haven't even integrated them into their platform. it seems like such a wasted opportunity to me, yet i'm one of those geeks who still cares about extras when nearly everyone else has moved on or doesn't know what they are or were.

the only streamer that seemed to really embrace extras was filmstruck, which went kaput. there isn't a sizable audience that really cares about film as an artform and is interested in it from a historical point of view, let warner tell it.

Vacation policy at Netflix: Take as much as you want
By Ryan Blitstein
Mercury News
San Jose Mercury News
Article Launched:03/22/2007 01:49:12 AM PDT
When it comes to vacation, Netflix has a simple policy: take as much as you'd like. Just make sure your work is done.

Employees at the online movie retailer often leave for three, four, even five weeks at a time and never clock in or out. Vacation limits and face-time requirements, says Netflix Chief Executive Reed Hastings, are "a relic of the industrial age."

"The worst thing is for a manager to come in and tell me: `Let's give Susie a huge raise because she's always in the office.' What do I care? I want managers to come to me and say: `Let's give a really big raise to Sally because she's getting a lot done' - not because she's chained to her desk."

Across America, executives are searching for ways to keep experienced Baby Boomers at their companies and attract younger workers, many of whom are used to controlling which songs they listen to and where they get their news.

Netflix's time off rules - or lack thereof - are part of a broad culture of employee autonomy instilled in the company when Hastings founded it a decade ago. The executives trust staffers to make their own decisions on everything - from whether to bring their dog to the office to how much of their salary they want in cash and how much in stock options. Workers are treated, as Chief Talent Officer Patty McCord likes to say, as adults.

"We want our employees to have great freedom - freedom to be brilliant or freedom to make mistakes," Hastings said.

That might sound like executive blather, but to hear employees tell it, on the way to almost $1 billion in sales last year, Netflix has made good on its promises to workers.

"There's an inverse relationship between how often a company talks about its values and how much those values are actually reflected in the workplace," said Heather McIlhany, a Netflix online marketing manager who took a three-week vacation to South Africa in November, just nine months after joining the company. "At Netflix... the freedom is inherent in how we work," McIlhany said.

Though cultural change is hard to measure, some of America's largest businesses are experimenting with unconventional time off rules and benefits. New Brunswick, N.J., healthcare giant Johnson & Johnson has an ever-expanding stable of work-life balance programs, including an extra week's paid vacation for new moms and dads, and for parents adopting.

Retailer Best Buy is implementing a plan to allow employees at corporate headquarters in Richfield, Minn., (and soon, for many in retail stores) to set their own hours and work outside the office. Flexible schedules are now available to 28 percent of full-time U.S. workers, almost twice the number in 1991, according to the non-profit advocacy group Corporate Voices for Working Families.

"Companies are trying to give people more responsibility, more freedom and more flexibility," said Carol Sladek, a principal at Lincolnshire, Ill., human resources consulting firm Hewitt Associates. "If you have more control, your life feels better."

To be sure, Netflix's time off policy is rare, and only applies to its 300-plus salaried workers, not the much larger hourly workforce. Experts said it's hard to imagine a bigger Fortune 500 company adopting the idea. As one Yahoo spokeswoman scoffed: "We're a grown-up company, with over 12,000 employees, and you have to have some semblance of process and procedure."

But even in perk-heavy Silicon Valley, what's happening inside Netflix's Tuscanvilla-style Los Gatos headquarters may be unprecedented.

American workers get a median of 10 vacation days after one year on the job and 15 days after five years of work, according to Hewitt. One in three Americans doesn't use all their vacation, and barely one in 10 takes a break for two weeks straight, according to the non-profit research firm Families and Work Institute. But at Netflix, it's estimated that most employees take off about 25 to 30 days per year, using the time to stay at home with the kids, travel to Cambodia, or visit relatives in India. It's "estimated" because Netflix does not record vacation time, said McCord.

"I've never terminated a salaried employee for being tardy or being absent," McCord said. "There have been issues when people didn't come to work - but the issue is the work, it's not the time off."

Among half a dozen corporate HR experts nationwide, none could name a company with such a widespread and successful unlimited vacation policy. Microsoft tried with executives in the 1990's, but few managers used more than a few weeks.

The roots of the Netflix culture grew partly from difficulties at Hastings' first startup, Pure Software (now part of IBM), where McCord served as director of HR. He made tens of millions at the company, but along the way, Pure lost its spark.

"We had this great early culture, but after we went public we had a lot more normal rules," Hastings said. "You didn't need a bathroom pass to go to the bathroom, but it kind of felt like that sometimes."

