New Poster & Images From 'The Wolverine' Introduce The Supporting Cast
by Oliver Lyttelton
March 25, 2013 9:00 AM

Compared to some of its summer blockbuster superhero competition -- "Iron Man 3" and "Man Of Steel" -- "The Wolverine" has been playing its cards close to its chest. We've seen a smattering of images, and lots of encouraging talk from director James Mangold and star Hugh Jackman, but not a frame of footage so far, and in general the film's a little more under the radar than its rivals, though we suppose that's fair enough, given that it won't hit theaters 'til much later.

But now the movie's promo efforts are taking a turn. 20th Century Fox are certainly hoping that this will be the week of "The Wolverine" -- a trailer arrives later in the week, and this morning sees the debut of two new posters and a brace of images from the film.

The posters -- one from the official Twitter feed (https://twitter.com/thewolverineuk), one from Coming Soon (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=101939) -- are definitely a step down from the excellent teaser one-sheet, in part because they evoke the Logan-drops-to-his-knees-and-screams-at-the-sky shot that only appeared in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" roughly one million times. The images, meanwhile, are from EW, and include first looks at Mariko (Tao Okamoto), the woman that Logan is meant to protect from the Yakuza, poisonous villain Viper (Svetlana Khodchenkova) and the mysterious and ass-kicking Yukio (Rila Fukushima).

Take a look at some of the images below, and see the rest over at EW (http://www.ew.com/ew/gallery/0,,20647938_20684746,00.html#21298595). The trailer for the film should be with us in the next few days, and the movie opens on July 26th, 2013.

I'm kind of shocked they've styled the Mariko Yashida character the way they did. Complete opposite of how she's presented in the books. Especially, since I thought this was going to be set in the past? Also, they cast Viper as a blonde, Eastern European?

Ah, well.

I hated the first Wolverine flick, and was hoping all that "back to the essence of the character" talk would have made a good film. I'll reserve judgment 'til I see a full trailer, though.

Nah, this film takes place after "X-Men: The Last Stand"...and yeah, I woulda preferred a green-haired Viper, BUT I'm definitely gonna check this out. They gotta make up for the craziness in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine"...

I just assumed that after "X-Men: First Class," they were creating films set during that time. Wasn't there a "X-Men Origins: Magneto" film in the works at one point?

>>Wasn't there a "X-Men Origins: Magneto" film in the works at one point?

Yeah...and they changed the Magneto origin story into "X-Men: First Class" because the solo Wolvie flick got such mixed reviews (despite doing well at the box office).
They didn't want to risk making a solo Magneto film at that point. So, "First Class" and the new "Wolverine" flick were intended to be the redemption films for both the
X and Logan franchises (from a critical standpoint).

Wolverine vs. Ninjas. It's usually the bloat that messes up these sequels.

The Wolverine "flying" on the train is kind of cheesy and an obvious 3D motivated shot. And the story itself seems like Superman 2 but without Zod and Co. providing a strong villain. And if he goes through with the procedure, why is he wondering what's happening to him when he's not healing?

And, on a fairly unrelated note, while Jackman's owned the role, I'd really love to see Tom Hardy get a chance at playing him. I think he'd be perfect.

I'm not sure he's wondering what's happening to him, or that he's suprised that he's not healing, I think he just has never felt what it's like for an injury to last that long. He's dealt with Pain, sure, but it immediately starts healing itself. This is probably a new sensation to him

That would be cool. I read somewhere that they wanted Bob Hoskins when they were developing the movie in the early 90's. I'd love to see how that would have played. They wanted Angela Basset for Storm too

the essence of who he is is portrayed best when he's short-even with his powers he's had to prove himself against more physically imposing people all his life
a 5"3' Logan shows that better than a Logan that's a foot taller

Sit through the first part of the credits to see how they set up Days of Future Past.

This is the quietest superhero film as in shit doesn't blow up every 2 seconds and there isn't fight after fight after fight. And even then the fights seemed small after the superhero movies of the past two years. Which is a good thing.

I still have a problem with Silver Samurai and the dialogue is super hokey, but this is shit is dope. And violent as all hell.

And Hugh must of been on roids cause that nigga looked super diesel. Add to the fact that they make sure his shirt is off 90% of the movie. But whatever yo.

Movie was good, not great, but worlds better than Origins and there wasn't much to complain about. I thought it would have been cool if Logan had more of a history there that could just be referenced, instead of a lot of it being new to him. It was a solid flick though, kept me entertained and felt it was worth my time.

It's not necessarily bad but it's aims low and undershoots.

