"sorry sorry sorry I know others have asked this but"

is there a consensus on the right netflix plan? My first impulse was to just go with the least expensive one but then I thought I should ask you all first.

Because my next impulse was the 2 dvd at a time, unlimited rentals one.

But that's, you know, fifteen bucks a month or some shit.

But they do have all the Mads Mikkelsen films.

I see the hunter has become the hunted!

Really though, three at a time works for me. At $18 a month I average about 10 movies a month and if one or two are slowed by mail I always have at least one to watch.

I've been boycotting them for years but it never meant anything before. Now, my rental dollars are specifically being directed ELSEWHERE.

Why? Because the chain was purchased by some fundamentalist something and they stopped carrying porn. I don't even rent porn, but I support my brothers and sisters who do.

I loved it, and would have kept it, but my wife felt like there was too much pressure (from me) to watch them and get them back in the mail.

We cut back to two at a time, one for just me (that I watch immediately and put back in the mail), and one we watch together. This is working out pretty well for us.

but then I got cable and have been working a lot so the same movies have been gathering dust on top of my TV. Then again, when getting TV shows, I like having the bigger plan because I can get pretty much the whole season in one fell swoop.

But I agree with Kurly Swirl that going for 3 as a trial run is the best option.

It's great...right now I'm not watching many movies because I've been busy with other things, but my local video store is about $4.25 a rental now...so if I watch more than 5 movies a month, I'm in the money. That happens easily...plus, I like the queue. It helps me make sure I see movies that I've been wanting to see for a while, but forget about all the time when I'm in the store.

Just one man's opinion. Oh yeah, eff Blockbuster too.

Of course, you do have to watch it within a certain amount of days or get fined.

Greencine has porn; close to where you live (I think); and delivers CDs within cardboard protectors so the chance of a broken disc goes down tremendously (I notice King Friday has awful luck with broken DVDs from Netflix).

If you live in an area where either Netflix or Greencine has high turnover (you get your next DVD quicker than other people in other areas), the 1-at-a-time unlimited plan is okay.

But my test case was Mads Mikkelsen. I ran a search and Greencine said WTF? and Netflix gave me a list of movies.

Neither has King's Game, though. I'm disappointed and freaked out. lol

though you've probably seen them already.

It's best to use the Advanced Search function. You probably used the basic search for Mikkelsen which did say, "no titles found," but if you look at the uppermost box, there is a hyperlink to Mads Mikkelsen which leads to the movie list. Advanced Search shows that movie list right away.

But, right now, yep, Netflix has GC beat on Danish movies.

They have those 2, but I'm not sure if their tv dvd collection is better than NF.

GC also has an online watch function (more expansive for their adult section; their movie selection for the online option wasn't too good the last time I checked).

Yeah, they do. The thing to remember about GreenCine, though, is even though they may have an extensive *selection*, there's a good chance you'll have to wait awhile for some titles because they don't have nearly the inventory that Netflix has. I mean, I waited for Before Sunrise and The Big Lebowski so long I finally broke down and bought them. That was about the time I decided to add Netflix to the mix.

This whole thing is pretty exciting for all of us. Boo sits on my lap and watches (no sound b/c I use earphones). He was mad he couldn't climb on top of it, though. Flat screen, too thin.

Yeah. However, there could be a way around it. There's a site that lists region free hacks for a bunch of different DVD players. I think it's www.videohelp.com.

actually the first thing in my queue is 6 Ft. Under. lol You TV heads have really done a number on me.

Did I tell you about when my Alexander teacher was watching that show? She showed up for my lesson a couple of weeks in a row really spacy. The first time she apologized and said that she and her boyfriend had been watching the show nonstop for like two days, and it was kind of making her weird. The second time she was grim and determined to finish the thing and just get past it. lol

i hear the sequels are actually better, but the first one disgusted me so much i can't even be bothered.

I don't know yet. I haven't seen it.

If I don't like it, I can stop the dvd player and eject it, right? You don't actually have to wait to the end of the dvd, do you?

Hey how come there's no timer on these things?

Hmm...some DVD players allow you to set your display to show, instead of the clock (current time, duh), the elapsed time or how much time is left. Did you check your manual?

I left the unit in the box for like 24 hours while I studied the manual and then finally said, fuck it, I'm not going to get it until I play with it for a while.

But the remote doesn't have any kind of "time" button on it as far as I can see.

Maybe I just bought the cheapest 16X9 aspect ration tv/dvd player that exists. Well, I mean, in fact I DID buy the cheapest one that exists, lol. So why am I complaining?

Try going to the manufacturer's website. Sometimes they have manuals available to download.

Does it have a "display" button?

They are. Pusher II is by far the best. Is it a coincidence that this is also the one that focuses on Mads' character? I think not.

I really learned my lesson this weekend. I was watching a movie, using earphones (the super deluxe expensive ones I bought for my mp3 player), eating dinner, and trying to keep the cat off my plate and off the earphone wire, and the earphone wire off my plate, and the earbuds in my ear all at once. I needed four arms.

But I finally got to see Angels In America.

I more or less decided to do it in December, but just had to wait until the finances made sense.

Probably the final straws were two: First, realizing that until I bought a dvd player, I would never see Angels in America. Second, finding out that Mads Mikkelsen was in Casino Royale only maybe a week after Casino Royale left the movie theatres. That just killed me.

39. "I loved it. I think Kushner is some kind of fuckin genius"
In response to Reply # 38

Now, that said, I watched it knowing that others didn't like it so well. But I knew it was originally a stage play, and I watched it thinking about what my reaction would have been had I seen it on stage and regretting that I was such an idiot that I missed it when it was in the theatres (particularly because I skipped it on the theory that if it was that popular, it couldn't be that good). I think that Kushner writes for the stage and not the big screen, and I think this would not have worked in a movie theatre, so it was a good choice for HBO.

I've been trying to articulate the difference between writing for movies and writing for the stage recently, because of this, and I've found it very very difficult.

I think one thing is that the audience for a stage play is much more comfortable with the willful suspension of disbelief. We have conventions in movies that, if violated, will make a moviegoer say, oh no, that's not real. But that doesn't really happen on stage. And so Kushner's incredible writing sounds right to me on stage and in this film of the stage play (obviously not a film of a play but as far as I can tell, the script was totally unaltered -- the only real difference was the sets), but I doubt that he could write for movies.

Contra, David Mamet, whose writing seems to work in both mediums. It seems strange to me that this should be so; perhaps it's because Mamet is in fact the more surreal writer in the respect that when you look at the dialogue he writes it's nonsense and it only takes on meaning when you hear it chattered really fast? I don't know.

Have you seen Caroline or Change? That was seriously one of the five best theatrical experiences of. my. life.

but there is also the fact that our tastes, while generally similar, are not exactly the same. And it would be pretty galling to use one of the two movies for something that I don't really wanna see on a regular basis. And we don't always have to watch the movies together, there'll be a night when she's working late or I have to work on something. I figure this way, 1 for me, 1 for her, and 1 that we could both live with watching, at all times. Plus I'll go from paying $15/month to paying $9/month, since now I'll have someone to split it with.
