"Name an Artist who sabotaged their own career?"
Thu Jan-12-23 10:25 AM by Buddy_Gilapagos

This isn't about artist who couldn't adapt to changing music trends (not about Prince). And I really don't want it be about artist whose personal life choices (i.e., drugs) cut their lives short or got them locked up. We'd be here all day.

And I don't think this is a Kanye post, music-wise we don't really know if he is done (he also probably had his best work behind him).

I am talking about artist who just kept getting in their own way (whatever that means to you) if that makes sense?

Anyway, I keep reading about how Grand Puba couldn't get it together which is sad because at one point that dude was poised to be the man.

I also read recently about Dev Hines (Blood Orange) picking a fight with Solange online. I can't think that helped his career which I thought was going to take off.

Anyone comes to mind?

He should definitely top this list.

Said that J.Dilla executive produced his album.

I believe that he later started recording and performing under the alias George Santos.

Definitely didn't mean to victim blame, but I think most people suffering from mental illness would agree there is a degree of responsibility to take your meds, seek cognitive behavioral therapy, or whatever else you need to function in society.

There are lots of people who suffer from bipolar disorder who do just that. Its unfortunate but hopefully a healthier future is in his cards.

I thought of it because when Cupid Deluxe dropped I really thought dude was going to be big. Then he kinda of fizzled. I wondered why but seeing him fight with Solange like that in such a fashion kinda gave me the impression he was a difficult dude to work with. Especially when he made amneds after her stock rose and his fell. I could have that whole thing wrong, just what it looks like from the outside.

I'm no expert but I feel like this is a bit off. I think he's sort of intentionally played things a bit low key, done some more avant/instrumental-ish projects in the art world, and found more footing in the indie-ish world than elsewhere --- but he's never lost cred or dropped a career-wrecking project.

I still feel Kendrick has the career Jay Elec was going to have.

He's undiagnosed, but I wonder if something underneath the surface kept him from having the kind of impact the talent shown on his mixtapes suggested.

Jay may not have made as many official releases as you may have liked for him to have, but he has still dropped several songs over that time period and he still has had an impact.

Yes, he had a good run for a while, so it can't be said his career didn't bloom at all.

But, he stopped making music altogether for a while when he still had a fanbase that would have loved to support his music. However, I don't know anything about his personal life, so maybe distancing himself from music was a worthwhile choice.

In response to Reply # 0

Lauryn Hill had the right idea - go “serious” - but she didn’t have the actual singer songwriter chops she was teasing and obviously didn’t have any good people in her ear either

Unplugged blows and I think when people got past it and realized it for what it was, basically a stunt, Lauryn didn’t have a follow up. She didn’t wanna master guitar and maybe the ego was too great to open up the net of collaborators.

But I don't think it made much of a blip. And didn't derail his career. So he's low on the list if he's on it at all. He's been around for the better part of 2 decades now and has made some of the best music over that time period. And if whatever he was going thru derailed him at all, it clearly wasn't much and not for long. I barely even remembered it til you brought him up.

D'angelo voluntarily withdrew from the limelight. I don't think they had bad careers, they just really didn't want it the way acts like, heck, Common or the Roots did.

I get it. SOme folks just want a little shine and piece of mind.

Canibus...that said, he still crushed dude LYRICALLY, but is pretty much done professionally, yet LL is still licking his lips and cashing large checks...

Granted, Wyclef did him absolutely zero favors but man had all the momentum in the world and fucked his into oblivion with a series of increasingly bizarre and boneheaded moves.

Damn shame too because he was so unbelievably talented. I still listen to his early freestyles and maintain that the Rip the Jacker album is phenomenal.

Like maybe he wasn't ever supposed to be on tracks with LL, Wyclef and R Kelly.

He's a backpack rapper who was more at home doing miracle lyrical type flows. And by the way, this joint right here is my shit.