Too many one-note (and one purpose) characters, too many storylines that really go nowhere. Low overall consequences and what seems like it should be the main storyline (Logan struggling to heal) is overlooked for most of the movie.

It should be a more personal movie, but offers no more depth than the previous X-Men films.
It could have been cool to see a more mortal Wolverine have to sleuth a little bit but he's just basically the same Logan who just gets slowed down.

The cinematography on the first action scene is cool and kind of Nolan-esque but none of the action scenes are that great and the Wolverine vs. Ninjas scene is very disappointing.

There's enough violence to keep action film fans happy enough and I like the character of Wolverine so I was happy to see him in action in a better film than Origins but it's pretty much just a middling action film.

It wasnt this epic colossus of a movie with over-the top theatrics that painted itself with self-importance (batman, watchmen, avangers). It wasnt anything groundbreaking. But it was a dope action movie with comic book characters. It learned a thing or 2 from the aesthetic success of First Class (the dialogue, even though it was somewhat campy at times, really wasnt as cheesy as the old xmen movies with all the winking at the camera shit). Jackman was captivating enough, he is a likable actor and really saves the film if anything. I wish that someone more compitent directed Wolverie movies. I wish it was taken more seriously. But Ill take what we got with this one

Feels like a throwback, with all the good and bad one may take from that.

It's the second best X-Men movie to date... not that that necessarily is a ringing endorsement, but it is what it is.

I was somewhat underwhelmed by both the film's conclusion and the post-credits scene. There are some really good moments, however.

The bullet train sequence in particular was terrific.

The drunken "show me your powers" scene.

The treatment of black characters as "noble self-sacrificing black man" and "disloyal promiscuous black woman."

Zoe Kravitz on the whole, with dragonfly wings and fire loogies.

Jennifer Lawrence, reduced to one note to play and playing it so poorly that I longed for the acting chops of Rebecca Romijn.

First Class has two really awesome scenes (Magneto at the bar, Magneto moving the satellite dish) and some decent effects on the whole. But any time neither Fassbender nor Bacon are on screen, it reeeeeally lags.

Whereas X2 has some of the best action and depiction of comic characters seen in a comic book movie. The opening, the Magneto escape, the mansion raid, Mystique breaking into the Alaska site, Jean preventing the flood from hitting the plane. All still awesome sequences that make me want to applaud.

all of the OG xmen movies I couldnt swallow some of the costumes. It worked in first class because it felt very retro but Logan's hair alone cringed me to no end (thank god its so much more realistic in Wolverine). And X2 had Halle Berry, whos performance in these movies was atrocious. I see your point but as a Whole I just enjoyed first class alot more. Maybe its dut to me playing x2 out.

He uses his smell in the beginning when it was a convenient way to meet Yukio in the bar but when he REALLY needed it, couldn't when coming back to Shingen's spot getting seized?

Wolverine ain't have no body hair

There was all of this Japanese dialogue & NO subtitles for the 1st hour of the movie

Who the fuck did Harada think he was hiding from being on the EDGE of a roof in all black on a sunny ass day? He was on some Naruto/Black Star "Imma noisy, noticeable ninja" shit.

We can see Wolverine's purgatory joints w/Jean but can't see none of Yukio's visions?

Yes, he may have been blocked from the fire but you're in a well when an ATOM BOMB dropped. Yashida's kids should've been Hills Have Eyes monsters & he should've had radiation damage

Just because you match adamantium doesn't mean you can cut through it like butter

How does putting your super shredder suit USB shits in his hands give you his healing factor?

How did Viper poison Naruto then blow on his face & took back the poison?

Wolverine ran like Ricky in Boyz N The Hood from those arrows. Prolly easy to hit the only 6'3 bastard there but you couldnt make ONE cut running through a VILLAGE?

Silver Samurai was some geezer zord

They explained the plot w/2 sentences by Yashida to Logan at the end

That bullet train scene was too long. Also them regular dudes couldn't have survived & Logan's skin should've been peeling off. Instead they made it a QTE from GOW

Logan asked for them to speak English in one scene when he speaks fluent Japanese

I knew better

that have very little to do with this actually being Wolverine.

>He uses his smell in the beginning when it was a convenient
>way to meet Yukio in the bar but when he REALLY needed it,
>couldn't when coming back to Shingen's spot getting seized?

lol. Minor shit, but yeah that doesn't make sense.

>Wolverine ain't have no body hair

Oh brother. This is such an insufferable critique.

>There was all of this Japanese dialogue & NO subtitles for the
>1st hour of the movie

Fair discourse here, but no big deal.

