"Why was _____ on that song? Let’s talk pointless features"

Why did Ja Rule do the hook of Grand Finale(Method Man, Nas, DMX)?

He didn’t do a verse - just the hook. But DMX was on the song - why didn’t he do the hook? They brought in the poor man’s X to do something X could’ve done himself, and X was already on the song!

He was the boyfriend talking on the phone.

He didn’t produce the song, he didn’t rap on it. Just talked on the phone at the beginning.

they were saying that a lot of times, artists will call in a favor for a skit or something, but not credit the artist. It's a way to avoid paying for a "feature". This sounds like maybe one of those situations, except it sounds like he was credited ? Or at least it was obvious it was him. Haha

First of all, I don’t even know who he is and I don’t think I’ve ever heard of after but why is he in Men Vs Many with Mic Geronimo, Flush and OC?

He’s not even listed as a feature and comes in to do like 8 bars in the last verse and then gets included on the last hook.

I'd guess it was a Ja song to begin with and Irv took him off for X's sake or just to be an overall shitty opportunist, like the podcast era has shown him to be.

There’s another one of him telling the same story where he says they tell Pac he’s crazy cuz Deck is killing that verse and Pac responds and says something like “ain’t no one trying to hear all that”

Either way, exactly what I said, Daz kept Deck’s opening to let them know he was “in the house” and that’s because they knew he killed that joint.

…(Cube and Dre) project that of course never materialized. Then it appeared in the O.G. Press packets for Dogg Food on the tracklist; if I recall, it was going to be the first song on side 2, back they still cared about splitting albums into sides.

I always thought it was originally for Dogg Pound...swear I heard/read that somewhere. Also pretty sure that version is out there.

I've also heard the Dre/Cube thing

Quick google, now it looks like it was originally made during Doggystyle sessions-

Maybe the beat bounced around?

Either way Daz made a slapper

Kicks **maybe** six bars, none of which are anything substantial. Then the song ends.

Sounded like dude just wandered in the studio on the put him on.

Though even though he didn’t do much on the song, it probably wasn’t pointless for Dilated early in their career to have a bigger veteran artist appear on their single?

Obviously his hook is needed but to think that’s his only feature on ATLiens when they had In Due Time in the cut is still amazing to me.

That song would’ve elevated that album even more.

One could argue the sound is too happy for the vibe of the album but I think it’s the perfect closer after Growing Old.

I'm with you. I remember wondering where the Lo verse was on there too. But really, that album blew me away so much when it came out that I couldn't do much other than listen to it repeatedly.

Years later, I added In Due Time and Roaches and Rats to 'my version' of ATLiens. They should've never given me a burner 25 years ago! Once I got that 48x, it was a wrap! Haha.

The Canibus song should have been left off the project. It seems like an A&R's request to get the hottest emcee of the season on the album. That song is not a good one, when slapped on the near end of the album. Detracted from the album.

Peace

I would also have cut My City and the long ass interlude leading into Stolen Moments.

This two moments really throw off the flow of the album.

... but, as you're obviously well aware, the 90s were a different time, and they were seen as part of the listening experience of an album/project. Nowadays you don't really see them, and with good reason.

But even as far as 90s skits or interludes go, this one seemingly fits the tone and feel of the album better than most. It's the same type of thing as "Ego Trip by Nikki Giovanni" from Blackalicious' Nia. I think they both strike the right tone on their respective albums.

But I'm not gonna argue too hard against you saying you'd rather just hear the music. I can't disagree with that in theory.

Very out of place there

His part is annoying AF. Rest of the song is pretty damn good. Nice mid tempo jam by Usher and Luda has a solid appearance. But Lil Jon’s raspy, shouting on a slow jam is really pointless.

I actually liked that one as a song better than “Yeah”.

And I agree , they could’ve kept that one for Usher’s album and cut out Jon’s part and it would’ve been a better song and a solid R&B song with a rap verse. And then in a trade they could’ve gave “Yeah” to Jon - since that sound on that song was 100% his anyway. That would’ve made more sense musically.

Weird. I was thinking it came out in the late 2000s, but it fits for the time. I have no recollection of this song being very mainstream and in the clubs. That was my senior year of college and I definitely was not feeling Lil Jon - but did like a ton of southern rap.

I still love the song, but always hit skip when Jon’s verse comes on. And yes, this was Lil Jon’s song (well, he used the sample first), lol.
