"What is the oldest song you can think of that sounds contemporary?"

As in, if folks heard it for the first time today, they wouldn't doubt its a new song.

I may be bugging but I think Sly Stones Family Affair

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xag5RKD0VHk

or Like a Baby

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OoHlLXaxGec

And it's not that I think these songs sound like anything on the radio, but it's shocking to me that these songs are 50 years old. These songs sound like something an alt artist would put out today.

I also got Prince's Erotic City

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aoSK7vju_l8

Shocked no one has figured out how to cover it.

And also Tom Tom Club - Genius of Love (have to speed it up though)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ECiMhe4E0pI

What do you have?

Edit: Also Mystic Brew by Ronnie Foster

Proto-trip hop? Dirty drums paired with smooth vocals and keys. The live sounding mix with reverb seems like it was not in vogue in the 80s for this kind of city pop type stuff.

It's insane that this is from 1970 to me.

Would sound right at home on a modern indie pop album:

Partly because of how innovative he was, and partly because so much modern music is influenced by him.

There are better answers to this question, but as far as hip hop goes...it's my best answer.

Tomorrow Never Knows sounds. The clarity of the drums and just the style of the song is like a precursor to some of Radiohead’s post-Ok Computer stuff.