>Who the fuck did Harada think he was hiding from being on the
>EDGE of a roof in all black on a sunny ass day? He was on some
>Naruto/Black Star "Imma noisy, noticeable ninja" shit.

Shrug. We only see him because Logan sees him, and because.

>We can see Wolverine's purgatory joints w/Jean but can't see
>none of Yukio's visions?

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzz nothing to see here really. Would have been dope, but no big deal. This is about Logan, not her, so it's rather obvious why we get those scenes and not Yukio's.

>Yes, he may have been blocked from the fire but you're in a
>well when an ATOM BOMB dropped. Yashida's kids should've been
>Hills Have Eyes monsters & he should've had radiation damage

Nah. Logan absorbed all that shit. Still, in a movie about a man with a skeleton coated in metal and claws who heals from mortal wounds in seconds, and you're going in about the scientific accuracy of shit like this? Okay, player.

>Just because you match adamantium doesn't mean you can cut
>through it like butter

...Except it wasn't just adamantium on adamantium. That shit had some kind of super heating or energy burst in it.

>How does putting your super shredder suit USB shits in his
>hands give you his healing factor?

Who knows. That shit was stupid though.

>How did Viper poison Naruto then blow on his face & took back
>he poison?

Agreed. That also made little sense.

>Wolverine ran like Ricky in Boyz N The Hood from those arrows.
>Prolly easy to hit the only 6'3 bastard there but you couldnt
>make ONE cut running through a VILLAGE?

Shrug. He had a clear path to where he was headed, didn't know the area, and how was he to know those fuckers had ropes attached until it was too late? He doesn't GAF about some bullshit arrows. Besides, it wasn't until that venom tipped arrow got him that it did him in. His healing factor was back on Swag Level Ten Million, why worry about any of that shit? It's not a total slam dunk, but it's a reasonable way to look at it.

>Silver Samurai was some geezer zord
>They explained the plot w/2 sentences by Yashida to Logan at
>the end

NOt how I would have done it, but I understand people who were underwhelmed by that.

>That bullet train scene was too long. Also them regular dudes
>couldn't have survived & Logan's skin should've been peeling
>off. Instead they made it a QTE from GOW

I mean, Logan wouldn't have been there to begin with because mutants with healing factors don't exist to begin with. If we're going to roll with that premise, let's just roll with the complete lack of realistic physics for that scene while we're at it. It's literally on the same level of bullshit.

>Logan asked for them to speak English in one scene when he
>speaks fluent Japanese
>
>I knew better

Not sure how most of this "isn't Wolverine". You have some valid criticisms but there's a ton of nitpicking in there.

they really don't touch on that in these movies. plus wolvering being ambushed? ever? cmon.

>There was all of this Japanese dialogue & NO subtitles for the

that shit just didn't matter im guessing.

>Who the fuck did Harada think he was hiding from being on the

yea he was kinda just in the open there...way close too.

prolly just doesn't matter

>Just because you match adamantium doesn't mean you can cut

they should've discussed that sword shit more. why would holding it with two hands activate that shit?

>How does putting your super shredder suit USB shits in his

science

>How did Viper poison Naruto then blow on his face & took back

skillz

>That bullet train scene was too long. Also them regular dudes

yea 300 mph is a bit much for mortals no? but whatever

>Logan asked for them to speak English in one scene when he

this. i don't understand how he was obviously abandoned in japan after the bomb dropped yet apparently spent no time there.

i liked the flick but like every comic book movie, so many holes.

because i was thinking the same thing when i watched that scene....it bugged me a bit after the scene was over too, i was like "really? couldnt he have at LEAST opted for a SILVER suit to match the rooftop he planned to 'hide in plain sight' on instead of wearing a hookup that would completely contrast this background?? " yeah its just a little thing, but sometimes paying attention to those little things can take an 'eh, ok average' level scene up to the 'hey thats pretty COOL' level of memorability...

for this flick i felt there were a lot of 'little missed opportunities' to do that...the subtle details, and artistic choices and style, that WOULD have upped the existing 'ok/ that was decent' scenes to the level of 'Coool. wow. NICE!"...those subtle details weren't paid attention to or incorporated, and thats a shame IMO...when i get a chance i'll try to post back specific things around that.

while i enjoyed the film enough, and didnt feel like it totally sucked or anything, it was another missed opportunity at could have been POTENTIAL excellence. There was enough good/decent stuff that the bad/distracting stuff didnt win the 'so, how do i feel as i'm walking out of the theater?' test. This "The Wolverine' film is easily much better than stupid 'Wolverine Origins' <<which i will try to forget (with the exception of the opening sequence and historical montage which i think was well done).
but X2 & XMen 1st Class are still the best X's.

like i said, if i get a chance i'll post back specific missed opportunities in this film that i think WOULDve given it some extra 'umph & memorable impact' or at least would have minimized distractions that took away from it....

but again, as usual, Jackman was good as Wolv. i have no prob with his hight, lack of hair and all that. I think he's really good as Logan/Wolverine and captures the essence with his acting chops.

