Hmmmm...Maybe Pete pushes the artist formerly known as Sense to bring some motivated/non-sleepy time lyrics? Moderately hyped to see the outcome...

Integrity is the Cornerstone of Artistry...

Pete/Skyzoo is one of my favorite albums of the last 5 years or so. Pete’s definitely still got it.

I haven’t been all that into Common in awhile, but hearing him over my favorite producer definitely has me interested.

.. have been ultra redundant. Lot of slow-jazzy production (which isn't necessarily a bad thing, just in smaller doses) so I'm hoping Pete laces Comm with some bangers that'll better fit his lyricism.

Last great Common album was Black America Again and it's because it had a lot of hype, diverse sonic landscapes.

Which was mostly produced by Riggins and Glasper.

Don't get me wrong, I liked those albums well enough. I just thought they were a little one-note sonically.

and go into his personal life. Man wrote a bio, he needs more of that in his music. Tell some stories about all these women he gets in relationships that don't seem to last long. Talk about dating Tiffany Haddish.

The older he gets, the less personal his music has gotten.

"Let Love" was a suuuuuper personal album. He even disclosed that he'd been sexually abused as a young kid. In fact, that album was billed as a companion piece to the very bio you mentioned.

That album didn't really hit with anyone (IMO it had a couple of high highs but was otherwise pretty unremarkable). But that knock on him isn't particularly fair or true.

to be clear, I was never sexually abused, but that album is very emotional, and everything else really connected with me.

Also, love Beautiful Revolution Pt 2, thought Pt 1 was meh.

And the more I think about it the more I remember liking a lot of songs from that album, overall. Gotta revisit I guess.

It is A LOT better than I recalled.

Very solid. A couple tracks could be cut and a few cringe lines, but this the case with literally every Common release- and I'm a huge fan.

Much better that I remembered.

Common seems to go in cycles: hitting high for an album or two, then fade a bit to middling/lower tier work for a few, then hit high again. He's about due for one of his harder hitting records and I wouldn't be surprised if Pete brings it out.

Exactly re: Pete. That's what No ID did for him on Dreamer/Believer after the Kanye collab got stale.

Then what Riggins and Glasper did on Black America Again after the No ID reunion got a little stale.

I'm expecting Pete to do *that* thing for him now that the Riggins/Glasper thing has gotten *very* stale. Reinvigorate him a bit.

They’re talking about it being a 90s sounding album.

The Skyzoo “It’s All Good” beat was actually made in ‘94, and it’s amazing. Com would sound great on that too if he had that beat. https://youtu.be/1F_aeJFo20I?si=n9BAj1nYk_V3Lxym

And that “Return of the SP1200” was all beats that Pete made in the 90s.

He pulling more of them out of the stash, or just making new beats with that “sound”?

That Skyzoo/Pete project was one of the best releases of the 10 years or so...rare to be able to rock a full project front to back these days. A personal classic...

When Common came with The Resurrection, I saw him as a new and improved CL Smooth for some reason. CL 2.0, if you will. Different styles, but within the same vein or continuum. Nowadays, I would put somebody like Blu in that lane.

equal parts introspective, crafty, slick with words and at home on the beat. There's something missing from a lot of his later albums-not to say they were bad, just that *something* wasn't there to hold them together-and Pete obviously tapped into it

My version is usually something like “nothing to write home about”.

The Skyzoo album he did was one of the best of recent years. You didn’t like Eastern Conference All Stars?!

The Return of the SP1200 vol. 1 and 2?

Petestrumentals 3 and 4?

The Benny the Butcher/Smoke DZA EP that he produced was heat too.

"EC All-Stars" is upper echelon, top 5% of Pete Rock beats.

Dope visuals. Com is spitting and I dig the old school aspects of the beat. Could’ve used a little more variance throughout but overall it’s solid.

I was expecting the Marley-sirens to periodically drop out or only come back during the chorus, but otherwise still a good song and video. Love the little Pete-treat at the end, hopefully the album is full of those.

I like both of these.

Part of the problem I have to temper here is I want to be wowed by them, not just happy.

Thus far my appetite is whetted enough that I’m salivating for that main course- but then I’m worried that these two are the main course.

If they drop 8-10 more on this level, it will be a dope project.

That said, I’m still hoping for a couple homerun hits.

I don't get on the hype train about a 2nd one coming out, until it does.

