"Hip Hop What If Scenario : Too $hort never moved to Atlanta. What would..."
Tue Jan-24-23 09:04 AM by normal35762

I heard Bomani Jones mention it a while back on his side show. Thought it was an interesting question. Would have liked to have heard some discussion on that. What you think woulda happened? How would the hip hop game be different if $hort stayed in The Bay his whole career. How would things be different?

Eric Sermon found out about how Parrish was handling their financials. Parrish Smith's home gets shot up. Then Eric flees to Atlanta. He ends up making a nice living producing for different artists and bringing major credibility to the Atlanta hip-hop scene. This is what influenced his friend Too Short to make the move. I believe Too Short was getting into issues locally as well, but I don't remember his timeline as well as Eric Sermon's.

Which Atlanta artists/groups did he produce for or put on? He set up shop in Atlanta and pretty much did what he been doing. He did some stuff for a few groups signed to Dallas Austin's Rowdy Records but none of that made major noise.

ground out there for hip-hop. No shortage of transplants in Atlanta now but be honest was it anything like this back then? When you get people like Short and Sermon out there it does make the local scene stronger overall. More localized hip-hop business, now everyone doesn't have to go to NYC and LA to put on.

Illegal didn't make major noise? What was moving hip-hop wise in Atlanta that was hotter than them? Parental Advisory had no traction on a national level, that leaves who? Outkast doesn't drop "Players Ball" until several months after Illegal's album dropped. Maybe Hiero should have relocated to Atlanta too should have come to Atlanta too...

Why are we skipping Kris Kross and Arrested Development? They had success in 92. Not hip hop enough?

My first encounter with Short in 1996 at Clark Atlanta. I swear I met more artists going in and out of girls' dorms back then. Trick Daddy was messing with a girl who lived in the room next to my then girlfriend, now wife. We'd sometimes bump into each other on a nightly basis and would crack up. Good times lol

….did anyone else hear a rumor about Pac considering aligning with Dungeon Family instead of Death Row or did I hallucinate that?

Because talk about changing history if that was true and he went that route…

Before anyone could act, Suge swooped in. Would’ve been weird but the beef either dies out or gets squashed fairly. Puff & Rico Wade always had a quiet beef but I don’t know if Pac knew that and would’ve been beefing with Bad Boy anyway.

That’s fascinating since I consider Pac and Goodie the pinnacle when it comes to emoting as emcees. That would have been a powerful combo.

I would have loved to hear what this combo would have sounded like. "Sould Food" & "Makaveli" are 2 of my favorite albums of all time. And I think they could have married the styles effectively.

This would be a dope hip-hop "What If?"

Didn't he link up with Lil' Jon for that one?
But in all honesty I thought he mainly left Oakland because there were some street wars happening that he didn't want to get caught up in. If he stayed, he might've lost his life.
I'm glad he bounced. Plus moving down South helped widen his sound and brand.
