I like Forte, but unless the lead up to the release packs some punch, I'll be passing.

There were a few good laughs but most of the film was painful. I don't know what I expected; it's the typical amazingly stupid so a few jokes land style from SNL. If you like SNL, you might like this but I thought it was fucking terrible.

The movie nobody asked for. One of the worst characters in SNL history. How did this get greenlighted? Was the budget too high for a movie about Kristen Wiig's aunt?

The sex scene was outstanding. Val Kilmer was very funny. Any of Kristen Wiig getting to do her trademark under-her-breath delivery was funny. And even if Forte wasn't doing funny things, I admire him for being so goddamn strange.

But yeah. This movie didn't work as well as I wanted it to. When I saw it was by the guys who did Hot Rod, I was REALLY excited. But it let me down overall.

20 minutes in I was thinking, "This is just lame."

When it was all said and done, however, I enjoyed myself.

It was actually, predictably uneven...several unfunny bits followed by a moderately amusing to weirdly/maybe laugh out loud funny bit...then repeat.

I think "word of mouth" will hurt this one...I can't see it appealing to those who aren't fans of Forte and Jorma.

Definitely worth a rental if you're in that kind of mood; I can't recommend actually paying to see it, though.

I just don't think it has "universal" comic appeal.

One critic said you'd have to be 12 yr old boy, but I don't fit that demographic, maybe I'm just really, really immature for my age.

I think that if you like the humor in sketches, there's a good chance that you will like the movie.

I thought there was a good range of jokes. The whole thing with the license plate cracked me up. The whole implicit joke in the fact that MacGruber's whole style is straight out of 1989 but he faked his death in 1999 implying that he was already a fossilized relic when he fled to Ecuador makes me laugh. They hit the audience over the head with some stuff but allowed other humor to breath. I appreciate that in my comedies.

And that's one of the things that was great about it...those unexpected takes on movie tropes--for instance, the spin on the vengeful man visiting his loved one's grave?

I knew they were going to do something ill; I didn't predict how far Taccone/Forte would take it.

MacGruber's 80's quirks as well. His reverence for that cassette deck and choice of music as he drove around the city.

Phillipe was effective as his straight man. I thought his use of MacGruber's "technique" in the climax was funny/creepy/awkward all at once.

However, there were a ton of predictable, standard d**k and bodily function jokes, but I think the more creative/funny stuff carried it.

Yeah, another "Please...I will suck your dick" begging scene is not what the comedy world needs right now. A lot of the crude dialogue was eh. I feel like for every shock bit that I chuckled at (the upper decker) there were three that I shook my head at (pound some Kunth).

I was expecting some assorted celebrity cameos including RDA (I got a lot of wrestler cameos instead) but I'm sort of glad I didn't get that.

I also thought that the credits was particularly amusing with the glossed over headline about him being a hero and killing 200 people or the extended play version of the song.

Turned out it was $6.50....I wondered how they were gonna make this work cause the joke of MacGruber is how he takes too much time bs'n to diffuse the bomb.....drawing him out into a full character was hit and miss. Some times I laughed, other times I was on AIM. The sex scenes were TOOO hilarious tho....my laughter really echoed in the empty theater. It was cool for some laughs/waste an afternoon, woulda been better @ $5....*shrugs* I'd see it again on Showtime or some sheeit 8)

Was it retarded? Yes.

But it had some pretty hilarious moments. Phillipe was a great straight man for Forte and Wiig had her moments as well. Val Kilmer also did a decent job in his role. Lots of quotables in this movie.

MacGruber is probably one of my least favorite recurring SNL sketches, period, partially because they did it so damn often in such a brief period, and it was the same mediocre joke every time. The first twenty minutes had me questioning my pick but I really wanted something to laugh at so I stuck with it and after the exposition got out of the way I found myself watching a really enjoyable b-movie.

Will Forte is awesomely hilarious when he's stripped from the restrictions of basic cable television, hitting his awkwardly ridiculous peak with the Vicki St. Elmo sex scene and all of his scenes with Val Kilmer. I loved the hero/villain relationship essentially being a couple of dorm buddies taking their petty rivalry over a girl to the very top of the international crisis food chain, although I also have to mention the catalyst for their feud was MacGruber's one truly ugly bit of plotting. It's really hard to make a character stealing his best friend's girl and convincing her to abort his unborn child someone audiences can root for, luckily Forte's charm leading up to that twist (along with the movie's many other inane, lackadaisical plot elements) allow us to forgive MacGruber begrudgingly. Besides, Cunth's death is one of the more epic treatments I've seen.

I'm truly shocked at how pleased I was with this movie as a whole, it zipped right on by and kept me laughing throughout thanks to plentiful one liners and a charming cast. My only other gripe is that nothing came of the license plate obsession, which was the only running joke in the film I felt had any impact (especially compared to MacGruber's out-of-character obsession with dick sucking) but after a pair of great setups the joke's left without a conclusion and that bummed me out. I wouldn't have recommended the theater experience to anyone but this is a pretty great late-night stream on HBO, especially if you're a fan of Forte's goofiness.

and the last post in this thread, but MAN.

in the middle of Forte getting his due for Nebraska and Last Man on Earth, this REALLY deserves another look.

I reiterate I hated the sketch as much as the next dude, but this is this generation's Hot Shots / Hot Shots Part Deux. Just so perfect if you're a fan of goofs skewering action flicks.
