It can be a bad film or a good film, it just has to based on a good play. I have a good list already but I feel like I'm missing a bunch of great ones.

These are all plays that were filmed, but if you're interested in seeing three of the best, if not THE THREE BEST contemporary musicals there are done with absolutely wonderful performances by Bernadette Peters, Mandy Patinkin, Angela Lansbury, Joanna Gleason, George Hearn, and Brent Spiner among others, these are ABSOLUTELY worth seeing.
Sunday in the Park With George and Sweeney Todd are in my humble opinion the two best musicals ever written.

38. "Little Shop of Horrors" In response to Reply # 0
It is based on a film (the Roger Corman one), but the play is great. Also, I think the film is grossly underrated in the pantheon of musicals brought to film.
41. "Who Has Seen The Wind" In response to Reply # 0
I mentioned it above, but I think it deserves its own post. One of my favorite films based on a play. Watch it you have the chance. Allan King did a great job with the piece and Gordon Pinsent gives one of his many great performances. I heard W.O. Mitchell didn't like the film, but W.O. Mitchell hardly liked anything.

42. "Finding Neverland (the play's written by a really nice guy)" In response to Reply # 0
I ran into him because I was doing a musical next door to where Little Women: The Musical was being tested, and he had written the book. He was upset, because it was evident the play wasn't going to work, but he was contractually obligated to keep making rewrites and hope it all worked out. It ended up bombing, and I can't say I don't know why.
But he's a nice guy, and the play Finding Neverland is based on is a nice little whimsical play.
