>Rebecca Black - Age of the Exhibitionist
>Blu & Sndtrak — LA

it's crazy to me that Rebecca Black, yes, the annoying teen who poorly sang "Friday, Friday, gotta get down on Friday" and had the world singing along, is now a very credible pop artist (and has been for some years now). Shows what going away and working on your craft can do. This new album is very good.

Also, I feel like Blu made the west coast album people THINK The Game made with The Documentary 3. I really love the feel of it.

Ben Folds Five album of demos from their first record
Shelved First Attempt

Didn’t even know a Hiero album was coming, and I heard one song off this Ben Folds Five album earlier in summer that had me ready, but then forgot. Always liked them though.

This gives me two albums to dive into in the coming weeks.
>also
>Ben Folds Five album of demos from their first record
>Shelved First Attempt

Cool to have, not a lot of replay value IMO

I would rather have Ben’s solo piano demos (if they exist) - Elton has been releasing those and I love them. This just made me want to listen to the real BFF record, bc the demos aren’t better, and they’re not different enough to be their own thing (like pure piano demos would be)

Hiro is the real prize. Not that Full Circle or Kitchen are very good, but like I said this is easily their best since their first. It leaked quite a while ago, so I’ve been bumping it for a minute. I’m surprised there hasn’t been more love for it TBH

*If this shows up on streaming. I don't see it yet on Tidal.

Listened to the Bonobo this morning. Liked it a lot, but also very much like the last few Bonobo albums. You kind of know what you're getting (which isn't bad thing).

~ i could still snort you under the table ~

put me on to her originally, so might have been you!

hadn't heard from her in a while, glad to see something new. haven't checked it yet, probably this afternoon.

~ i could still snort you under the table ~

Yeah, 4 years since her last
Only gave it one listen while working, not enough to pick out tracks yet, but it sounded solid

radar.

>Ibibio Sound Machine*

this is great. salute for the recommendation via mention, lol.

haven't gotten to it yet, but i love their past work, esp. Electricity and Doko Mien. "Protection from evil" on Electricity has this Talking Heads vibe that pops up with them sometimes, I love it.

He made a double album and on streaming he dropped the first part on 8/11, and now the second disc on 9/11. Whole thing was available on Bandcamp a month ago, but if you haven’t checked it - now the whole thing is out and it’s very enjoyable IMO.

IMO
Which is expected since pt 1 is more experimental and pt 2 is more of a standard rappity-rap record
Both are good, and the whole thing is really good, but pt.2 will prob get more spins from most folks

The run from Make A Living thru Rappers Can’t Rap is prob my fave, but I think a lot of cats will have favorite runs on this half and a lot of them will be totally different, it’s just got really strong tracks up and down this disc

Which isn't to say part 1 was wack, but if that had been the whole album I have to admit I would have found "Loner" a bit of a letdown for 2026.

Part 2 absolutely knocked it out the park with highlight after highlight, bars and beats.

I don't like the beat anymore because its just a loop. ALC didn't FLIP IT ENOUGH!

Allied State of the National Electric Beat Treaty Organization (NEBTO)

I like part 1, but part 2 is better to me.

Also, I gotta say that I love that in 2026 my current rotation is Von Pea, Skyzoo, Rapsody, and Kooley High. Same people I might’ve had in rotation at any given time in 2011. Props to them all for still being really good at what they do.

I been saying Chizzle is next outta the West, and boy did he deliver.

Already played this front to back 3x.

I love that he presented HIMSELF on his debut album. He didn't rely on a bunch of features from established artists.

Production is great, raps are great.

Chizzle is like if you threw YG and Tyler in a blender, so it's appropriate that the only rap guest is Tyler, twice, and each track he features on is so different from the other.

I knew about AZ Chike before GNX, but talk about making the most of your moment.

I hope this album gets the proper push and reception it deserves.

there's a good amount this week i'm interested in haven't been playing a ton of music the last few weeks, so will just get to things as I do.

been on a quieter vein lately so first up is Jake Xerxes Fussell, Agnes Obel, Bonnie Prince Billy, maybe that Rhiannon Giddens. Good day for acoustic-ish stuff.

~ i could still snort you under the table ~

I don't know why this wasn't listed above and I almost forgot about it. It's great, maybe the best from the band/crew.

Really well done retro-soul.

But you’d have to assume….

4 song EP. The Kev Brown produced “The Glow” - I’ve had that on heavy rotation since it came out. About to get into the rest of it.

for Rap Albums this year.

zero skips for me, diverse & great production, diverse topics, a sound that is familiar but still sounds fresh...couldn't really ask for me, at least as far as I'm concerned.

been playing this front to back at least once a day since Friday, but most days multiple times.

I've heard all the praise from multiple places. It just hasn't clicked for me yet. To be fair, I haven sat down to listen to it all the way through. I've been catching two or three songs at a time in the car.

I have a feeling that it's going to hit me after I truly sit with it.

Peace,
Doitall76

~ i could still snort you under the table ~

Leon Bridges - i wish he didnt put the album out in thirds, but I'm glad its finally complete so i can listen to the whole thing

Skyzoo - the last collab with Apollo is one of my favorite rap records, period - so i don't expect this one to top it, but i would still expect a great effort, excited to listen

not listed but def checking:
Benny Sings - 22 Durnham Dew
Alfa Mist - Live at Real World Studios
Del Tha Funkee Homosapien & Mars Kumari - Skeletor Bag

Might like it as much as All The Brilliant Things.