In 1998, Hastings lured McCord away from a four-day-a-week consulting gig to join Netflix, persuading her with a vision of "the company we always dreamed of." They've since created a billion-dollar corporation that retains the feel of a family business, where the CEO knows the majority of the 200 or so workers at headquarters by name, partly because he and McCord hold small group meetings with all recent hires.

At one such gathering a few years ago, an employee argued that it didn't make sense for Netflix to track vacation days. "You're not measuring my daily hours, so why are you measuring the number of days I work?" he asked. Hastings and McCord agreed, but the company's attorneys took some convincing.

As remarkable as the rules might sound, Netflix employees weren't surprised.

"We don't think of it as a perk - it's just emblematic of the way we work here," said John Ciancutti, a director of engineering who is traveling for several weeks in the Galapagos Islands with his mother this spring.

The company's work-hard/play-outside-the-office culture is one reason McCord believes Netflix avoided the post-public offering exodus that plagues many technology companies. Five years after the IPO in 2002, six of its seven top executives are still with Netflix.

The worker-oriented rules aid retention in the lower ranks, too; Ciancutti joined as a junior engineer in 1999. And the culture allows the company to hire independent, creative types like Director of Product Management Todd Yellin, who spent much of his first several months on the job traveling to Los Angeles to complete work on an independent film.

Yet open-minded treatment of workers isn't without its challenges. Chief among the problems at similar programs, according to Sladek, is that managers are inconsistent. Some might grant their team two months vacation and two days working at home per week, while others choose two weeks and no telecommuting.

At Netflix, roughly 340 employees in Los Gatos and Beverly Hills manage the company, write the computer code, design the Web site and strike deals with Hollywood studios. The other 1,000 are hourly workers at a customer service center in Hillsboro, Ore., and at DVD mailing hubs around the country. Those workers receive a free Netflix membership and DVD player after three months on the job, and the same healthcare benefits as salaried workers. But they have a fixed amount of paid time off.

Employees schedule time off within the rhythm of their jobs: finance managers stick around in early January to close the year's books; McIlhany front-loaded her work during the first week of November before she left for South Africa; Aroon Ramadoss, an engineering manager who spent five weeks in Europe last summer, took little vacation in 2005.

Still, few executives seem as ready as Hastings to buck conventional wisdom on how we work.

"We're the nation that takes the least amount of time off in the world. We have more rules and regulations that tie people to a clock than a lot of other nations," Sladek said. " where a lot of companies would like to be going. But in practice, they're still few and far between."

don't get the nice perks of their counterparts in streaming, and they always seem so miserable because of it. i think casting off their dvd rentals like netflix did was another wasted opportunity because the two services could have continued to go hand in hand. they basically killed off the format as a whole.

Netflix Preemptively Takes On Apple: Unlimited Online Movies
by Bob Caswell

NetflixNetflix will be making a big announcement tomorrow, coincidentally one day before Apple will be making some big announcements of its own:

Starting Monday, January 14, 2008, Netflix subscribers will have unlimited access to movie viewing online. The company plans to do away with its quota/hours system it had in place before (viewing hours per month were based upon how much you paid for you mail-in DVD plan). The only group of Netflix subscribers to be left out of this unlimited plan: you who pay the minimum of $4.99 to rent just two DVDs per month.

Right now the Netflix online catalog consists of approximately 6,000 titles, which is still only a fraction of the 90,000 titles in the company’s DVD collection. But the number of movies available for online viewing is still on the rise and has doubled since the online service went live a year ago. And it’s still a bigger library than most other video-on-demand services available.

This news has even bigger potential when combined with the previous Netflix announcement of Netflix and LG marketing an LG-branded device (like a cable box) that will allow you to watch movies on your TV via Netflix streaming. The LG partnership is to be the “first of many” Netflix hopes to announce this year with makers of hardware devices, including videogame consoles.

Netflix’s news of unlimited movie watching comes just one day before Apple’s expected release of an iTunes movie rental service. The main advantage Apple will have is that its digital content will be viewable on iPods and iPhones along with computers. But so far, most consumers appear to prefer watching movies on their big-screen TVs. Apple already has a product, Apple TV, which syncs movies from your computer to your TV. But it has been met with some critism and is not without its limitations.

The Netflix unlimited plan may be more attractive than Apple’s expected $3.99 per movie plan, which will likely require movies to be downloaded and viewed within 24 hours of purchase. Whatever the case, more competition in this space is definitely a good thing.

that being said, the overall quality in available films comes and goes. i know this is a very old thread, but clearly netflix took the path of tv series over movies.

