"Statik Selectah & Lukah - A Lost Language Found"
Fri Jun-20-25 09:10 AM by PROMO

in the spirt of doitall's posts (cuz I don't usually make album posts)...PEEP THIS ALBUM.

you ain't never heard Memphis rap like this, and i mean that in the best way.

if you a fan of RAPPING and boom bap, "real hip hop", etc, you will not be disappointed with this album.

Statik already one of the more underrated producers, and I've never heard of Lukah a day in my life. saw a tik tok about this project dropping last night and figured "well, if Statik is doing the beats i'll check it out" and boy was i happily surprised. even the interludes on here are fire.

i've said it before: i think i'm a fan of all rap from Memphis...and this still holds after this listen, but this ain't your usual rap from Memphis.

like, if you're a fan of 90s rap, you WILL like this album. album features include Killer Mike, Bun B, Termanology, Jay Worthy, Propain, 8 Ball.

i love a surprising, fire album.

Thank goodness for PROMO. I didn't want to spam the board with a 3rd one. But, I saw this and this is in my cue to listen to.

I absolutely love Statik's production style. There are sooo many times that I wonder if he samples on particular tracks because he has seemed to master the mixing and engineering aspect to make things sound so good.

'preciate cha PROMO.

Peace

Statik is dialed in here, reaching into his boom bap bag but w/a solid southern twist.

Loose concept is *great*, Lukah is rhyming excellent. (New to me, too)

Mos Def/Yasiin/Black Star sampled vocals on the first cut. Of all producers, I feel like Statik is doing the most to point back to that late 90s/early 00s era, you can tell he appreciates it.

Been knowing Lukah since he was a kid and would spit at shows that we had. Proud of his rise. This is a damn good album.

Respect to Statik for bringing newer talent to light instead of chasing big placements.

This is like if a FIRE, grimey 90s rap album from NYC had a baby with Goodie Mob's "Soul Food".

Just, super dope all around.

I hope this translates into some sort of success for homie, cuz I've been kind of keeping an ear out to see if it's getting mentioned even like, from the music tik tok people that I see, and I haven't seen it YET.

Haven't seen any substantial mention of it anywhere --- given the features and that Statik is involved, that's kind of weird.

.. and saved it to listen to later this week. Looking forward to it. Glad to hear it's as good as I'd hoped/expected it to be.

Statik is the man. And I've also never heard of Lukah.

I only got hip to him in 2023, when someone here recommended his “Permanent Blackface” album (I think it was Stadiq). Then last year he did a pretty damn dope project with Real Bad Man called “Temple Needs Water. Village Needs Peace.” It’s definitely one of the more “serious” albums Real Bad Man has produced.

Lukah got other projects going back to like 2018, but I haven’t had a chance to listen to those yet.

These 2 have excellent chemistry.

I’m expecting more in the near future.

Lukah been a problem. Raw Extractions was excellent, as was When the Black Hand Touches You.

IMHO, Possibly the best rap artist to emerge in the post-COVID era.

you know, there's some underground/indie rap albums that sort of get a following. i haven't seen that with this album, unfortunately.

Between his compilations and collaborative projects, he's released about an album a year, sometimes more, since 2007. He's well-respected and liked by his peers. He's recorded with just about everyone on the underground and "true school" scene. He also tends to have his finger on the pulse of which artists are going to break through, recording with many darlings either just before or just as they're on their way to blowing up.

And yet... it nevers seems like his projects get much traction. I don't what's preventing him from being viewed as a boom-bap Alc type producer. Maybe he was a litle too ahead of his time in terms of being so prolific, releasing multiple projects regularly probably a half a decade before it caught on. Maybe people aren't taking to the whole "record an album in 24 hours thing". Still, it's strange a lot of his stuff goes unnoticed. He recorded an EP with Freddie Gibbs over a decade ago that known ever seems to know about or acknowledge. And another with Action Bronson. He's got a little traction with the Bun B and Curren$y albums, but that's about it. Can't call it.

Also glad you brought up Alchemist cuz I also, for some reason, link the two producers. I think it's probably because they're both relatively prolific. I feel like they're always giving us something dope to listen to.