Good looking out on that Del.

good looking out on that Hermanos Gutierrez

one of the best rap albums this year for sure.

if you like this, then Easy Truth should be a front-to-backer for you too

so adding that to the list for sure

I always want to like Leon Bridges more than I do but will check eventually.

to give him another chance and do a deep dive. All his albums are terrific IMO.

Coming Home is a great retro style album - sort of the same way Mayer Hawthorne started out, cultivating a vintage sound. IDK about Mayer, but i know Leon did this album with all vintage instruments and recording equipment, and all the songs were recorded as a single take with the whole band like they used to do.
I also happened to be working at Billboard when this came out, so i got to be in a very small conference room while he did 3-4 songs solo for just me a a couple other people. It was special and def was the start of me being a fan. I think I have every track of this album favorited in my itunes - and it's basically a double album if you add in the deluxe tracks and a couple other loosies with the same sound that he released around then (So Long, Katchi, Ball of Confusion, Hold On)

Good Thing is prob my least favorite, but i still like it a lot. I think this was him just starting to find his voice after moving past the retro sound. Standouts for me are Bad Bad News, Beyond, Naomi, That Was Yesterday

Gold-Digger Sound I think is where he really started to form his own identity. I really love Why Don't You Touch Me, Sho Nuff and Blue Mesas.

Leon is a great album - not really any skips for me. To me this is sort of the culmination of his growth from Good Thing to Gold Digger. If i had to pick some standouts it would be Laredo, Ain't Got Nothing On You, and Never Satisfied

And then the new one, Happiness Anytime - ive spend the least amount of time with this one obv, but i really love it. More Caribbean influence here than he's ever tapped into before, which i really dig.

And of course you really can NOT gloss over his collabs with Khruangbin (Texas Sun, Texas Moon) - those 2 EPs are sooo damn good, i dont even have the adjectives for them.

I wanted to like Leon more than I really did. The vintage style was fine but it didn't knock me out. It wasn't terrible but it just didn't grab me.

But I was absolutely floored by "Texas Moon." I couldn't stop listening to it or talking about it. I had to run back and dive into his discography. And "Golddigger's Sound" has become another favorite.

He's one of my favorite R&B/Soul artists out right now. I haven't had a chance to peep "Happiness Anytime" yet but I'm looking forward to it.

I'll do another run through his stuff soon. I like the Khruangbin records, but I usually feel like his other stuff is either too on-the-nose retro or is, in his more recent stuff, just missing something for me.

But I've never spent a lot of time with him, beyond the Khruangbin eps, so that's on me.

Coming Home and Good Thing (at least for now)

as i described, i kinda have an outsized personal connection with Coming Home, but objectively, there are other neo-retro albums that are much better.
And like i said Good Thing feels pretty transitional and "findy" to me (your milage may vary)

but as Marbles said, GDS is a great one

And I knew Leon would be great as soon as I heard the title - whenever an artist goes self-titled and its NOT their debut, you know you're in for it. (Kiwanuka is another good example)

And i like the new one more with every listen, its pretty infectious.

Actually excited for quite a bit

(or at least it's not on tidal yet, so i'd assume other streaming too)

The new track is New Life. I think on Tidal they removed the listings for the other songs and just put them all together.

I keep a spreadsheet so when I saw the track listing I realized the other 3 songs were out before lol

Haven't listened to either album yet outside of singles but will be shocked if I don't rock with both.

I don't like the beat anymore because its just a loop. ALC didn't FLIP IT ENOUGH!

Flip it enough? Flip these. Flip off. Go flip some f*cking burgers.(c)Kno

Allied State of the National Electric Beat Treaty Organization (NEBTO)

Ogi and Anoop, who worked on Samm Henshaw's album this year, have an EP out under the name SunandMoon

Have not listened yet, have no idea what it's like, but probably worth at least a listen.

It's on Tidal, don't see it on bandcamp.

Looks like the green is the only one I left. Ordered all the colored ones as soon as they dropped.

Damn, that one is like a 20/10 to me!

"Nuclear War" is ridiculous. Low key, this might be the album I was wanting from Badu this time around (and yes, i hate myself for the "this vs that", but it is what it is)

Kiefer is a solid listen too. Maybe a little bit "audio wallpaper", but in the best way. Would not be mad at this playing in coffee shops everywhere.

Skyzoo needs no extra hype from me.

I liked the Jimetta. Only knew her from Blu so wasn't sure what to expect. I can see some people not giving it a chance because of the song lengths but its well worth it and the songs don't feel long at all.

AND TINASHE - POPSTAR

DAMN, how did i leave Tinashe off my initial list. that was definitely on there, and one of the BEST albums of the year. so dope to see that project, and Tinashe, finally getting more deserved recognition.

I don't think anyone here mentioned it, but I kept seeing it mentioned on Threads and ignored it for weeks.

Glad I finally played it.

This is such a vibe. One of the year's best. One of my favorite albums to put on first thing in the morning because it's just enough, but not too much, musically.
