The romantic comedy audience is possibly the most fickle in existence.

Case in point: a rom-com by Cameron Crowe starring Orlando Bloom is one of the year's biggest flops.

Pirates of the Caribbean was more Depp and Knightley, Lord of the Rings was its own thing.

Though I haven't been especially impressed with his acting chops so far, I should see that movie at some point, it got some decent reviews.

Naw I hadnt been impressed w/ the chops 1 bit up until this flick. And he's not overwhelmingly good in it or anything by any means. But its just the perfect role 4 him & he handles it quite well.

the only movies he's been decent in are The Lord of the Ring series and the straight guy to Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean!

he's just doesn't have the STUFF to be a leading man, Kingdom of Heaven was a giant bomb because he isn't OLD enough to be the main man. LOOKS don't mean a movie is gonna be a hit.

I'm thinking that her fiancee died before their wedding and for some reason she falls for the dude from Las Vegas.

On the bright side, judging from the latest films, Garner and Affleck will both be having a lot of time on their hands to spend with their kid.

you're right. only a true cynic would criticize film making of this magnitude. i must truly be a cold and heartless human being.

everyone else in this thread recognizes this post for what it is. harmelss teasing of what appears to be a shitty movie. which, of course, is done on this board all the time.

I write reality shows. And making a chimp write it would be cruelty to animals. If you can't stand reality, imagine having to sift through the boring/annoying footage to find the more watchable stuff.

My first reaction when I saw the post title was to say that it is hard to write a good romantic-comedy. But then I saw the trailer and thought, wow that was a special one. It seemed like there was a voiceover track missing. The second worst trailer since the random Dirty Love clip that was tossed around like a pseudo-trailer. Still, this does smack of the Hollywood Insider's Club. The writer (Susannah Grant) has done Party of Five, Pocahontas, Ever After, and Erin Brockovich so she has at least two or three bombs that she can drop before people stop buying her scripts. Check that, she'll probably still sell them but they'll never get made.

And is it me or does it look like Juliette Lewis just stumbled onto the set and wasn't really acting in those scenes.

who said i was posting on an internet message board to help me achieve what i desire? i know exactly what i want to do, and exactly what i have to do to get there. trust me, ripping on this shitty movie and poking a little fun at a dangerously moribund genre isn't going to prevent me from accomplishing my career goals.

currently on this board are the following posts:

Don't waste your time or money on Narnia
The Brown Bunny gave me cancer
Anyone seeing Syriana lower your expectations
Can someone explain Uwe Bowl to me
Why didn't y'all tell me Roll Bounce sucked
I hate Chris Kattan

i'll assume you're on your way to tell Frank & PlanetInfinite how they're mirthless too?

>It's like picking on the
>handicapped.

it's absolutely nothing like picking on the handicapped. what it is like, and all it is, is poking fun at a movie that looks like it will be really bad.

One of said persons actually tried to explain "Walk With Me" (with Mandy Moore) was a progressive, challenging film for its thematic content.

I don't know what to say to people like this, except, "No -- you're wrong."

In response to Reply # 0

personally i like the sweetest thing (to a degree). i thought 50 first dates was pretty good.

other than that i'm hardpressed to name any romantic comedies i've even seen in the last few years. i'm lucky, my girlfriend is a movie buff like me: she loves horror, foreign films, action films, dramas, documentaries. comedies may be her LEAST favorite although she loves proper romances (mostly period dramas though).

In response to Reply # 49

but i guess that could be argued. if so, that's the best one i've seen in the last few years.

High Fidelity is good, too, and definitely a trademark cusask romcom but in my head it's a music movie.

i don't consider Amelie a romcom AT ALL. that's one of my favorite movies. it's romantic but there's no way it belongs with these other movies.

i'll have to check out Intermission.

Teaching the Ape to Write Poems

They didn't have much trouble
teaching the ape to write poems:
first they strapped him into the chair,
then tied the pencil around his hand
(the paper had already been nailed down).
Then Dr. Bluespire leaned over his shoulder
and whispered into his ear:
"You look like a god sitting there.
Why don't you try writing something?"

-- James Tate

writing a script is the easiest part of the entire process. writing a good one. getting an agent. getting it sold. all that shit is where the difficulty comes in.

We all have secrets.

High-powered corporate officer Clyde D. Orangutan has his.

When Orangutan suddenly rips the arm off an account executive during a meeting, runs away screeching, and disappears never to be seen again, his friends and co-workers get suspicious. Could it be that the good humored man they all knew and loved wasn't who they assumed he was?

Rachel McAdams and Clayton Watson star as Ashley McSipple and Cobb Dursal, two temp workers who take it upon themselves to peel away the intricate layers of the fragile facade forged by Clyde D. Orangutan. Few clues are offered when McSipple and Durshal interview his closest friends, golf buddies, and wife & two kids. A man of few words, Orangutan's carefully crafted wall of affability and charisma witholds the truth.

That is until a cryptic phone call traced back to the World Wildlife Fund is received, prompting a look at the company's charitable contributions list and payroll - Just how far up does this secret go?

1) good comedian writes a post venting steam that the mundane shit that dominates the entertainment industry and that we all hate is making his goal of actually doing something worthwhile a lot harder to achieve.

2) haters enter the post two seconds later, saying shit like, "if you're so fucking smart, write one yourself!!" then they go back to complaining about having to watch the mundane shit and, of course, complaining about it.

i like one of these steps. can you guess which?
