From what I understand it's supposedly Pynchon-lite, but I thought it was fantastic. Really funny, and of course excellent writing. I'm interested to see if PTA can translate Pynchon's sense of humor to the movie. I think PTA can do funny, but zany Pychon-funny could be a challenge.

Yeah I may need to read this one, especially since you described it as P-lite.

I've read "V" and really enjoyed it. Gave up on "Gravity's Rainbow" ... twice. First time I made it about 100 pages, second go 'round I made it halfway. His dense stream of consciousness style requires very careful attention and I just lost concentration after awhile.

And I understand completely why.

Most of this doesn't make sense, but I was laughing my ass off through most it.

Can't wait to see it again as there is lots to digest here. Lots. And for those who are gonna peep this and then read the book, from what everyone said during the Q&A the book WILL NOT help you understand it, as Anderson did a straight adaptation for the most part.

It can best described it as a stoner noir set in 1970, one that isn't actually that interested in the solving of the case at hand.

And I'm not so sure that P.T. Anderson's telling the truth about how the novel won't help those who wish to read it before they see this, though I think he's talking thematically, since the plot points are lifted almost directly from the book (though the ending is tweaked), which itself was pretty dense, plot-wise, which apparently is a Pynchon thing (this was the first book of his that I've read). Hmm, maybe that's why he said what he said.

*shrugs*

Anyway, fun performances from Joaquin, Josh Brolin, and Katherine Waterston. There's a scene with Joaquin and Waterston that unfortunately might launch more than a few think pieces, but frankly, fuck that shit in advance. Reese Witherspoon, Benecio Del Toro, Owen Wilson and Eric Roberts have a few scenes. And if you blink you'll miss Michael K. Williams and Maya, but whatever. Also, Martin Short's up in this piece, snorting coke and whatnot.

Lots of weed, more than a few naughty sight gags, lots of sunshine and melancholy vibes and long hair and stuff. Oh, and another special Jonny Greenwood score and a cool soundtrack.

This won't be everyone's cup of tea, especially clocking in at 2 and a half hours. But I was entertained by the overall vibe of it, and found that P.T. Anderson wears the lighter tone well. The movie's like a spiritual cousin of sorts to Boogie Nights, BUT DON'T GET EXCITED WHEN YOU READ THAT, it's not Boogie Nights The Remix, they're only similar in tone and theme (lamenting the so-called lost innocence of back in the day).

And it's also interesting to me, from a filmmaking standpoint, how much P.T. Anderson has evolved since Boogie Nights. I mean, the Scorsese "homages" that he was known for, where there's a lot of quick dollies and zooms and cuts, are pretty much gone, replaced by much slower dollies and tracking shots, and scenes that take their time to unfold. I don't miss the old P.T. Anderson at all, especially when he makes good shit like this.

This will be another divisive PTA film and it definitely will struggle with comparisons to Big Lebowski.

It was undoubtedly funny at times and I didn't mind the convoluted plot as much as I found the lack of stakes to kind of take the momentum out of the proceedings. I didn't feel like Shasta was enough of a driving force. It also felt like an adaptation that bit off more than it could chew. Most notably, the relationship between Doc and Bigfoot never felt established all that well.

I can't say that I disliked it but it was one of those films that ended and I just felt, "Ok. So that happened."

Which itself is a very weirdly unique blend of comedy, noir, mystery, nostalgia, melancholy, social commentary, etc.

It's less self-consciously "difficult" than The Master by a mile, but as some have pointed out, the plot might be considered fairly confusing by those who haven't read the book. I read it, and was able to follow it here fine (it's not exactly crystal clear in the book, either). With that said, I don't think Pynchon or Anderson give a shit about the plot as much as they do in recreating the vibe and atmosphere of an important turning point in American culture.

The tone here is a lot lighter than Robert Altman's The Long Goodbye, but knowing that PTA is a huge Altman disciple, it had to be in his mind when he made this. (TLG is streaming on Netflix Instant, btw, and also just got a decent blu-ray release in late November.) While the two movies have pretty different overall feels, I think everything Ebert wrote here in his Great Movies review of The Long Goodbye applies almost perfectly to Inherent Vice:

----------
Certainly the plot of “The Long Goodbye” is a labyrinth not easily negotiated. Chandler’s 1953 novel leads Marlowe into a web of deception so complex you could call it arbitrary. The book is not about a story but about the code of a private eye in a corrupt world. It is all about mood, personal style, and language.

The plot can be summarized in a few words, or endlessly.

I don’t think the answer to that question (of plot) concerns Altman nearly as much as the look and feel of the film. He wants to show a private eye from the noir era blundering through a plot he is perhaps too naive to understand.

“The Long Goodbye” should not be anybody’s first film noir, nor their first Altman movie. Most of its effect comes from the way it pushes against the genre, and the way Altman undermines the premise of all private eye movies, which is that the hero can walk down mean streets, see clearly, and tell right from wrong. The man of honor from 1953 is lost in the hazy narcissism of 1973, and it’s not all right with him.
---------------

I also don't think The Big Lebowski is a great comparison either, as that's very much more a pure comedy, where this isn't. I think the trailer overplays the slapstick element a bit. There's some of that, but not a ton.

Whatever. As has been noted, not everyone will like this, but I was extremely entertained. This thing was gorgeous to look at. Great music throughout, both by Greenwood and in the soundtrack song selections. I agree wholeheartedly with Zoo about the evolution of PTA's style. It's really refined right now. His camera still moves around a lot but now it's VERY SLOWLY and with subtlety. A lot of these shots are pretty long takes that you don't even really notice are long takes. Acting was strong across the board, with Brolin stealing most of his scenes.