I am still waiting on the Black Thought, Common, Pharoahe, and Mos Def supergroup album.

De La has an album coming out produced by Pete Rock and Premier, right?
That Mannie Fresh and Mos Def album OMFG is still coming, right?

Peace

Black Thought, Phonte, and Rhymefest.

Scarface, Ice Cube, and Nas.

lol, there’s been so many supergroup rumors over the years.

I’m just glad Com/Pete and Nas/Premier have actually recorded music that we’ve heard and albums seem imminent, though.

Which reminds me…..I wonder if that LL/Q-Tip album is still coming, and why it hasn’t dropped yet?

I think the days of dropping multiple singles, multiple videos, album trailers, etc are long gone.

This is the era of surprise drops, etc. You got us hyped Com just drop it when you're ready.

Monch did the same slow roll out shit with Thirteen. Seems wildly outdated to me and I wonder if it ends up costing more money than its worth in the end.

I'm in the same boat.

Pretty remarkable Common is willing to go in the Pete Rock lane given how long he's been in the Hollywood game. Great to see that he hasn't lost the hunger for going back to his roots musically.

Two of my top 5 all time MCs who have done great work together in the past. RIP Dave, would've been nice to have them all together again (their last collab was Days of Our Lives (I believe) which is just an all timer banger and all time Comm verse, IMO) but I'm sure they'll somehow make it a tribute to him.

In an attempt to curb my spending on vinyl, I’ve been trying to limit my purchases to super classics (Low End Theory, Main Ingredient, ATLiens, etc.) or to my favorite Indy artists, especially if I’ve met them or if they posted here (LB, Tanya Morgan, Kooley High, etc).

Might have to expand my “rules” to all time favorite artists that still got it that just might put out a super classic? I really want this and it’s not a crazy price, so fuck it. I’m in.

but I'll post this in here since it's still Common related: for folks interested in a color vinyl version of Electric Circus, here's a link:

Found it as I was curious if this album got repressed on vinyl as I wasn't into collecting vinyl when this album first dropped. A pretty reasonable price for a color vinyl repress IMO.

Honestly, the only argument is the amount of work. If someone wants to claim Preem has more bangers or RZA had a been run… that’s fine.

But if we’re talking “the beat” beatmaker… it’s Pete.

We're really hyped right now about vet rappers showing they can do this as they get older, but Pete is sort of the original blueprint --- he's never really lost his step, his output has always been at the very least consistent and often exceptional, and I've never felt like his stuff is overly formulaic or stale --- he knows just how to keep it fresh without losing his sound.

Some folks haven't felt the last few Petestrumentals records and the experimenting with a live band but it's all been super dope to me.

how you going to call an album great before it's even dropped?

If every other track is a snooze, this album might be good --- but not great. I don't expect that, but still...

There's an interesting conversation to be had: do lesser albums weigh down the better aspects of a discography?

Because Finding Forever kicked off cliche Common (or brought it to the forefront, let's be real --- it was always there, at least a bit), and it really dragged down FF, D/B, Let Love, and A Beautiful Revolution. These were ok albums (at best) with one or two great tracks and at least a few real cringe moments.

(I *think* D/B is the best of that bunch, though.)

I'm not convinced UMC is as bad as everyone thought it was but it's still pretty rough.

I need to revisit AG -- I didn't like it much at first (felt very on the nose) but that might have changed. Also, my anti-Glasper-ness means I sometimes have to work extra hard to not let that bias crowd out the music, lol.

I still don't understand why folks hate on Nobody's Smiling, it's probably the most interesting post-Be album until Black America Again (imo). Not everything works but it was the beginning of Com sounding invigorated again, after a pretty sleepy run. I actually think it's a pretty good record.

Personally, I don't think bad or just-ok records are strikes against an overall discography - art is not a sport - but I do think they should be part of the conversation when considering someone's overall arc and contributions. And I have to admit that I'm really fond of artists whose less frequent but always stellar output allows their stars to really shine.

I’m just betting the house. We all know what a full album of PR beats sounds like so I’m willing to assume this album will be full of songs as good or better than everything we’ve heard so far.

I think this depends on how many quality albums you have. 7 great albums pretty much offsets the lows of your discography.

I agree and it’s been pretty strange to see some of these podcasts giving so much love to FF. I think that album is half good, half bad but I guess because it has Ye attached to it and is the follow-up/brother album to Be, people act like it’s some type of classic. I see most people listing it in his top 5 and it would be lucky to make his top 10 imo.

