"RUSSELL CROWE >>> JOHNNY DEPP (MASTER AND COMMANDER post)"

Welcome to OE's NEW AGENDA:

RAMPANT HETEROPHOBIA IN the film crowd

That's right: HETEROPHOBIA <---watch

MASTER AND COMMANDER >>>> PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN

RUSSELL CROWE >>>> JOHNNY DEPP

In general, I mean.

Not sure why y'all artsy fartsies don't give Russell Crowe
his due, though

I know...he's a tad bit too red blooded for y'all. He be
fuckin bitches and punching white executives in the teeth.

He is Australian, though, which makes him gay-er than most
Americans, meaning y'all should give the man his respect.

Odd, then, how y'all let Johnny Depp get away with making
movies based on AMUSEMENT PARK RIDES, and STILL he gets the
artsy pass.

But back to the topic at hand (c) Mega Montana

MASTER AND COMMANDER was one of the best films of the decade.

Receives almost NOOOOOO critical acclaim from the Lattes.

Why no Latte for MASTER AND COMMANDER?

FASCINATING setting.

Interesting protagonist.

The skinny blonde nigga who was the doctor was good too.

The little kids was good up in that piece.

Had DRAMA and ACTION.

QUOTES and ONE-LINERS

Like I said: Y'all just mad Russell Crowe only likes vagina.
Y'all let Denzel get away with not liking dick, but that's
because he black.

STOP discriminating.

Artsies gotta stop this HETERO-PHOBIA

CRY, CRY BABY CRYYYY (c) That bully from 'Christmas Story'

I don't enjoy making lists, so I didn't participate in that thread, but if I had I probably would have overlooked it. Although I certainly wouldn't have awarded anything Johnny Depp made last decade. And I definitely wouldn't have overlooked The Insider.

I agree with pretty much all your statements about Russell Crowe, except pretending that people don't like him around here. And I thought Cinderella Man was a really good movie, thanks to him.

i still enjoy the way he whooped ass in Gladiator, but my ex-girl ruined A Beautiful Mind for me, the way she cracked on his overly brooding schizo intellectual, i can't watch that shit without it makin me laugh. than he kind of repeated the performance in American Gangster, a flick i'm not a fan of. I haven't seen Master & Commander, but i'll check it out.

Russell Crowe is perhaps the last white MAN who is a movie star. Who else is a bonafide movie star in white Hollywood that you think could kick a guy's ass in a bar? Who else is a bonafide movie star in white Hollywood that you think could go to a bar and drink your pansy ass under a table? Who else is a bonafide movie star that actually doesn't seem like a feminine pretty boy (Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, etc.)? I could name older actors for days that I'd answer "yes" to these three questions... but nowadays these guys are rarities.

Note: I say white Hollywood since the majority of black movie stars are not feminine pretty boys. This problem doesn't seem to cross the racial boundary as much. I look forward to hearing the theories on why this is.

>Josh Brolin has come up because he has this appeal also. tuff

Yeah, there's a handful, but not very many. Harrison Ford
had this appeal. Eastwood certainly did. I think its a
generational thing. Metrosexualism really did wonders
for whiteboys....it hit everyone but REALLY hit white men.

I mean, Heath Ledger's sex appeal amongst WOMEN GREW FROM
PLAYING A HOMOSEXUAL. Just think about that for a second.
That would *never* happen with a black dude. Hell, Will
Smith still suffers from that little bit of gayness in
'Six Degrees'.

Gyllenhall has a little bit of the Crowe stuff, but he's still
has this uber intellectual Jewish kid swag to him that isn't
really very Russell-Crow like. Gyllenhall ain't fighting for
no broad.

Colin Farrell was supposed to have a little bit of it, but
that died with the Pony-Tail in 'Miami Vice'. LOL.

Yeah, well, I think that's a tad extreme, but I hear you.

I think black men's appeal is either *humor* or *control*

Will Smith is classically a "light" and "sensitive" actor, but
he's still 6'2, 210 and commands a screen.

Denzel might be the film textbook definition of a leading man,
white or black. Perhaps the best of all time.

Cheadle has a little bit of it...sorta...women appreciate his
intellect and talent. He's still put in roles where he's fairly
commanding, though.