But I am fucking in love with Rila Fukushima. Holy crap I could've watched two hours of close ups of her just talking...

She really does look like an alien like dude above said.

X2 > First Class > The Wolverine

Hugh Jackman owns this role, despite the obvious complaints about him (i.e. too tall, no hair, too 'pretty'). Yukio and Mariko worked IMO. Silver Samurai was only OK. Viper was meh (but I'd smash).

The story wasn't terrible, and I actually really liked the stuff with the A-bomb and Wolverine healing after being scorched. The film was basically a more raw version of the first Wolverine, that didn't manage to fuck up too much of Logan's story.

The stinger was pretty fantastic though, and that movie has the potential to be the best comic book movie of all time.

..in every way

i'd like to say more about this film, but they simply don't give you much to work with. the script was thin, the action horribly telegraphed, and the cast held absolutely no chemistry.

the lack of consistency is a common plague in the marvel universe when it comes to film and this adaptation continues down that unfortunate path. there subtle attempts at humor felt more like shards of glass, and the only bad-ass scene involved logan throwing a bad guy out of a window, only to have him survive falling several stories into a pool.

there was nothing impressive about this film. like the last wolverine origin story, i walked away wishing this never happened.

it's odd, and i never thought about it till now

for me the x-men series, ff series, daredevil, spider-man (basically any marvel hero movie outside the IT, CAP-AM, Thor, Hulk, Avengers set) all seem like they exist in some "what if" alternate universe

hrm...

..i understand the dynamics & politics @ play when it comes to the marvel universe and current film adaptation.

still, that doesn't change the fact that they've made some very shitty films. even though a few of them made a dent @ the box office, most of them weren't very good.

i don't give a damn who holds the rights to specific franchises, just make sure the films are held to a certain standard.

only the movies that intentionally overlap do I consider (and its more feeling than intellectual exercise) in the same universe/"continuity"

as an extension, I generally have a higher standard for the ones in the Avengers/Thor/Cap/IM line than the X-Men ones

Dragged a lot. The love story made 0 sense to me. I LOVED the scense w/Famke in them. Those two have real chemistry. I DIDN'T like Wolvy losing his claws, nor the method - that makes NO sense. I'm curious how they retcon that.

The 'extra' scene was a little underwhelming.

I gotta say tho, I think Jackman has Wolvy down. The grumpiness, the underated dry humor, the fury (although at times he seems to cross the line into hammy) Still tho. I look forward to seeing more from him.

This was an obvious disappointment.

Saying it's better than Origins does not make it any better either. Origins was so bad that anything would have been better than that.

The Chris Claremont storyline they used to base the script on is BY FAR the most definitive Wolverine story ever. Of course even with the awesome source material.....they fucked it up.

I wasn't expecting them to get it all the way right.......but what we got was still not Logan/Wolverine.

Wolverine was a true samurai in the comic and his fight with Shingen Yashida was one of the best in the Wolverine's history because of what it meant. That was reduced to some novelty, afterthought shit in this movie.

Wolverine came into the movie unfamiliar with Japanese culture and any of the characters. I'm tired of writers feeling like the audiences are so dumb that they cannot accept things that are not shown to them. Why not just have Wolverine return on the basis of past love and honor like in the comic?

The whole Viper character was terrible and over the top. She was almost too evil and her powers were so skewed it was hard to understand why she couldn't have just kept fuckin with Wolverine whenever she wanted to. It didn't make any sense.

I wanted to finally see a Wolverine movie with the tone and the exploration of Wolverine's true warrior spirit.

This movie wasn't terrible but I felt like it was just going through the motions and not really showing you the true nature of a great character.

Also......the bone claws. Eh. Ret-con bullshit that is an unfortunate part of the character so nothing more to really say there. It's wack though.

Everything up to and including fighting Mariko's father worked for me. Very well, even. But once he goes off to fight Viper, it gets pretty dumb.

Still, for the first hour and a 45, I was pleasantly surprised, and I was convinced it had the potential to be something special. As it stands, it ended up good enough.