This is probably top 5 of the year for me right now (though I've yet to see a number of noteworthy releases...)

Also in the Dome in 70

Blown up print, which means it was most likely shot in 35 then expanded to 65

And I went and saw that shit.

The difference between the two is palpable, most notably in a scene where Joaquin Phoenix and Owen Wilson are sitting at a table, talking. In the first print I saw, I remember there being a slow dolly in as the scene plays. In the 70mm version I saw, the scene starts tighter on them and the camera doesn't move. Felt unnatural as shit.

The movie as a whole is still gloriously and wonderfully weird, and definitely worth seeing if you're curious, but I'd say, unlike The Master, you don't have to drop everything and make your way to see a 70 print...

It's only mildly funny, no action, no suspense, no interesting dialogue, nothing...just a series of boring conversations amongst boring characters. I have no idea who the intended audience is supposed to be...I feel like this is something only PTA wanted to do and didn't give a shit who would watch it. People who worship him will try to tell you it's "great" though I'm sure.

And this is coming from someone who thought The Master was a GREAT film...I loved it. This is a pile of shit though.

PTA seems to be getting increasingly defiant in his unwillingness to pander to general audiences, or even appeal to them. Boogie Nights is still his most accessible movie IMO. Inherent Vice is not going to go over well with most casual audiences. You asked about the target audience...it's pretty much hardcore PTA fans and/or hardcore Pynchon fans. I can't see it getting a lot of love outside of that. I personally dug the shit out of it though. Feels extremely confident and assured.

I really didn't find many things funny, and the cameos did nothing to add flavor to the film

i never felt the "great" tension between Phoenix and Brolin's characters

if it was supposed to be warped Noir, the "case" was so abstracted, I was never invested in the stakes of the lives in the film's world

also, there is nothing that can hold a candle to the jail cell scene from The Master in Inherent Vice, or the chemistry Amy and PCH had, or the beautiful shots within the Master

y'all keep saying this was beautifully shot, but where? which scenes. For a PTA film, and dude WAS my contemporary GOAT, everything felt so pushed up against the frame and not hallucinogenic ENOUGH for the dearth of the 70s.

real talk, i fought with every molecule in my body to not leave the last 45min. My girl was UPSET yo, lofl

Structurally, tonally, thematically, all of it comes to surface a bit more on second viewing. This thing feels sprawling but it's actually pretty tightly constructed. I laughed out loud a lot more this time around, too, and it became crystal clear what a really awesome, CONTROLLED performance Phoenix gives.

Yup, second viewing confirmed it's a great movie. I'm betting a good chunk of y'all who didn't like it will come around in a few years...

am totally getting P-DL feels from this, in terms of it's gonna need a bit more digesting and repeat viewings to fully appreciate. or more just to get in tune with the rhythm of the film.
i understood most of it...i think lol.
even with less than half of understanding plot-wise, i still enjoyed the crap out of this.
i was pretty baked for most of it in anticipation of matching Doc's mindstate for most of the film. needless to say, i think i dipped for a minute or two near the end, cos when i focused again, Bigfoot was gulping down an entire messload of bud lol.

I'm thinking the book was probably far superior.. enjoyed the film don't get me wrong.. but the narrative and the overall craziness I'm guessing translate better in the book...

I did have to look up the one character on IMDB though... ahhhh of course that's who it was.

there's just a point where it's very, very hard to put forth how tough to follow and stoned this story actually is. I wouldn't even say Pynchon nails how a stoned out of their mind detective would see the world, and I haven't read any of his other stuff but I've been told this is one his tamer works, which is...something to reckon with.

I have only read Gravity's Rainbow; my dad has read all of his stuff and said Inherent Vice was meandering, verbose and confusing even by Pynchon standards. So...the movie may have actually made more sense.

The movie is actually a lot more straightforward than it seems, especially the second time though. It's actually fairly tight. It could have very easily spun out of control, but the second viewing makes it really clear that PTA had a firm grasp on it the whole time.

The book, on the other hand, really is pretty free-wheeling, and I don't have the time or inclination to re-read the whole thing all over again just to get a fresh look at it.

The book is really confusing. The plot doesn't add up and, compared to the movie, it has way more elements. A vegas section and a whole plotline about some guy inventing the internet (I think?).

I wanted to like it. i tried to force myself to like it. i just remember thinking thank god it's almost over only to find out there was over an hour left.

i didn't care about anyone or anything that was happening. it would have been more interesting on mute.

Shit was bizarro Lebowski

with that cast, too. it's visually fantastic... it's set in LA in the 70s. i'm kinda fascinated how all these ingredients could result in such a terrible movie.

You were referencing Lebowski and shit earlier. Sounds to me like the trailers/TV spots just really mislead you as to what the movie was going to be, so that disconnect was what made you not like it. It's not really Lebowski-ish at all (except on the most basic level of "stoner L.A. neo-noir) and it's not really supposed to be.

Once you settle in and watch it on its own terms, it's really great. Frank's right. I haven't see it 8 times (!) but I've seen it 3 and I too have liked it substantially more each time. Especially if you're a borderline PTA fanboy, you're going to come around on this...

Enjoyed it more each time and just started reading the book. PTA did an excellent job with the adaptation and captured the mood of 'the end of an era' quite well. I've been listening to the soundtrack a lot too, that "Journey Through The Past" version that I think they unearthed from Neil Young's vaults is great and was used beautifully in the film.

One of the more enjoyable films for me of the past 5 years, I'm surprised to hear others found it to be such a chore. The 3 hours have gone by quickly when I watched it.
