"R&B Songwriting: Share some of your favorite lyrics"

I heard Victoria Monet sing today "Tell me baby, baby, what's your sign? 'Cause you're astronomically fine."

and I thought that was quality songwriting*. Made me think about some of my favoriting song writing like when Ne-yo wrote:

Gotta change my answering machine
Now that I'm alone
'Cause right now it says that we can't come to the phone
And I know it makes no sense, 'cause you walked out the door
But it's the only way I hear your voice anymore

Like that's Dope AF.

Of course, my favorite Songwriter is Prince. I've been trying to figure out The Ballad of Dorothy Parker and If I Was Your Girlfriend for 30 years. The dude paints a heck of a picture in Joy in Repetition.

Who are your favorite songwriters?

*And by Songwriting, I am specifically referring to writing lyrics, not the music compositions.

**********
"Everyone has a plan until you punch them in the face. Then they don't have a plan anymore." (c) Mike Tyson

"what's a leader if he isn't reluctant"

I gave you all my precious love

And everything you wanted from me...

you didn't hear me calling out...

Calling for your warm affection...

After all this time...

You can't deny...

What I'm feelin'...is real...

And I stood by your side...

Went through all the hurt and pain

and you turned and walked away....

---------

What if you lie again?

What if you try to hurt me?

What if I ain't good enough for ya?

What if you haven't changed?

Still, I can't seem

to get you out of my head

There ain't nothin' out there like you

But if you still love me baby

like I love you...

then maybe we can start all over....

These are the days in your life

When the price of time is free

Like your daddy said the world is yours

So let it flow naturally

All the season's changes

Escort them with a kiss

You welcome all life's tricks

So eat the peach without the pit

Never forget when our eyes first met

The way it felt to me, we were in harmony

The day I lost the bet

We were reckless, but so precise

The baby's joy the one thing

that we did right

So look alive

We got a front row seat

It's only you and me

and that's alright with me

If you're ever blue

Well, take a look around

I belong to you

and that's the truth

Like Ciara's "Promise" or the bridge of "Tonite" from Netta Brielle. I think it reflects how I am in relationships.

Individual writers, I'd say Fauntleroy is an identifiable favorite. The words are a little abnormal, and the melodies sound like he's playing with the pitch wheel on a synth. Like on Justin Timberlake's "Strawberry Bubblegum".

I love hearing writers' perspectives on shows like Questlove Supreme or the R&B Money podcast.

I probably find myself randomly singing her songs more than anyone else. They're just so obsessive like lol

There must have been an angel by my side
Something heavenly led me to you
Look at the sky
It's the color of love

There must have been an angel by my side
Something heavenly came down from above
He led me to you
He led me to you

He built a bridge to your heart, all the way
How many tons of love inside? I can't say

When I was led to you
I knew you were the one for me
I swear the whole world could feel my heartbeat
When I lay eyes on you
Ahhhhhhhhhh
You wrapped me up in the color of love

You gave me the kiss of life!
Kiss of life
You gave me the kiss that's like
The kiss of life

each of the songs I'm posting are hella simple, but effective with painting the pictures.

opposing word like the first two lines and chorus.

Still

We are going down
Cuz you're always getting high
And your crumbs of lovin
No longer get me by
Wow! It gets better everytime that we get high
Then your crumbs of lovin
They somehow get me by
Why say bye bye
When it only makes me cry
I still
Light up like a candle burnin when he call me up
I still
Melt down like a candle burning everytime we touch
Oh say what you will
He does me wrong and I should be gone

Ceelo does something similar on Who Cares?

Basically, I'm complicated
I have a hard time taking the easy way
I wouldn't call it schizophrenia
But I'll be at least two people today
If that's okay

And I could go on and on and on
But who cares?

It's deep how you can be so shallow
And I'm afraid 'cause I have no fear
And I didn't believe in magic
Until I watched you disappear
I wish you were here

And I could go on and on and on
But who cares?

You see, everybody is somebody
But nobody wants to be themselves
Ooh, and if I ever wanted to understand me
I'd have to talk to someone else
'Cause every little bit helps

Prince is also my favorite. also simple in this case from Way Back Home.

I never wanted a typical life
Scripted role, huh a trophy wife
All I ever wanted, to be left alone
See my bed's made up at night
'Cause in my dreams I roam
Just trying to find, trying to find
My way back, back home

Prince - Goodbye

Last night when I left you fast a sleeping
I should have contemplated suicide
For the smile upon your face that's well worth keeping
By morning smears for every tear you cry
I could manage a week or two without those kisses
It'd be hard, but something tells me I could try

For that matter, whatever to make you reconsider
Is there truth when you make love to a lie?
Excuse me, but is this really goodbye?

Why did I ever let you in this morning?
Why didI let you come inside my door?
I should have known without that smile adorning your face
A kiss was not what you came for
That's when your hand reached out to touch me gently
At least that's how it happened in my mind

For that matter, whatever to make you reconsider
Is there truth when you make love to a lie?
Excuse me, but is this really goodbye?
You might also like
Make Your Mama Happy

Prince and the Revolution
yes, and?
Ariana Grande

You can't begin to understand how I think about you
(Everything)
Everything I want to do, I cannot do without you
However wrong you want, I'll be
Just please don't leave
(Don't leave)
If it means this life without you, baby
I swear I'll spend it on my knees
Excuse me, but is this really goodbye?

Last night when I left you I was so sure
We'd be together forever and four days
And now my shade of blue couldn't get no bluer
I don't even know what I did to make you go away
I could possibly stage a front and play the cool one
(Cool one)
Heart in my hand trying to hold back every cry
But who would applaud me when it's you, my one and only
Who ever gave me a good reason not to die

Y'all buy those labels, I was born supreme

Rahsaan Patterson- Loving You, 2nd verse

Gotta have it, expensive habit
Spent all my dough - Now I want more and its cold
I need a hit
So I wrote some shit that radio can play fo' sho
Make that easy cash
Make a mad dash back to your place
Causе my body's shakin
Love you hard and fast
Til the chill passes away until I'm ok

Van is a poet of the highest order.

Terence Trent D'arby was also a helluva poet, but he could get carried away sometimes.

Coultrain does/did some decent writing as well.