I think the best example of this oddity is how Larenz Tate's
career hasn't taken off. He's diminutive and relatively
effeminate, which is why his career hasn't taken off. Black
women like him, but white women would rather fuck Denzel, which
is why he'll never be a true Hollywood leading man. He's
certainly talented enough.

The best bet is for lighter-skinned black men to pick the mantle,
sort of like Obama did, because the public bought the sensitive,
intellectual stuff from Obama...one of the reasons he's a
transformative figure(culturally, even if not politically).

He does? In what way? I'm not seeing it.

Cmon O! That died waaaaaaaaay before with Alexander!

He had the drinking & womanizing but never seemed like a tough guy even with that Irish blood. I think becoming a father of a child with a disability also softened him up a bit since then. His repsonse to the Gervais jab @ the Golden Globes kinda sealed this thinking for me.

I think it's more him being too convincing as O-Dogg. He probably scared a lot of white people after that role.

He doesn't really. I was kidding.

Gyllenhall is a physical imposing, bearded, gruff
whiteboy. He seems to understand what roles suit
him best and he does them well. He was outstanding
in 'Jarhead' for example. That's not for no Orlando
Bloom type of cat.

I still say, though, he doesn't quite have Russell
Crowe type of appeal. He is different.

Not mentioning 'Alexander' is a fundamental pillar of
my religious beliefs.

Plus, I just wanted to take a shot at that Pony-Tail

LOL

I don't think O-Dogg had anything to do with it.

Just think: Hollywood *tried* to push Larenz Tate's
general appeal on the world.

a) Love Jones - a cult hit, but again, broad audiences of
women don't liketo see short, effeminate black men writing
poetry and novels and shit. Didn't work that well.

They'd rather watch Denzel shout at people and take command.

*shrugs*

b) Why Do Fools Fall in Love - Again, broad audiences
of women don't want to see short, diminutive black men
singing and shit. They'd rather watch Tyrese than that
nigga.

So Hollywood actually *tried* and it just didn't work.

Yeah, because lord knows that the Fresh Prince made it because he was a man's man. And let's not even get into the fact that probably the second biggest bankable black star dresses up like a woman to make his money.

If Orlando Bloom is a "bonafide movie star", then so is Viggo Mortenson who I wouldn't say is just a pretty boy. Ditto for Clive Owen and Daniel Craig. Nic Cage might not kick ass but he's hardly a pretty boy. Personally, I don't think Matt Damon's a "feminine pretty boy". Sean Penn?

See: Eddie Murphy still being one of the 5 biggest
movie stars in history. Black men have always been
bankable when they're FUNNY.

And Will Smith is still a big nigga built like an
NFL running back. That is not Orlando Bloom appeal.

That is "I want to be fucked by an NFL running back"
appeal. You combine that with his HUMOR and you get a
mega star.

>Yeah, because lord knows that the Fresh Prince made it because
>he was a man's man.

His biggest hits are Independence Day and Men in Black
and shit like that. He was funny and cutesy in those,
no homo

Recently, Smith has switched it up and become
COMMANDING and SERIOUS and has played up his sex appeal.
Hell, there's damn near a naked scene with the nigga in
every movie.

>And let's not even get into the fact that
>probably the second biggest bankable black star dresses up

HUMOR, my dude

Oh, and:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23899112/

Black people LOVE TP. White moviegoers aren't
so into him, and the ones that are go because he's
FUNNY.

>If Orlando Bloom is a "bonafide movie star", then so is Viggo

I'm GLAD YOU BROUGHT THAT UP:

Bitches don't like Daniel Craig. Bitches loved Pierce Bronson
WAAAAAAAAYYYYY more.

Daniel Craig is a SEAN CONNERY STYLE James Bond, which is
from a DIFFERENT ERA.

Women would prefer a sissy ass ROGER MOORE James Bond now.

>Nic Cage might not kick ass but
>he's hardly a pretty boy. Personally, I don't think Matt
>Damon's a "feminine pretty boy". Sean Penn?

Matt Damon not a pretty boy?

LOL.

That about summarizes your handle on the situation.

LOL.

And Sean Penn:

a) Isn't that bankable

b) Is really from a different generation.

I literally don't get it. At all. Brosnan is such a Mary, yet girls fucking pick him over Daniel Craig any day of the week.

Daniel Craig and Clive Owen were two good examples of men's men. I was gonna bring up Craig as the exception in my original post. Then again, Craig hasn't opened a non-Bond film to date.