Nobody’s Smiling is an example of an album killed by a few bad tracks. It doesn’t leave much room for error and it doesn’t have super highs so when those low moments come, it really changes the outlook.

Again, I think it’s more about the ratio. Common has done more than enough to offset those mediocre and bad albums in his discography.

Cliche or Formulaic Common is definitely a thing, and I'd agree that it really started to come to the forefront with FF. But I wouldn't put Dreamer/Believer in that category. He was really invigorated on that album, even if some of the songs didn't hit. It's imperfect but it's really fucking good.

>I'm not convinced UMC is as bad as everyone thought it was but
>it's still pretty rough.

You're ..... wrong. LOL. That album is horrid. There's a couple of moments (Inhale is dope) but otherwise, that album is easily the least himself and most cringe he's ever been.

Agree re: AG being on the nose, I lump that album in with Let Love, and the Beautiful Revolution albums. They are mostly one note sonically IMO, and 30+ years in, Comm doesn't have enough interesting shit to say to carry an album on his own with flat/listless production.

Why the hate for Glasper ?

I don't think people hate on it, I think people forget about it lol. Even I have trouble remembering it happened. But I'm with you, I think that album is better than it's given credit for. That said, it's inconsistent and I don't think there are any standout moments, maybe that's why it gets glossed over.

Revisited both Dreamer and UMC last week.

Re: Dreamer, it's definitely better than I remember but it also feels... I don't know, lyrically predictable. But I'll spend more time with it because I was surprised at how little I remembered it.

>>I'm not convinced UMC is as bad as everyone thought it was

I'll take an L here, UMC was way worse than I remembered. I think one track *might* be salvageable (Gladiator) and a few of the tracks toward the end. But nothing worth spending time on.

Here's why I want to say it's better than it is: I appreciate the effort to switch things up significantly and try something new, and especially to do so with a clear nod to a simpler style and *fun* feel of the past. But it just didn't work, felt super forced. I knew it was his worst album, easily. But forgot how it earned that, lol.

>Why the hate for Glasper ?

It's a combination of finding a lot of his shit boring and being turned off by his personality/understanding of his place musically. He and a number of others in his circle frequently present themselves as rebels in the jazz world, or talk about how jazz is stuck in the past, or air this or that complaint against the "jazz police." Some of which is fine and justified but a lot of it is blowing smoke, especially when your answer is to make stuff that is basically just neo-soul 2.0?

Like, he presents himself as an innovator and then makes that absolutely terrible Miles tribute album, lol.

He also just grates on me.

That said, BR 3 was actually really good overall, and he's had some contributions to things recently that have softened my hate a bit, lol.

yeah it has a few bad tracks but pretty much every single Common album does. Everyone should revisit it (deluxe version)

Same with Let Love though. Ya'll should revisit that- I did recently and was pleasantly surprised.

I think he really dug deep on that joint and even tho the production is a little sleepy (albeit, good at the same time, if that makes sense), I think that tone was intentional to let Common's biographical stories breathe and take center stage.

It's a solid album, and definitely fitting for Common.

That’s his only album where he tried to make the same album twice. FF had some real highs, and isn’t bad, but could have been better with more originality behind it.

I'd also argue that Let Love and the Beautiful Revolution albums are all sort of one note sonically (said that in another response here).

But still, I think the overall point stands. He's been in the game 30+ years with only a couple of formulaic/copycat albums. That's pretty strong.

There are moments between Resurrection and Dreamer / Believer but in terms of whole LPs... D/B finds Com sounding his most playful since Res.

The production is solid from NoID and Com sounds inspired which he always does when finding new producer to rock with after a run of albums with previous producer(s).
IE - Dilla & Soulquarians after NoID, Twilite Tone
Ye after Dilla & Soulquarians
NoID again Ye (skipping that dreadful Neptunes dance album)
Now Pete Rock after rocking with Riggins and Glasper.

His best albums in the latter part of his career (post Be, I suppose) have all been products of exactly what you're talking about.

Like you said, Be w/Kanye after working w/Soulquarians for 2 albums.
Dreamer/Believer with No ID after working with Kanye for 2 albums.
Black America Again with Riggins after working w/No ID for 2 albums.
Now this album w/Pete after Riggins/Glasper for a few albums.

