It's a very dope monster movie buried 5 feet deep in human bullshit. Use them to launch the story and keep it moving. I don't give a fuck about character arcs. Between the first, Kong: Skull Island and this movie they suck at writing the humans anyway.
Also, is it me or did Millie Bobbie Brown suck in this shit?
SPOILERS.
SERIOUSLY SPOILERS
I'm glad Ken Watanabe and Sally Hawkins had more to do this time, but holy shit are they still done dirty. Disgusting.

Too much human trash here. None of these characters or more likeable than the weakest monster. Wasted Mothra too. Fuck this movie in the fuckin ass

That action was dope.
The human stuff was pretty bad. Only people I even sort of cared about were Ken Watanabe and Charles Dance. And I guess Ziyi Zhang was fine. Kyle Chandler and Vera Farmiga were especially awful. And I feel like it went beyond that the fact that they had very little to work with; their acting was particularly bad.
But honestly I was okay with it overall. The action sequences were enough to make it enjoyable for me. But I'll say that I really hated their ham-fisted telegraphing about where the next one of these is going to go at the very end. ("He's on our side!" "....For now.")

I wanted to see the main family get eaten, or burned alive, or trampled, or otherwise murdered by massive mythological creatures in the worst way though.

Wow!
I'll let people have the weird affection they have for 2014's similarly dreary, bland human drama 'cause it's got a lot of cleverness with how it displays all that badness and an all-time kaiju murder to cap it off, but dude. Take all the wrong lessons from both Godzilla and Kong, have the audacity for most of your best ideas to just be retreads of 2014 and figure out how to tie better acting and dialogue to even more unlikable characters and there's something really, really special-bad about this movie.
It even sucks to look at, like a working cut of a Zach Snyder film before the visual effects team swoops in and saves it. Why'd Ghidorah have to make it dark and rainy all the time unless a lot of this movie looked like shit and they didn't have a better solution?

Like it makes sense to center it around Monarch since they've been established in the first film and KONG: SKULL ISLAND, but fuck me putting family drama front and center with unlikable characters with qustionable (at best) motivations.
Yes the fights are awesome but fuck me is this movie dark with a annoying blue hue for 90% of the runtime.