Where are the white American men's men? It seems every single one of these dudes comes from England or Australia. The pussification of this country is absolutely unreal.

I didn't realize you were such a tough guy, Frank.

Foreign tough guys usually have more sculpted faces and are prettier which is why casting agents go for them over American tough guys. And having worked at a casting office for a stint when I first moved out here, I can tell you that there's also a bias; tough foreigners are "sexy" whereas tough Americans remind casting people of the guys who made fun of them when they were growing up.

I'm not saying that it's right. I'm explaining to Frank why Americans aren't as prevalent. I have a few friends who could handle some of these roles but they almost always lose them out to foreign actors.

To say that the representation of American men in Hollywood = the pussification of the country is yet another braindead argument on Frank's part.

You don't think this country has gotten pussified? I know that this is more of a social psychology discussion than an actual cinema discussion, but I believe it's true. I don't have to be a rugged tough man to recognize it. Nice job attempting to have snark stand in for a valid point, however. It's just a personal opinion and it has nothing to do with my original point that I made, which, while you have found a couple of valid exceptions that I acknowledged, is still predominantly factual.

I think O_E's doing a good job of breaking it down, actually.

You've named a couple of actors who Hollywood has pushed but who have not proven to be bankable leading men.

You've then also pointed out that many "tough guys" are foreigners and, as I've stated, that has more to do with casting than the direction of this nation.

So far, OE's argument is that there aren't a lot of black leading men and even though one of the two preeminent leading men came up as an effeminate pretty boy he was funny so that doesn't count (which would then discount Johnny Depp whose leap to the A-list was the comical Jack Sparrow). So basically because Hollywood has tried and failed to make Orlando Bloom, Jake Gylenhall, Colin Farrell, etc. into bankable leading men and failed, then white people love effeminate leading men.

That's your point. Well, that and, when I was your age, we were MEN!

Frank said that white stars were almost all effeminate pretty boys and that that doesn't carry over to black stars. That statement is patently false.

>And Will Smith is still a big nigga built like an
>NFL running back. That is not Orlando Bloom appeal.

When he was coming up, Will was not built like that. He was no more of a man's man than Damon, Pitt, or even little ass Tom Cruise; a point that you yourself made...

>His biggest hits are Independence Day and Men in Black
>and shit like that. He was funny and cutesy in those,
>no homo

Exactly my point. He wasn't built like a running back in those. I'm not sure how you can argue that he wasn't an effeminate pretty boy when you can't even compliment his roles without a "no homo".

>Black people LOVE TP. White moviegoers aren't
>so into him, and the ones that are go because he's
>FUNNY.

Again, exactly my point. Trying to say that white people want their leading men effeminate while ignoring that some of the biggest box office successes for black actors have them dressing up like women (don't forget Martin Lawrence) is laughable.

>Bitches don't like Daniel Craig. Bitches loved Pierce Bronson
>WAAAAAAAAYYYYY more.

This isn't about what bitches like. Not sure why you're mentioning this. Again, I'm addressing Frank's comment, which was based on race, not gender.

>Matt Damon not a pretty boy?
>
>LOL.

No more a pretty boy than Columbus Short, Terrence Howard, or any other up and coming black actor?

>And Sean Penn:
>
>a) Isn't that bankable

Well, shit. Neither is Orlando Bloom. He's dropped from Pirates and nobody went to see LOTR because of him. There's a reason that he's disappeared from the radar after dropping bomb after bomb. Neither is Cheadle, who you've brought up before.

Fam, just admit you wrong, because you not making any
sense right about not, quite honestly

>Frank said that white stars were almost all effeminate pretty
>boys and that that doesn't carry over to black stars. That
>statement is patently false.

LOL.

No, its not.

White LEADING MEN, not comedians, are far more likely to
be effeminate, sensitive metrosexuals than black men stars.

They also got the "thoughtful progressive" shit down pat
too.

I mean, I ain't even complaining. I'm just making an
OBSERVATION.

Will Smith's *early* appeal was damn near Jim Carry-like.

Like I said:

White people never had a problem running to the box office
to see a black man act FUNNY. They never had a problem
going to the box office to see a black man act COMMANDING.
Will Smith does *both*

>When he was coming up, Will was not built like that. He was no
>more of a man's man than Damon, Pitt, or even little ass Tom
>Cruise; a point that you yourself made...