Put out the album without it. Then after like two weeks, reissue it with Trying and another bonus track. Then after two weeks, release it with 2 more bonus tracks.

Before you know it, you have a 30 album triple disc full of bonus material.

I accidentally watched the video on YouTube with the speed set at 1.25 (after watching another video before it). I actually really liked it at 1.25. It gave it a late 80's tempo and energy. Unfortunately that is the first way that I heard it and it cemented in.

for the project. Like a single, the Album announcement 2-3 months later or something. They are keeping the momentum up as they know attention spans are short these days, even for the old heads. Lot of promotion (and Com freestyles, haha) and you are seeing mentions of it all over. Juan Ep is doing a sit down with them at SOBs next week and Rosenberg said something interesting about the release on a recent pod. Basically he said he hasn’t seen this much push from various directions for a hip hop project awhile. Said that Com and co have agents and affiliates all over trying to push the album. Cool to see for 2 legends.

Com has always been corny and that has always been part of his persona.

Came in with low hopes but this is good stuff.

My hot spicy take is every Com Pete Rock beat is better than every Nas hit boy beat.

That persistent fill throws me off in a way makes it hard to get into it

My brain just wants a simpler kick/snare loop here. I’d love the song otherwise but it does throw me off in a way that I actually feel physically.

This Man though?
Lonesome?
When The Sun Shines Again?
Now And Then?

Man

There are a couple joints that just ain’t for me but nothing is wack and most of it is a straight up homerun for me.

I'm kidding but what I'm getting @ is that his 2nd verse is always the most fire. His first verses on tracks are oftentimes a little clunky, like he's trying to find the rhythm (although those verses are still usually dope, too, to be clear). Then he catches fire on his 2nd verses and most of the time, 3rd verses.

Anyway this album is awesome. Gonna need to sit with it for a while but man is this is refreshing coming from these two.

Btw no one mentioned Everything's Grand yet, which is a travesty. That may be a dark horse favorite for me. I've enjoyed many of Common & PJ's collaborations.

All Kind of Ideas still reigns I think, but there's a lot to love here.

Like some have already said about some of the already-released singles, this stuff sounds like a throwback but fresh at the same time.

The features are great, too. The aforementioned PJ, obviously Bilal, and I always love a fire Posdnuos verse. Comm and De La have always always always sounded dope together.

I think his recent stuff is unfairly slept on. I really do.

Black America Again was/is cool and probably the best of the bunch. Nobodys Smiling and Let Love deserve more...well love.

August Greene was cool.

But I don't think I've been THIS hyped of a first listen since Be.

Hyped, impressed, grateful, and happy for Com. Great reminder why he is top 5 for me.

I put it on par with BAA in terms of how I felt after first listen, but other than that, yea, I haven't been this moved by a Common album since Be, either.

And I agree with your assessments of all his albums of the past decade or so, as well. In fact I slept on a lot of that stuff myself. But it's def better than I/we gave it credit for originally.

But yea - this one stands out above all of that, for sure. Really damn good music.

to rank his best projects.

I forget his exact top 3 or 4 or whatever it was (I know Be, LWFC, and Resurrection were mentioned), but then he said something like "but honestly this new one with Pete is up there"

and I thought "sure Com, you have to say that" haha

Good for him.

A personal top 5 favorite MC with a personal top 5 producer of all time.

We all know so many super-collabos that never come to pass or end up as maybe a few songs here and there so the fact we have this album and it's a QUALITY release is a really nice feeling. Love the album and happy for the two of them.

glad this came at all and at this level of music. both artists are in their respective bags.

several standouts, but A GOD is gold. com shines over mello beats like that. jennifer's singing is so good.

so one else mentioned Everything's So Grand. that's a banger too with PJ's vocals.

I'm sure it's an easy one based on the vocal sample but I can't find it on quick search. In any event I'm pretty sure whatever song it is, was previously sampled for another song I love, I recognize it so much, I just can't pinpoint it.

PR is a legend and has had some light brushes with mainstream-ish attention, but not to this extent (e.g. Fallon, CBS, Associated Press, most of the usual hip-hop pods/YouTube channels). I love how Common, being the more known of the duo, has let Pete take the main seat on these shows, get his shine.

I feel like the production is as good as it gets. All great beats.

Common is really good and at times some tracks remind me of Be era Common. Won't say he sounds as good as his best work but he is really close. There are still some verses that aren't great, or he doesn't sound great on but as a whole he's really good.