In response to Reply # 60

Compared to watching it on a TV, documentaries tend not to require such a large picture to be effective. Plus, there are a number of doc. titles that I wouldn't necessarily move to the top of my queue to fill a shipping spot, but if I can watch 'em sort of as an additional perk, I'm all for it.

As far as selection, Born Into Brothels, Super Size Me, Helvetica, Spellbound, Crumb, The Devil Came on Horseback, etc. are all "major" works.

Recently, I've seen You're Gonna Miss Me, No End in Sight, and a Flaming Lips documentary via instant watching. All recommended.

I think what best comes out of this, is that you can watch unlimited episodes of classic shows such as Quantum Leap, Columbo, and Sliders.

71. "Deal with Starz means more movies to watch instantly"
In response to Reply # 0

The already have the premiere of Crash ready for you guys to watch.

http://gizmodo.com/5057342/netflix-engulfs-starz-content-regurgitates-free-to-subscribers

Netflix just signed a deal allowing them to stream 2,500 Starz Play movies to their subscribers, boosting their streaming video library to over 12,000 pieces of content. Current Netflix subscribers will receive the bonus content free (1,000 films immediately) and cheapos who just want access to the Starz movies can get a subscription through Netflix for $7.99. Good stuff. Now just to wait for that announcement where Apple, Amazon, Netflix, VUDU, the movie studios, satellite providers and cable networks all team up to offer a Utopian platform of instantly streaming HD films.

Netflix and Starz Entertainment Announce Agreement to Make Movies From Starz Play Available for Instant Streaming at Netflix

LOS GATOS, Calif. and ENGLEWOOD, Colo., Oct. 1 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Netflix, Inc. (Nasdaq: NFLX - News), the world's largest online movie rental service, and Starz Entertainment, LLC, a premium movie service provider operating in the U.S., today announced an agreement to make movies from Starz, through its "Starz Play" broadband subscription movie service, available to be streamed instantly at Netflix. Access to the Starz Play service at Netflix will be included with Netflix members' current monthly subscription fee.

The deal adds significantly to a growing library of over 12,000 choices of movies and TV episodes that can be watched instantly at Netflix. Netflix members who have unlimited subscription plans, which start at only $8.99 a month, will have full and unlimited access to approximately 2,500 additional movies and other choices from Starz Play as part of their current monthly subscription. That includes the opportunity to enjoy a live feed of the Starz TV network on their PCs and does not impact the number of DVDs members receive as part of their monthly plans.

The first of the Starz titles — approximately 1,000 — are available now at the Netflix Web site, where they are presented in a distinct area accessible by clicking on the "Watch Instantly" tab on the Netflix member home page. More titles will be added in the coming weeks.

Starz Play, Starz' collection of programming content for online distribution, features a wide variety of first-run hit movies, independent films and well-known movie classics, in addition to extreme sports, concerts, anime, Westerns and more. "Spider-Man(TM) 3," "Ratatouille," "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End," "Superbad," "No Country for Old Men" and "Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert" highlight the movie offerings now available to be watched instantly. Starz Play also features new original content from Starz, including episodes of the upcoming dramatic series "Crash," from the producers of the Academy Award®-winning Best Picture "Crash," which remains the most-rented DVD in the history of Netflix.

Beginning today, Netflix and Starz Play will offer a sneak preview of the first full episode of "Crash" in advance of the Starz primetime premiere on October 17 at 10 p.m. Eastern/Pacific. "Crash" will remain a staple in the Starz Play programming mix and new episodes will debut day-and-date with new episode premieres.

"The coupling of Starz Play with our growing library of streaming content is an important step forward for both companies and for consumer choice," said Ted Sarandos, chief content officer for Netflix. "Our deal reflects the creative ways we are working with content partners to expand the profile and the number of choices our subscribers can watch instantly over the Internet, in addition to the 100,000 titles we offer on DVD through the mail."

Netflix also said that as part of the deal it will offer a Starz Play-only subscription for $7.99 a month.

these were mostly in SD and 4:3 ("formatted for television," just not mine or most people's at that point). i never understood whether that was corner cutting or incompetence. thankfully they learned customers didn't want that in 2008 and beyond. i wasn't sorry to see starz go because the presentation was trash.

Basically Blockbuster had to do everything wrong to not crush netflix and damn if they didn't do everything wrong.

From not buying netflix for peanuts when it had the chance, to not taking netflix up on allowing netflix to run their online presence to at the moment netflix was turning out to be a threat and the future they hire a CEO whose last job was running brick and mortar 7/11s. SMH
