my first watching of running with scissors have made
realized the importance of a director having a good
editor by their side.

That's often lost when we deify directors.
Although I would say that actors are often more affected by editors than the director. An actor can give a 90% shitty performance but if the editors picks the right 10% and frames it well, the performance seems amazing.

Now it may fall on the director to be able to manage and fit those pieces together but you still need all of them in the first place.

a great editor isn't even good enough to save a bad director...gotta have something to work with.

Some Directors essentially cut the movie themselves from a very comfortable leather couch. Other Directors trust the Editor they employed and only make sporadic trips to the edit bay.