For me it's easily his best work since Be.

I'm really glad that they made this. Gonna be dope finally seeing Common on the 20th

at SOBs earlier this week. Mark Ronson DJ'ed the event.
You can listen to it in podcast form on Juan Ep.
They may have video of the event on Youtube, I haven't checked.
I listened to the pod though, good interview.
There's some nerdy production talk... Ciph is some sort of wizard at being able to recognize song BPMs. They talk history of select records, Pete rhyming, what movie Com gets recognized for the most, filtered basslines, remix records, and a bunch of other stuff.

Com has now done full albums with:

NoID (in 2 different eras)
Dilla & Soulquarians
Ye
Neptunes
Karriem Riggins
Pete Rock

That is insane. Who else can say they've done something like that?

Fully fleshed out songs with strong lyrics from a clearly inspired Common, rich beats with so many layers to them, the trademark Pete Rock interlude beats at the ends of a lot of songs. And who mastered this? Because it just sounds alive! Can’t wait until my vinyl comes in.

Great album.

have been the trademark instrumental segments Pete Rock drops at the trail end of songs; the one at the end of Lonesome sounds a bit better than All Kinds of Ideas to me despite the fact is sounds as if All Kinds if Ideas was the finished beat fashioned from the samples from the snippet.

In response to Reply # 0

I'm just gonna list 'em out in bulletpoint format rather than trying to pretend I'm able to tie any of these things together yet into one cogent thought haha. I am just so happy this album exists. Haven't been this over the mood excited about an album since probably PRhyme 1 (so it's been a literal decade). I was telling my friend Friday nite that after I put my daughter to bed, I sat on my porch just taking this album in for hours. And it felt nostalgic as hell, as if I was sitting at my high school locker taking in Like Water for Chocolate for the first time (which is exactly what happened). So surreal.

Anyway:

- I'll get my only negative out of the way right off the bat, and that's that I'm already skipping A GOD (There Is) when I listen to this. I hate that I do but that song really does nothing for me on any level. It's exactly the type of over the top song I was hoping *not* to hear this time around, but in the latter half of his career unfortunately Comm is always good for at least one of these. Some of them are better than others, but this one just bores me to tears and as soon as it comes on I'm ready for something else. Alright on to the overwhelming good that is the rest of the album.

- I mentioned in a prior post that Common oftentimes seemingly "warms up" during his first verse, then catches fire on his 2nd verse. Third verses for him are often just a few bars, finishing his thoughts. It's an interesting trend I've noticed with him. And to be clear, none of the bars in his first verses are wack by any means, it just often seems like his flow hasn't caught on to the beat yet lol. Anyway some examples:
- 2nd verse on Lonesome (DAYUM)
- 2nd verse on Everything's So Grand
- ESPECIALLY the 2nd verse on Now and Then (that beat is pure filth. So fucking good.)

- As a father of a 2 year old daughter I took particular notice of Common's verses about his relationship with his daughter on Fortunate and Lonesome. Maybe I haven't paid close enough attention to the lyrical content of his last couple of albums, because I often wondered what their relationship was like, cuz to my mind he didn't really make her a focal point of his lyrics after I think Be. So I was glad to hear those verses and thought they were both really touching tributes.

- Related to that point, this is just a really mature album IMO, like someone else already mentioned. Grown man hip hop. Elevation being the main takeaway. Comm has always been high minded in that way, but this album really takes it to another level.

- Part of the reason for that is because of the gorgeous, layered, fully realized production. These beats are unbelievable. A few of them required a couple of listens for me to catch on to them, but my god. The baselines on all of these songs are next level. So Many People comes to mind with regard to those last two points. On first listen I thought, this song is weird. But that's about the most hypnotizing song on the album for me now. I just zone out everytime it's on.

- "It's the big payback ! For the dollar that I borrowed."

- Pete's adlibs on Fortunate

- "Learned to love the mic, so I, pursued it Jordan-ly"

- So much of this lyricism and wordplay is quintessential Common, and the reason why I fell in love with him as an artist/lyricist in the first place. He's really dropping a ton of gems here that are rewarding and will continue to reward repeated listens. Same w/the beats.

