"Sick Rick - Post Storytelling"

inspired by Spidey's TOTD, im trying to put together a mixtape of Slick Rick features/tracks since his last album (1999)

So Da Art of Storytellin' with Outkast wouldn't make the cut, as that came out at essentially the same time as his album of the same name
I'm also not including stuff if his role was super minimal (Girls Girls Girls by Jay-z)
Pretty much just looking for legit verses and songs from 2000 on

what am i missing????

Mariah Carey - Giving Me Life

And there’s a handful from late 1999-00 which I think were all slightly after his album dropped?

So Fresh - Will Smith
If We Give You a Chance - Warren G
Why Not - Erick Sermon

And he had the track “I Sparkle” off the Wild, Wild West soundtrack which was right around the time his album came out.

adding this but chopping it at the end of ricks verse lol

and yeah, all those others were all right there - rick dropped in may, will in nov, G in october, WWW in june, sermon in summer 2000

im inclined to include them all bc he just doesnt do that many features, and these all slap, esp the Sermon track

I’d mentally placed Rick’s album and WWW soundtrack around summer time, and Will and Warren in the fall - just off memory. I bought Warren’s and Will’s albums on tape that fall as I’d just started driving and my car had a tape player. Insane how strong the music memories are to be able to mark time from 25 years ago, lol.

Yeah, I love all 3 of those songs - I bought Will’s album mainly for “So Fresh”, the Warren G song is just smooth as hell, and yeah that Erick Sermon song is very dope.

The beat is phenomenal summer listening and Slick's verse/story is typically on point. Warren's verse was cool too, relative to the fact that he can't rap for shit.

Wish they'd left Phats Bossi (? whoever tf that is ?) off the track. I remember that on the leaked version of the track/album, it was just G and Rick, which was definitely preferable.

I Want It All is one of G's best albums IMO, too. I guess it's just the first 3 ranked in order, now that I think of it. All his other releases, to my memory, are pretty hit and miss.

Yeah, agree it just sounds like pure summer. Rick’s verse always cracked me up, and yeah while Warren was never a dope rapper - he generally sounded good saying it on his own beats - smooth delivery and dope voice that fit his own beats. I liked that he kept referencing Rick throughout his verse - thought that was a cool show of respect to a legend.

Agreed! Felt that way about “You Never Know” too - Warren and Snoop, great beat, great hook, and then….Phats Bossi to close it out. lol, nah. I respect trying to put new people on, but that guy had no business being on those tracks. Toss him a verse on a remix or something, lol.

One of my only real complaints with the album - I love the production and hooks, and most of the songs, and there’s some features I really like - Kurupt, Crucial Conflict, Mack 10, of course Nate Dogg, Snoop, and Rick. Even Jermaine Dupri was fine.

>I Want It All is one of G's best albums IMO, too. I guess it's

Agreed, Regulate got its well deserved props. But I think “Take a Look” and “I Want It All” were way better than they got credit for. Great albums to me.

Return of the Regulator was just ok. I mostly liked In the Midnight Hour though. “Hit and miss”, I would agree with. There were some skips, but the highs were very high IMO. I really liked Bishop Lamont - thought he had next! The 3 songs that Nate was on were the 3 best on the album, and I loved “In Case Some Shit Go Down” with Mike Jones. I remember going and buying that CD, a few weeks after getting The Minstrel Show. Both days, I couldn’t wait to get out of work and get to FYE to cop those.

I know Warren produced a song for Lil Wayne recently - hoping that makes the album for Warren’s sake. Always want to see that guy win.

Yea I didn't mean to sound so harsh lol. Warren G is an all time favorite, and you're right, he sounds cool and smooth over his own beats even if the lyrics are lacking.

EXACTLY. Like why those two songs, specifically ?! Those are beautiful songs that he all but ruins when he comes in hah. It's funny cuz I always forget that he's on the album/those songs too. Like never fails. He's so forgettable that I'm re-annoyed every single time his verses come on.

>Agreed, Regulate got its well deserved props. But I think

Yea - the production on Take a Look is otherworldly IMO. Smokin' Me Out, Reality, What We Go Through (!!!), all super fire. The whole album is, really.

I loved Yo Sassy Ways and Ghetto Village from Return. I gotta revisit to find what else I liked. It's been a while. Midnight Hour I barely remember, so I guess I should revisit that, too.

Oh shit I didn't even know that ! He's had a few seemingly random production placements in recent years, which always makes me happy. I'm always rooting for him, too. Seems like a super, super down to earth, solid dude. Kind of nerdy if we're being honest lol. But he's a great interview, has great stories. Think he was on .. Drink Champs ? recently, and was very engaging as always.

Yo Sassy Ways was the one for me. I wish Warren and Nate would’ve made an album or two together - I don’t think they ever missed. Every song they did together was heat.

I watch a lot of his interviews and always appreciate how he comes across. He posted a snippet of the song he did with Wayne on IG, and said it’s supposed to be for The Carter VI. It was sounding good.

Large Professor gritty beat and Slick Rick's polish was a match made in heaven.

Slick Rick’s “Victory” is a thrilling visual album that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Set in the heart of London, this gripping 25-minute film stars Idris Elba and Nas, bringing a cinematic twist to Slick Rick’s iconic storytelling. With stunning visuals and an intense, suspenseful plot, Victory blends rap and film in a way you’ve never seen before. Don’t miss this electrifying experience, where music, drama, and star power collide in one unforgettable ride through the streets of London.

post might be about something else. Glad that’s not the case.

Dope post though. I’ve always loved Slick Rick’s features and post golden era contributions. He’s got one of the best all time batting averages when it comes to quality songs. Just wish he was a bit more prolific. Of all the golden age rappers, his style and flow seemed to have the most carry over appeal. Maybe if he came along several years later when hip hop was becoming a much more lucrative and serious industry, he could’ve had more staying power like Snoop.

Thats one “what if”, but certainly another is “what if he didn’t miss most of the 90s?” I mean, Behind Bars was cool for what it was, but if he wasn’t in jail and was active for the entire 90s, what could he have done between 92 and 99?

As fast as hip hop changed back then, his comeback album in ‘99 is really incredible if you think about it. He missed multiple eras of rap, and still dropped a great album that sounded fresh in 99.

And then continued to have legal problems throughout the 00’s….he probably could’ve dropped an album on the heels of “Girls, Girls, Girls” or after Nas “I Can” was everywhere. He absolutely killed it on Mos Def’s album in 09, I would’ve loved a Rick album after that.

Legal problems really messed everything up. I hope he’s got one more dope album in him and can get a much deserved victory lap at least.
