"Freddie Gibbs - $oul $old $eparately"
Sat Oct-01-22 07:05 PM by LeroyBumpkin

01 Couldn't Be Done – Featuring Kelly Price (I'm assuming it's her, can't confirm)
02 Blackest In The Room
03 Pain & Strife Featuring – Offset
04 Zipper Bagz
05 Too Much Featuring – MoneyBagg Yo
06 Lobster Omelette Featuring – Rick Ross
07 Space Rabbit
08 Feel No Pain Featuring – Anderson .Paak, Raekwon
09 Rabbit Vision
10 PYS Featuring – DJ Paul
11 Dark Hearted
12 Gold Rings Featuring – Pusha T
13 Grandma's Stove Featuring – Musiq Soulchild
14 CIA
15 Decode (Bonus Track) Featuring – Scarface

THIS. JOINT. GOES.

Ran through this twice real good as Hurricane Ian cancelled my flight this weekend.
Love the Phonte/LB shoutout opening the album.
The Paak/Raekwon joint is probably my favorite. Beat goes.
In fact, the 2nd half of the album really goes, and is definitely the highlight.
I'll have more to say after some more listens. Been running all my Gibbs stuff lately to just compare,
but this is up there, and that says a lot given his output.

This is top tier Gibbs. I think it even shows more range than typical for him. He has a few joints about the down sides of his success and the perceptions of making it vs. the reality.

That does kind of seem a theme for the year though, or at least a few recent albums. Is it me, or is there a theme that being a successful rapper is just not very fulfilling even if you do have money, fame and hoes?

I personally have never wanted hoes or fame, but I've heard a bunch of music this year from artists like Gibbs, Kendrick, Cordae, Saba etc that make it seem like they don't get much satisfaction from the artistic success that they have achieved. Or maybe it's just that the negatives weigh on them still.

...Anyway, this album is super dope. I did remove a few songs though as I always do with his multi producer albums since ESGN.

Yes, I've noticed that too; however, with Kendrick, that's been an ongoing theme for him since TPAB through DAMN through the latest one.. the idea of the rise and fall of a rap star (i.e., 2Pac) and everything that entails.

Quelle Chris "Deathfame" is another good example of a hip hop album examining the phenomenon of celebrity and success.

good for gibbs. he has a top 10 hit in him too, just wait until he's getting on tracks from Hit-Boy or Boi-1da or that lane. 10 year career to be an overnight success.

pretty much since You Only Live 2wice
this record is super solid

if i was gonna critique it, he kinda fucks it up with the features from lesser know (to me anyway) cats
-
Pain & Strife f/ offset, i dont fuck with - its too Bone Thugzy. Gibbs dipped into that style at least once before, cant remember what track. Didnt like that one either

PYS f. DJ paul is another one that i just dont fuck with

other than those 2, every track slaps hard, but the moneybagg yo feature on Too Much drags down an otherwise really dope cut

-
theme - the voice messages are pretty cool, but i dont like the concierge lady - but its pretty unobtrusive as reoccuring interludes go

cuts - he left some BANGERS off this album - Big Boss Rabbit, Black Illuminati, Gang Signs, Ice Cream - they all came out in the run-up, and all have similar cover art, so i assumed they were singles from this record. No matter, i just added them to the record in my itunes, but in particular Big Boss Rabbit and Black Illuminati have some of his best bars in recent history.

Dark Hearted is easily my favorite song on the record (at this point anyway) - gibbs can do it all, coke rap, brag rap, pimp rap, whatever, but hes at his best (like most artists) when hes being raw and honest (thats whats so good about YOL2) - and this track fits that mold.

the beat change on Blackest in the Room is sick.

the Paak feature was dope, but its prob gonna be impossible for them to top Giannis

another great addition to the catalogue. i echo what most everyone else has said in here. FREDDIE KANE.

(did anyone watch his movie BTW? i had high hopes because his music videos are always great and hes got a real natural vibe....but it was awful unfort)

I appreciate on some level how diverse the tracks are here to an extent, but there are some tracks I like a lot more than others to be honest.

This is a bit of a step down from the prior albums, but I suppose on some level it isn't fair to compare this album to those because of how great Madlib and Alchemist are and the fact this album has a smattering of producers.

That said, I did remove a few songs. I remove songs from just about all of Gibbs multi producer albums because those are the joints with his super trappy songs. It's not even that the beats are bad the whole type of song is just not my vibe sometimes. I can tell that's just who he is as an artist though so I'm glad he gets to explore that on some of his albums.

I always wonder what the collaborative vibe is between these artists as opposed to when they work on their own. like, why certain artists make music I do not like, but when they collaborate with an artist I like it ends up so dope. I think of 2chains that way. Every time he's on a song with an artist I like it's sooooo dope, but I cannot get into any of his music at all.

As far as the rapping itself, to me he’s always been solid but not great. But I would agree that no other rapper has consistently dropped dope projects like him.

"Ice Cream" with Rick Ross, and Big Boss Rabbit all should have been included on the official tracklist...add those to your personal SSS playlist.

(side note he also did a song with Mozzy and G Perico called "Colors" that is one of my favorite rap songs...ever ever)

but yea like someone else said, easily the best rapper alive since 2009 (along with Roc Marci and Pusha T)