No, Einstein, he was FUNNY. That's why 'Fresh Prince'
was such a big deal.

Black men have always been FUNNY.

Again - what Will Smith did was COMBINE elements of
Eddie Murphy with elements of Denzel Washington. That's
why he's a mega star.

He makes people SMILE and makes girls nipples hard.

>Exactly my point. He wasn't built like a running back in
>those. I'm not sure how you can argue that he wasn't an
>effeminate pretty boy when you can't even compliment his roles
>without a "no homo".

Actually, by the time 'Bad Boys' rolled around, Smith was of
age and had embraced his sex appeal. The thing is: he was
also FUNNY which is why he was picked for those rolls at all.
His silly smiles and one-lines. Like I said -- niggas always
been FUNNY. Always. And always been bankable.

>Again, exactly my point. Trying to say that white people want
>their leading men effeminate while ignoring that some of the
>biggest box office successes for black actors have them

LOL.

No, smart guy. Black people have always been bankable when
they are FUNNY.

>No more a pretty boy than Columbus Short, Terrence Howard, or
>any other up and coming black actor?

LOL.

Are you fucking serious?

Do you honestly think that Matt Damon is not a pretty boy?
Damon's WHOLE APPEAL consists of the following:

a) He's harvard educated smartsy white boy
b) He has boyish good looks

As he ages, his appeal is growing from teenie bopper to
George Clooney, but NEITHER of those appeals are *anything*
like Terrance Howard...LOL...seriously, FOH. Howard is a
commanding stage presence who actually takes on fairly DARK
and SARCASTIC roles. His LONE LEADING ROLE that made noise
was the nigga as a PIMP FOR FUCK'S SAKE <--haha. The nigga
don't have no leading roles in films that white people watched
where he was on some cerebral thoughtful shit...LOL...FOH

And?

Will doesn't fit the bill anymore than Matt Damon does. Will made it as a pretty boy that people could take home to mom just like Damon did and both have bulked up. If Will somehow transcended his pretty boy image than so did Damon.

Who is the black Jason Statham?

You can keep copping pleas but Frank's point is just wrong.

LOL. No, he didn't.

Sorry. Damon plays progressive rugby players who are
friends with Nelson Mandela.

Smith is playing crazy virologists who shoot zombies.
Or anti-heroes who blow things up.

They don't do the same type of movie, because their
appeal is different. Cry all you want to. Its true.

Damon might have "bulked up" but his appeal is still more
"Aww, he's so smart and thoughtful"
than it is "He'll fuck a nigga up" OR "He's funny."

Hell, even in the BOURNE series, his appeal was that he
didn't *look* like a badass. That's he was perfect. He looked
like a lost puppy whiteboy. That's WHY the Bourne series
worked. If he looked like an NFL Running back, the role
wouldn't have worked as well.

The funny/commanding plea cop is even better. That eliminates 90% of ALL actors. And one of the two black leading men made his film debut by playing a gay guy and built his fan base as a funny pretty boy. Thanks for playing.

Oh please. That's like saying Brad Pitt isn't a pretty boy because he played Tyler Durden.

Yes it could have. Make Bourne with Wesley Snipes and it still would have worked. Hell, I honestly don't think Bourne is that far off from Smith's character in I Am Legend.

90's Era Snipes could have done a Bourne film. And Will's character in I Am Legend was a sensitive scientist thrust into action; just as lost as Bourne was in Bourne Identity.

You literally have no point. Will doesn't fit your example of a "man's man" and you've admitted to not having any other examples.

So I'm just going to skip all the Depp agenda stuff.

But yeah, I'm really flummoxed why M&C doesn't get it's due. It's indeed one of the better films of the '00s, and certainly one of the best "action" flicks (though there's only two real battle scenes). Crowe handled his biz, and played a fairly complex character well. And Beattany came ill with it too as the doctor. It's weird that I never even see it on HBO or anything either. Shit just got forgotten.

It's a shame that they never made a sequel or two (it's based on a faitly popular series of novels), but it was considered kind of a flop when it came out. Ah well, maybe Crowe can work his juice a little farther down the road.

I agree that "The Insider" is probably his best performace, though not by a mile. His performance in Master and Commander was comparable. And he was very, very, very good in "LA Confidential." I've also hear d he was excellent in "Romper Stomper," but I've never seen it.

