Tower Records, 4th & Broadway - Me along with ODB's brother Ramsey Jones - yep, that WAS the time and place to work.

The Veldt - Love at first hate

(My Black Rock card should have been ALL THE WAY PULLED if I didn't remember "Love at first hate" quick enough to get it in before the editing time expired - yep)

>May be my most listened to that year.

Same here. I wore that shit out that entire summer and beyond. But pretty much all I listened to that summer. It's a no-skipper for sure. Xzibit was so good in his prime. Just such a unique sound, and such a hype (but not *annoyingly* hype) MC. He's a joy when he comes on a song.

Most recent example I can think of/that I know of was his appearance on Dre's "Compton". "Spent my birthday in Dubai, Skyrise surprise and I'm dressed like a spy" haha I fucking love that dude. He's a great interview too, apropos of nothing.

Joint came out August 25… how you rock it all summer? Lol. I feel you though. As soon as it dropped I was rocking that shit all the way to the end of the year. I’d say that, Aquemini, Soul Survivor, Moment of Truth and First Fam 4 Life were my Top 5 that year.

Agreed, even the songs I don’t love I don’t skip because they have a fun quality to them like P Pop and Shroomz. He has one of the best voices to me and his presence on the mic is very underrated.

Maybe it just felt like the whole summer cuz I spent a lot of time listening to it at my family's lake house after I bought it, and I'm usually there most frequently during summers, dating back to my childhood. So I guess I just mean I listened to it non-stop out at the lake up through whenever the weather turned, whether that be late September or whenever it was. I listened to basically nothing but that album while out there on the boat and shit. That's my memory of after I first bought it.

Exactly right. Same exact thoughts here re: the songs that aren't my *favorites* but also fall into what you said and what I said before about X just being such a joy that I can tolerate even just his goofy songs, like those you named.

That Swizz Casio production was and is nails on a chalk board to me.

I can’t believe people think that album is a classic.

he’s hard to listen to for a full album, IMO. So are those “type” of beats.

The Intro is one of the better album intros.

I liked him and this album made a huge impact. It’s not an album I’m ever going to sit down and listen to from front to back, probably ever again though.

The impact is also interesting. People say it’s this huge impactful album and changed the course of hip-hop, but did it? In 99 we see Ja Rule, who is essential at that point seen as DMX-lite come out with VVV to not as much success and then completely changed his style to go more commercial. Hip-Hop as a whole imo proceeded to get more commercial as well after 98. So I don’t see a whole lot of impact as far as the entire landscape.

Some people say he was better than 2pac. Makes no sense to me. Respect to DMX but he was not even in the same universe as 2pac.
