I'm charging Steven Spielberg with failure to obey OE's request for character
development.


If your protagonist doesn't have a real character, than his/her actions are nothing
but random ass occurences, and I don't feel for him/her at all. Your film then descends
into a series of cool things happening to a crash test dummy.


Remake this shit into a 'Blown Away' type action movie, and call it a night.


No excuses, Spielberg. Granted, Tom Hanks is a much better actor, but his lead in
'Saving Private Ryan' was thrice as developed with less screen time.

Problem is, he don't seem to be willing or able to take the chances that great filmamkers will take to make great films.

Ya boy constantly remakes 50's era morality plays with a lotta flash and gloss, and try and pass'em off as great. Thing is, most americans lives are very much beyond the leave it to beaver ass shit speilberg makes.

Ain't nothin wrong with being a maker of films that are great entertainment, at all. Since he ain't got the stuff to make a Godfather or Apocalypse Now or Do The Right Thing, he should just go on 'head and be good at what he good at: making pretty, 50's kitshcy action flicks.

If anything, Apocalypse Now is an example of Coppola "tryin to be a 'great' director." And just because you take chances doesn't mean you end up with a good final product.

With what I said still in mind, I'm not mad at this analysis at all. Jaws, Jurassic Park, and Raiders of the Lost Ark would all be in my top five Speilberg movies, if not top three, and I think they fit, more or less, your description. But Hollywood gassed him up, only really gave him serious props when he did Schindler's List, and so now he thinks he has to be that serious director to get respect. (I haven't seen Terminal though and am still holding out on the direction of the next Jurassic Park movie.)

I'm also not so sure I buy into this "he thinks he's a serious filmmaker" theory, either. One would think that if he's trying not to make those "non serious" projects anymore -- almost as if he's embarrassed by them and wishes to disassociate himself from them -- that he wouldn't even want his name to be associated with them, no? I mean, why would he put his Executive Producer name on projects such as Monster House and the Jurassic Park sequels? One could argue that if he weren't trying to be a "serious" filmmaker that he would actually DIRECT said projects, but I actually believe that he picks projects that will challenge him, not necessarily because he's trying to gain respect. Or, can it just be that making the so-called blockbusters bores him to tears?

Also, Munich was my top film of last year.

I think Munich is the closest he's gotten to "balance" in his so-called "serious" movies... but I attribute that more to Tony Kushner and Eric Roth's writing than Spielberg. And again, I don't find serious fault with the way the guy infuses certain emotional things into his movies...

I'd say he took a pretty big chance w/ that sex scene towards the end of the flick. And like you mentioned earlier, doesnt always work out well & certainly didnt in this flick.

I liked the radio scene. I always like a few moments of subtle comic relief in a somewhat strenuous film like Munich was.

Minority Report, War of the World and Munich. I really don't believe filmmaking gets much better.

no character development? Avram goes from gung-ho Israeli super-trooper to paranoid refusenik living in exile in Brooklyn. he becomes a completely different person as a direct result of the toll his actions take on his character.

I mean it's one thing if you don't like the actor (although Keanu comparisons are ridiculous) but I don't understand how you can come to the conclusion that his actions are nothing but random occurences that bring about no character development. that was the least of the problems with the movie.

OE breakdown time:

If the beginning of the Movie is (A) and the end of the movie is (Z),
I define character development as (A) - (H), such that the events that occur
in (H) through (Z), which include the climax, are intriguing.

That's what this film misses imo

...I fall asleep on just about every dvd I watch these days. Has nothing to do with the quality of the film.

As for "Munich", I thought it was pretty good for the most part. I wouldn't call it boring in the least. I think the ending wasn't what I thought it should have been, but overall there were some strong performances, the story was as interesting as it could have been and it was I thought the action sequences were filled with a level of tension that most movies can't conjure.