- As I mentioned in another post above, the classic Pete Rock interlude instrumentals into subsequent tracks really bring this album together. He doesn't overdo it, by doing say an interlude in between every song. He just sprinkled them in where necessary for the transition. The best one is between Lonesome and All Kind of Ideas (my current two favorite songs, as it turns out). That transition is perfect and really takes two songs that you otherwise prolly wouldn't sequence together, and makes them fit like a glove. These guys are pros pros.

- I think they've both hammered home that they were creating this album with an eye toward the 90s, but with a refreshing take on it. That's the perfect way to describe this joint. The beats are hard hitting, but updated in such a mature and thoughtful way. The beats and songs have a spiritual vibe to them without being overdone or preachy. They're hypnotic in many ways. There's so many layers, so many different aspects to explore.

I can't wait for my vinyl to arrive. I'm gonna be sitting with this one for a long time. So happy this album exists and that there's more to come, and I'm so happy for two of my all time favorite artists that they're having this moment. I watched their full performance from Fallon at some point this weekend, and Comm's energy and stage presence is just so dope to witness. Clearly they're having such a blast with this, and deservedly so.

Specifically that he's uplifting and spiritual, but doesn't come off preachy:

"The Auditorium Vol. 1 fits that brief well, though its midlife crises are tempered by a profound optimism that is very much Common’s brand. On opener Dreamin’, he’s mourning the departed – best friend J Dilla, still keenly missed two decades on, along with more recent losses like Trugoy of De La Soul – but also drawing inspiration from heroes like Martin Luther King Jr and Nelson Mandela, declaring, “When I touch dreams/They become things”. Spirituality is a recurrent theme, though he’s never preachy;"

Can't let this opportunity pass. And I'm trying to do this with a lot of artists (I'm dying to see The Roots in Boston but it's the Sunday of Labor Day Weekend so it's unlikely) cuz in my mind I'm thinking, how many more chances are we gonna have to see our favorites live ? So I want to try and maximize, so I'll just figure out how to make a Wednesday work in this case haha. And honestly, weekdays are often easier to make work than weekends cuz weekends are so packed now, months ahead of time.

Anyway let me know if you end up pulling the trigger !

And tickets to that cost fucking bank. Even with the line-up, I don't know if I want to see them in an outdoor festival setting, outside, during the dog days of August.

It looks like there's a few days between that show and the Tuscon stop. Hopefully they schedule a show in Oakland or San Francisco during that period.

Common and Pete Rock had a FREE Summerstage show this past Sunday in Brooklyn.

I only found about about 30-45 minutes before the show was scheduled to end on Sunday and didn't go myself, so there's only so much snark I can throw at you.

Pretty remarkable for both performers to agree to do a free show right around the time they're about to drop new material.

So sad. "We Don't Care" came on shuffle the other day and I was bemoaning the same thing. Sounds like a completely different human on so many levels. That was the first time I'd let a Kanye song play thru in like 5+ years.

$60/ea for standing room floor "seats" right @ the stage (which is just the way the venue is set up, no seats on the floor). Not bad at all IMO.

Mostly because Pete outshined him, but just because Pete was stellar, doesn't mean Com didn't come hard.

This is one of the best albums in years IMO and I am not one of those "hip hop hasn't been good since I was young" nutjobs(no offense to those guys).

love that he took over for Pops
im not crying - you're crying!

i was also just listening to bilal's live joint with quest and glasper, then switched over to this - i love that dude for being the most artsy fartsy far out fucker, and then just smashing a hook on a classic hip hop track - idk i feel like most folks that have gone so far into jazz stylings as him would feel "above it" or something.

^^^ I loved how he didn't overdo it/beat us over the head with it, too. Just a quick, subtle tribute (a true IYKYK moment from Common) to the man who blessed so many of his projects for years. Cuz he knows no one can do it like Pops did it.

Totally. And Bilal and Common have the best rapport. Love how Comm always gets him involved. Bilal is underrated AF.

Pete kinda outdid Common on this project. Com sounding like he rapping to an audience of second graders. Hearing 'imagine a world' or 'dreams/dreaming' gets kinda tired.
But he is in his 50's so I guess he gets a pass. Would love to hear him go hard on an up tempo track just once.

subject matter…. he needs be more conceptual and get more creative… otherwise the I have a dream raps become tired…

I definitely understand the criticism about the lofty "dreams" or "imagine a world" stuff, he falls back on that a little bit too often, but I don't think that's indicative of a lack of subject matter in the big picture at all. I think he goes a lot of different places on this album.