I will say that Crowe pretty much owned the late '90s and early '00s as an actor. And it's odd to think that he got his Oscar for his most conventional role during that period.

on the one hand, you're holding hands with Ms. Rom-Com herself -- never a good look for the bare-chested murderer you're banking Gladiator on

but on the other hand, I can kinda see young Russel Crowe, in the lat '80s / early '90s, developing a little schoolboy crush on Meg, back when she was kinda legitimately Miss Thing in Hollywood, that exotic land where the streets are paved with milk and honey, home to all the most beautiful girls in the world, so when he finally crosses the pond and lands in Tinseltown, first order of business is to enjoy his newfound status and go ahead and achieve that middle school conquest plotted a decade ago.

either way, let's all be glad it's over -- both the romance AND Meg's career.

The only thing that would POSSIBLY hurt is Crowe's affinity for poetry. But a) I know lots of spoken word dudes that are gully, b) his affinity for poetry has lead to violence. Once, after receiving an acting award at some British Awards show, he got up on stage (obviously drunk) and started quoting Kipling. The producer cut him off mid-speech, so Crowe sought him out and slapped him around. That's sorta bad-ass.

year when the host made a joke about him fucking a lot of
bitches <---classic

>The only thing that would POSSIBLY hurt is Crowe's affinity
>for poetry. But a) I know lots of spoken word dudes that are
>gully,

Eh. Nah, this hurts his standing. I didn't even know this.

b) his affinity for poetry has lead to violence. Once,
>after receiving an acting award at some British Awards show,
>he got up on stage (obviously drunk) and started quoting
>Kipling. The producer cut him off mid-speech, so Crowe sought
>him out and slapped him around. That's sorta bad-ass.

Haha. THAT'S TRUE. Now I remember.

And Red Rock West. In fact, he's tougher in Kiss of Death than in either of the films you mentioned. He's a wimp who's in over his head for most of The Rock.

The reason that Cage gets hated more because his flops are high profile, mass marketed flicks whereas someone like Clooney shits the bed in smaller films that nobody sees and everyone quickly forget ever existed. Artsy fartsy types "respect" failing in indies and villify those who make stuff for the masses.

Nah, but 'The Rock' had more explosions and shit. And he
had a fine ass bitch

No, people forgive Clooney because Clooney is less of a
guys guy than Cage is.

Wrong. See: Deep, Johnny. Makes movies themed around
amusement park rides. Still loved by artsies. Why?
Because he's barely a guy. No other reason. Phobia.

45. "Just by skimming this post, this is a pretty horrible agenda"
In response to Reply # 0

Now I didn't delve into this whole post but by just skimming the reply titles it seems that people are talking about which action figures they have and which movie poster they look at for inspiration as they apply TAG body spray before they go out to the club with their 3 homeboys. So maybe some of these points have been expressed.

1.) I didn't know Russell Crowe and Johnny Depp were Actor Beefing.

2.) I've never seen Master and Commander. And don't plan on it. It seems pretty boring.

3.) Do people really not give Crowe his props on PTP? Have I missed the anti-Crowe movement?

4.) When did Nick Cage become the new Chuck Norris? Is this before or afer he made "National Treasure" or that other flick "The Anticipator" or whatever the fuck where he sees shit happening before it happens. He makes some good flicks, but more recently he's made some shitty ones. Accept it. And no one has ever said Nick Cage was tough. Why here? Why now?

5.) If you haven't noticed PTP isn't the Spike TV crowd. You're not gonna find many countdowns for the next John Cena movie on here.

6.) There's not that many badass overly macho actors today. Jason Bourne is as badass as they come. Damon ain't Randy Savage though. The Rock could've been badass, but he makes Disney movies.

7.) Vin Diesel is badass, and big nerd too. Suprised PTP doesn't ride for him.

8.) Kind of an addendum to point 7. Fast and the Furious is a pretty awesome franchise with the exception to Tokyo Drift (I look at that like I look at Spiderman 3, it doesn't count).

Now these aren't really points or rebuttals. Just random nothingness, but that's pretty much what this post is. So I decided to add on.

Peter Weir is just too legit and artful of a director to make a blockbuster like they wanted for that movie. The material is amazing, should be the James Bond of the modern cinematical era.
